What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

Fanofan1 · 06/11/2023 11:51

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

Sorry - I WILL go away after this, but just a worrying eg.

A friend of mine has this look and is constantly hassled by horrible, leering men. She hates it and gets upset. I have to be tactful - I like her very much, so wouldn't be completely honest about my thoughts but I just have to conclude that this kind of look does send out a message and it's not always a welcome one.

Oh, and please...before anyone starts...I'm definitely, definitely not jealous.

I have a friend this happens to- she doesn’t have any filler or enhancements or nails, she is nearer 40 than 30 and her face reflects that (I’m not trying to be horrible-I just mean she looks like an attractive woman of her age). She wears a normal amount of makeup, no fake eyelashes.

Every time we go out she gets hassled, literally every time (in case anyone thinks clothes are relevant here- last time she was wearing thick black tights, a high necked long sleeve, knee length dress and kitten heals).

The only thing we can think is that she is a very smiley woman and has big eyes!

Some men are just horrible and letchy and it isn’t women’s fault.

Did you continue to laugh at the man you didn't find attractive? Did you call him an alien, or say he looked like an animal or a porn star? Did you say how sorry you felt for him that he'd disfigured himself, and all for no good reason, given that 'women' don't like that look? If not, then it's in no way the same as the things some people on here are claiming about men's attitude to 'unnatural' looking women.

Me and my female colleagues did discuss the look further.

I'm sure not all men would be so abusive about a woman's lips. They may say they don't like it. My DH or male colleagues are intelligent men and don't start calling women awful names. People will always have preference of what they find attractive.

I think some of the fillers that have been posted have looked really good. I didn't see one that looked like Katie Price.

dauphnois · 07/11/2023 12:55

As an Asian, you're going to age like a vampire. As in, you just won't!

You are joking of course. I have Asian friends and family, and they are scarcely different as far as aging is concerned.

That'll be a "no", then.

Not all men or all women would do anything. But this idea that men never have anything to say about how women look is totally laughable.

You're one of those posters, aren't you?

We did say somethings but I'm not telling you what.

I'm not one of those posters who insults other women's looks and their characters by extension while giving men a completely free pass, no.

We did say somethings but I'm not telling you what.

That's OK, I'm pretty sure I can guess.

You are doing it again. You have no idea what we said. You can't win an argument by saying That'll be a "no", then and That's OK, I'm pretty sure I can guess unless you are Mystic Meg.

You were asked by another poster whether you gave this guy the same treatment that women who develop fake aesthetics get. You gave a woolly and evasive answer and then refused to share what you did say.

I'm drawing the obvious conclusion here. Keep deflecting it if you like, but it's pretty clear that the answer to the poster's question was "no".

Well you are wrong. We took the piss but I'm not going to tell you exactly what we said. There are things I say to my friends that I don't want to say on here. So Mystic Meg we might as well end this conversation.

Lionoso · 07/11/2023 13:43

I was thinking about this thread last night as I watched an episode of the Morning Show. Jennifer Aniston looks odd now. Her top lip doesn't move properly and her face is oddly expressionless. It's a similar look to lots of older Hollywood actresses. It really affects their acting ability IMO. Nicole Kidman is another example, I feel they just can't convey emotions in their face like they used to.

I then watched Bosch Legacy with Mimi Rodgers in it. Mimi looked completely natural, I don't think she has had any work done and it was so refreshing to see. Amazing actress and still gorgeous at 67. Mimi looks much better than Jennifer or Nicole despite being older than them WITH her wrinkles.

It's their choice of course but it makes me a bit sad as Nicole Kidman is a good actress and had such an expressive face.

You can end the conversation any time you like; no need to give me instructions about it. You just stop replying.

And no, of course you're not going to tell us what you said. Otherwise you'd just have answered the question straight the first time rather than trying to avoid it and then attempting to deflect the whole thing.

If Mimi has aged like that with absolutely no work then she's even luckier than 99% of the women fortunate enough ever to have been that beautiful at all.

Hollywood is absolutely vicious to older women and yet somehow the criticism still falls on them, with the associated analysis and comparison of their looks, rather than the industry movers and shakers...

I DO NOT need to tell you what was said and laughed about to my friends. You are so very wrong it's laughable. It does not mean anything. You are basically arguing by making things up that you know nothing about. It's not the first time I've seen you arguing like this.

I don't really want to do the research, but I suppose if we really want to know what gets the most men off the most easily, then we need to see who the top performing porn and OnlyFans models of the day are and see how natural and classy (whatever that means) they look.

I wouldn't use OF clients as a judge of "most men"!

She looks gorgeous to me because she has wrinkles.

Interesting interview with her in the LA times about why she doesn't want plastic surgery.

She talks about the pressure on older actresses. Hollywood is a harsh place on women but especially older women IMO. Good on her for bucking the trend.

Bias and outright discrimination on the basis of race, gender and age have long histories in Hollywood and broader culture, writes columnist Steve Lopez.

Premiership footballers and male celebrities may not be to your personal taste, but there's no denying they're able to attract their preferred women. I also think its a stretch to imagine that the majority of men who stare at a women who has some enhancements but is stereotypically attractive, are thinking 'Goodness me, she looks fake! Give me natural looks any day!' Some maybe. The majority...I'm not buying it.

Trust me, it IS the majority. The vast majority.

Well, whatever the biggest platform is, then. PornHub or something. Like I said, I don't really want to do the research. But if anyone does, I'd be interested to know what the actual viewing and sales figures show, and how natural and refined and classy (whatever that means) the most sought-after women look.

Which is not to say I think men are extremely picky, because I don't. But if we are looking at their true preferences and what they'll choose first when physical attraction is the top priority...well, let's see.

Can someone please explain what the obsession with looking "classy" is and what actually counts as classy in your eyes?

No fakery. No trout pout, no Botox and no orange face paint.

I'll bite...

I wouldn't use the word 'classy' myself and it would take a crazy person to try to guess what is meant by it, but here are my suggestions:

Not 'obvious' (OK, you've got breasts - put them away, we don't need to see them all the time)
Being reserved in terms of presentation - holding something back (see above) which creates a 'mystique'. It's not all in the shop window.
Not attention seeking or needy - focus on something outside yourself.
Thoughtful, well-read, lots of interests, able to talk to all kinds of people.
Having a considerate attitude to others and taking an interest in them and in the world around you.
Not being ostentatious or being a consipicuous consumer.

That's just my two-penn'orth - you did ask!
