Apparently they can, quickly make you a Lord and then give you any job they want, what on Earth?!

DC will probably be in Tel Aviv by this evening!

That's all we need, Cameron in Israel.

BIossomtoes · 13/11/2023 09:07

We’ll never be able to accuse Sunak of being indecisive again after this!

IClaudine · 13/11/2023 09:07

Great news about SB. Now watch the Tory party fall apart some more. Is Sunak really going to offer DC a job?

AdamRyan · 13/11/2023 09:08

They just said on BBC1 it only takes a signature by the King.

Our democracy is fucked. That would be fine, if the king actually had any political independence. But he's just a puppet in that regard so might as well just let the PM make Lords whenever they want

Zonder · 13/11/2023 09:09

Totally agree @AdamRyan

I think it's mad. But very interesting! At a very late stage the moderate Conservatives are being brought back in? Well good but a bit late

That seems to be exactly what happens.

Stroopwaffels · 13/11/2023 09:10

Plus, if as everyone thinks, the COnservatives will lose the next election, Cameron knows it's 9 months / year of work and commitment and no more. There have been Lords/Ladies in the cabinet before, Baroness Warsi springs to mind.

Zonder · 13/11/2023 09:10

Ah apparently this is so that Sunak can present himself as the PM of change after the conference. Backward change.

TokyoSushi · 13/11/2023 09:10

Also shows that even Sunak knows that his 'colleagues' are so shit that nobody can do the job...

Zonder · 13/11/2023 09:11

I'm bloody furious that Cameron now gets a seat in HoL for life, for 9 months (if he lasts that long) as FS.

BIossomtoes · 13/11/2023 09:12

Lord Cameron? Couldn’t care less, I just want to see the back of them.

Stroopwaffels · 13/11/2023 09:12

To be fair, @Zonder , it's not unusual for a former PM to get a seat in the Lords. Better someone with lots of political experience than some 20 something advisor to Boris, or a hereditary landowner.

AdamRyan · 13/11/2023 09:14

I will give it to Sunak, its a decisive way to deal with the "spineless" accusation. He's basically said none of his current MPs are up to the job.

I'm probably going to get crucified but I actually liked DC. Brexit was mad but he always seemed like he wanted to make the UK better so I was OK with him (although not austerity).

However when does it stop being a premiership and start being a dictatorship, if you can just appoint whoever you like into your government? Terrifying.

bombastix · 13/11/2023 09:14

I know this thread says countdown but meltdown seems apt

AdamRyan · 13/11/2023 09:16

Also I wonder if Sunak wants DCs experience of winning elections in the room ahead of a GE in May?

Stroopwaffels · 13/11/2023 09:16

I liked Cameron too, and thought Theresa May did the best she could in a shitty situation. I am a floating voter, have voted for all the main parties in the past (but not SNP, never SNP) and think Cameron's experience is a great move by Sunak.

crumblingschools · 13/11/2023 09:17

I’m surprised Cameron isn’t already in HoL, don’t most ex PMs get a peerage

He only won one. With a majority of 12.

You can thank Boris "bloody Cameron got a first and I didn't" Johnson for this strange, resentful omission

AdamRyan · 13/11/2023 09:21

Wonder what Starmer is thinking. He must be 🍿

Merrymouse · 13/11/2023 09:21

And he won it by promising a referendum to appease/get rid of the swivel eyed loons… who haven’t gone anywhere.

DuncinToffee · 13/11/2023 09:22

Lord Cameron of Greensil,
got a ring to it

This seems to be her latest idea

https://x.com/PolitlcsUK/status/1723402139676885153?s=20

Suella Braverman has told Rishi Sunak that the only way to save the Tories is to call a snap election on small boats

Ah, so that's how she's hoping to rally support from the back benches. I hope they have the sense to tell her to stop being so stupid.

Well yes, exactly.
