What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

My concern is what's going to happen to women's health when Botox and fillers break down in their bodies?

Silicon implants were deemed absolutely safe... until they weren't. So many women had horrific problems from silicon implants.

Continual use of Botox and fillers cannot be good for anyone's body. I fear that in another decade we'll have women with lots of problems caused by continually injecting their bodies with substances that cause harm.

MsCactus · 06/11/2023 13:41

I don't understand this either.

And I'm saying this as someone with tiny, tiny lips. I've been complimented on my tiny bow lips loads. I think they make my face look doll-like.

i would look so bizarre with huge lips. I know some people's face can pull them off, but if you have small delicate features they look so bad imo.

Same I spend a fortune going to an actual doctor. My aim is for it to absolutely not look like filler. People don't like to believe it on here though as it's much more fun to belive it's all duck lips!

Actually also wanted to say although I hate that look. I'm not fond of bashing other women. Let them be.

I hate so many modern beauty trends.

Out for dinner the other night, 2 young women came in and sat at a nearby table. They both had hair extensions, orange faces, HD brows, massive fake eyelashes and lip filler. Plus really long fake nails. The result was grotesque.

I do find this whole subject fascinating and it goes so deep doesn't it.

On the one hand there is beauty standards, but then there's also "trends" born out of cultural identity and status symbolism, which goes beyond beauty or at least conventional attractiveness, and can be seen all over the world.

Even these days, "natural" beauty has been commodified (the clean girl look, very expensive skincare and grooming routines) and there are so many conversations to be had around appropriation, classism, and all sorts.

Love my lips….

I’m also botoxed to the point of no frowning and have my eyelashes curled and dyed.

BTW I also have no breasts or nipples due to breast cancer.

It’s my body and I probably only have a few years before the next cancer hits, I’ll do what I want with it.

If you don’t like it, don’t have it done.

Yours look amazing!

I'll be the first to say over-botoxed lips look terrible but am bemused by people who say they've never seen any that don't look fake. How could you possibly know? 🤔

Ankerdam · 06/11/2023 13:43

The vast majority don't make one look better than they did naturally, but very occasionally it does enhance features. DP's ex looked, in fairness, lovely after she very first got them done and then she went too far and they look just as obvious and unattractive as most now.

Chanelbasketballandchain · 06/11/2023 13:43

I think the more subtle ones look ok. I am glad we live in a country where we can tweak our appearance a little bit. How many women don't even remember their natural hair colour? It's one of these things.
Someone like Anna Faris looks cute.

The exaggerated ones, TOWIE style, I do think they look hideous. They also look very painful.

PragmaticWench · 06/11/2023 13:44

Watching MAFSUK and realised all those with lip filler spend ages sticking their tongue out. Not in a slight way but I think they're trying to put their tongue between the top lip and their teeth, and the underneath of the tongue pushes out of their mouth. It's SO foul, really grim.

CorneliaStreet · 06/11/2023 13:45

I watched a video by Stephanie Lange on YouTube about fillers. Fillers supposedly dissolve over time but she talked about a woman who had had fillers for years and had stopped four years ago, but when she had an MRI there was still loads of filler left under her skin. If that’s true, it’s pretty scary given that the long term effects of fillers/Botox aren’t known.

A fad for injecting stuff into your face or having surgery like buccal fat removal is very different to fashions in clothes and make up, which are instantly removable.

SurprisedWithAHorse · 06/11/2023 13:45

They can do a very good job for women with particularly thin lips - either naturally, from age or from ill-health - not to look enormous, or even fuller than average, but just to be a bit more visible so they don't seem to disappear. As ever, you don't notice the good work. That's what makes it good work.

You can also get the overdone look which I don't care for either, but at least it's temporary...and I think the women who do that will mostly grow out of it.

I went to a shopping centre the other day and every single young, middle aged and older woman had their lips done it seemed!! Terribly done, so many resemble an allergic reaction and or a marshmallow flump inserted under the top lip. Which is odd because it's not the actual lip that has been plumped. It looks ridiculous!!

I blame Kylie Jenner!

I blame the patriarchy.

porridgeisbae · 06/11/2023 13:46

I had a leftover bit put in and it looks better. But I probably wouldn't bother again as I found it very painful. I think if someone gets a whole 1ml put in it does often look bad.

Horrid horrid horrid. Has anyone seem the instagrammer Gemma Louise Miles, she has awful saggy lip folds hanging down onto her teeth from over pumping her lips and then they've gone saggy, makes me heave. I think she hides it on insta but it is so obvious on her youtube videos. I've never known a single person who it looks good on.

Her lips don't bother me but how much beige can one person fit in their house??

BansheeofInisherin · 06/11/2023 13:48

In which country are Botox and fillers not allowed? Curious to know. I think there are none. It's worldwide now, more or less.

Imagine starting or joining in with a thread that bashes women’s appearances. Fucking grim. Have a word with yourselves.

That said, I can’t help but laugh to myself that some of the women making these vile comments are doing so while wearing something from Seasalt or Boden 🤣

You might want to ask for a refund from that charm school.🤔

Begsthequestion · 06/11/2023 13:51

I think people like how it looks in photos on Instagram etc, which is where a lot of young people want to make the best impression.

I've seen a few strangely altered faces in West London (not just women), and the most startling was a guy and a girl who were bursting with filler and (typically) blocking everyone's path obliviously taking photos of themselves in a park. I'm sure they looked great online but in real life it was just odd, like wearing stage make up off-stage.

where did I say it was not "allowed"?

It's a bit naive to imagine these procedures are as widely available and affordable in the world as it is here.

TravelInHope · 06/11/2023 13:46

I blame the patriarchy.

Why? Most men think they look ridiculous too.

bettercallpaula · 06/11/2023 13:54

I presumed it was an aesthetic which was in fashion which I couldn't relate to. Huge eyebrows, monster eyelashes, long nails and pouty lips. None of it looks attractive to me but I'm not a spring chick and prefer the more natural look. I don't suppose the aim is to look natural though! All these beauty treatments done in moderation might enhance looks but it's done to an extreme and can look ridiculous to some. Yes, I've silently judged!

2023aaa · 06/11/2023 13:55

I agree… it’s the Love Island effect unfortunately!

BansheeofInisherin · 06/11/2023 13:55

Ah ok @Chanelbasketballandchain . Actually, they are more affordable, because less regulated, in some countries. I can get Botox for less than £50 in my home country, if I wanted to, though I would probably end up looking mummified.

oakleaffy · 06/11/2023 13:55

Sadly most people who have them look like they have been whacked in the face by a 🍳 frying pan.
Painfully swollen and with a stiff way of speaking .

Thehop · 06/11/2023 13:58

@Ivegotsunshineinabag you look great.

your lips are one of 3 sets I've ever seen that look good.

I agree OP. I'm all for Botox and fillers if you want them, but filled lips look awful. They don't smile! I do find it fascinating how women with them have to lick their lips all the time to catch spit because they don't move.....and watching them drink from a straw is hilarious!

This made me laugh! What is it with the beige obsession with all these influencers! Their houses used to look like a black and white Polaroid when grey was all the rage now all their houses look like sepia photos!

SallyWD · 06/11/2023 13:59

I agree. I have a gorgeous looking 50 year old friend who I can tell has had fillers. She hasn't said anything but it's so obvious. They just look ridiculous. So unattractive and unpleasant. The thing is, there was nothing wrong with her lips before! I never once though her lips were thin or anything.
She's gone from being a natural beauty to just looking silly and vain.
