What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

Just as bad is those ridiculous eyebrows that look like giant slugs (then again, I'm an old bird too)

Atethehalloweenchocs · 06/11/2023 13:59

I think the problem is not the actual fillers - there are some people with a little where you would not know. But as we get used to certain things, you need more and more - same effect with filters - so you end up looking quite odd because you are using them to the extreme. The Apprentice last year was a really good example of why not to use so many fillers.

queenofthewild · 06/11/2023 14:02

I remember when I was a teen and the Bratz dolls became popular. There was a massive outcry because "children will grown up wanting to look like that". I recall that being a ridiculous assumption because looking like that wouldn't even be possible.

How wrong I was.

BrassOlive · 06/11/2023 14:03

Why all this emphasis on whether they look natural or not, they're not meant to look natural are they? Isn't it about looking a bit glamorous and 'extra', conspicuous consumption and all that? It's just a fashion, it will pass in the same way that ultra plucked eyebrows went in and then out of fashion in my day.

My concern is what's going to happen to women's health when Botox and fillers break down in their bodies?

Silicon implants were deemed absolutely safe... until they weren't. So many women had horrific problems from silicon implants.

Continual use of Botox and fillers cannot be good for anyone's body. I fear that in another decade we'll have women with lots of problems caused by continually injecting their bodies with substances that cause harm.

Botox has been around for several decades now - I wonder if there have been any studies on this. I would be very interested to know if there are any side effects of longterm Botox use.

Yoyoban · 06/11/2023 14:04

@BarbiesWorld I actually wouldn't know you've had filler based on that photo - thanks for posting

Depends on what you want. Some people want a little enhancement that isn't detectable and some want a full on "extra" look.

You can do either.

well don’t get concerned, get educated. Lip fillers are Hyaluronic acid which is what naturally fills your lips. It’s a natural product of the body.

botox is bloody prescribed on the NHS so I’m pretty sure it’s considered safe!

dooooom · 06/11/2023 14:06

A friend of mine has some and it looks v natural - but she hasn't had much

Generally though I think the trend is for it not to look natural so people don't mind as they don't mind people knowing they have had it done

Genuine question to those who have had lip fillers done, if it's stretching out your lips, what happens to your skin when you stop putting fillers in? Does the skin stay stretched out? Wouldn't it be more aging further down the line?

I can answer this. I've had lip filler done in the past. In my mind I thought it looked great, in reality (as confirmed by friends and family), it looked awful. I decided to have it dissolved and now have lines around my mouth that weren't there before. However, I prefer the lines and natural looking lips to the trout pout 😡

Really quite sad and disappointing to see a thread of women slagging off other women on here.

Botox is prescribed on the NHS for actual health conditions, not vanity. Whatever unknown future effects of botox are a trade-off for treating a legitimate problem.

Yes, further down the line they look like smokers with lots of little lines in the skin around their lips.

BarbiesWorld · 06/11/2023 14:12

@Yoyoban thank you 😊I've always had alright lips when my mouth is relaxed, but have been super self conscious of smiling because my top lip used to disappear, fillers fixed it

Thegoodbadandugly · 06/11/2023 14:13

They look like window plungers same with those ridiculous false eyelashes there's nothing attractive in the slightest about either of them.

If you’re going to attempt to take a health perspective then I hope you don’t drink alcohol, smoke, vape, eat takeaway foods, sunbathe, I hope you exercise regularly and maintain healthy weight etc… there’s LOTS of things in life that are bad for us, or could potentially be bad for us. If you do any of them, then you really have no scope for making comments about someone getting a little bit of lip filler if it makes them feel more confident or better about themselves because of potential future unknown effects.

We don’t all have to like the same things as everybody else, that’s what makes life interesting.

Itjustgoesonandon · 06/11/2023 14:15

I work with some younger staff that have had it done and it's honestly all I can look at when I'm talking to them. I find it so comical looking.

lilyroseabell · 06/11/2023 14:15

I've had 2ml put in mine over time (two years) I think mine look great and I don't have the ledge. They've given me much more confidence when wearing lipsticks as I like to wear bright colours (orange, red, bright pink) some do go overboard but each to their own I say 👍🏼

Wednesdaysotherchild · 06/11/2023 14:16

YANBU / looks freakish and unnatural to me (even the ‘subtle ones’).

UsingChangeofName · 06/11/2023 14:16

You are spot on OP.

I agree the tarantulas on the eyelids and the slugs on the forehead also look equally ridiculous, but I feel at least they are a fashion you're just going to be embarrassed about when you look back in 20 years time, that at least doesn't permanently harm your body like injecting chemicals or having tattoos does.

Really quite sad and disappointing to see a thread of women slagging off other women on here.

Must we always have no opinion about other women unless it's nice? Why can't we be honest? Or controversial? Why can't we ignite and contribute to discussion about image and choices other women make about how they look?

I find this play nicely narrative patronising and playing into the patriarchal narrative of women being only sweet and pleasant and unable to handle unpleasant or unkind opinions.

Annna41 · 06/11/2023 14:17

I'm mid 40s and these are a selection of my lips from over the last 14 years.

I would be interested to know if people think I have had lip filler 😊
If so in what pictures?

slore · 06/11/2023 14:17

Back to lip fillers, it's the second worst beauty trend ever, only breast implants look consistently worse. It's beyond hideous. I have never seen any good ones, no matter how natural and subtle they think they look.

I've also noticed that celebrities these days are all getting completely needless nose jobs: Bella Hadid, Kim Kardashian, Marnie from Geordie Shore, Dylan Mulvaney and the like all had perfectly nice noses to begin with. It's like everyone has to have the exact same upturned Barbie nose to be acceptable.

Back in the nineties and noughties there were so many famous women with a great variety of nose shapes. I don't think women like Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Victoria Beckham (and Rebecca Loos!) or Uma Thurman could have become famous in the '10's or 20's.

They look awful especially in profile, I just think of a duck
