What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

Why has everyone started using the phrase - I have a bridge to sell you?

Lovelillieshatetroubles · 07/11/2023 11:30

'lots of the 'classy' looking partners will be having tweakments too.'

Oh I agree, but it isn't overdone, and looks better. A fake trout pout isn't a good look for anyone.

BarbiesWorld · 07/11/2023 11:31

Can someone please explain what the obsession with looking "classy" is and what actually counts as classy in your eyes?

BansheeofInisherin · 07/11/2023 11:34

Well, I'd like to age like my mum. Failing that, Joan Baez. Unless she has had work done, which I can't entirely rule out. ( Joan, not my mum). That's classy in my eyes. Everyone will have their own definition.

It's an old phrase that's been around for years.

Stylish clothes, tastefully done "tweakments" if any that you cannot tell have been done, not mini shorts with bum cheeks hanging out, not obvious plastic surgery that looks very very fake or anything that is obviously in your face fake.

I honestly wish there was, imo there is an absolutely huge 'on trend' obsession with looking fake to me.

I’m not obsessed with looking classy but bad and obvious plastic surgery to me, isn’t classy.

If your lip filler is huge then that’s not classy in my eyes!

I’d rather see a few lines on an older face which looks more classy to me than none at all.

mapleriver · 07/11/2023 11:40

I have quite done lip fillers and I love them, I don't really want to look discrete about it as I like the done look. Nobody else really has to like them as it's my face, and it's the type of look I enjoy having. Have also had a few different surgeries (jaw, rhinoplasty, genioplasty) and get botox, but I've with my partner for 8 yrs who couldn't care less about how I look aslong as I'm happy, so I'm not doing it for male approval. We live in the middle of nowhere and I don't have to work so I don't see people often for it to be for others anyway, just enjoy having the look.

Actually, as an Asian, I am more likely to look like Madhur Jaffrey as I age. Which is absolutely fine by me. I think she looks wonderful. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/feb/27/madhur-jaffrey-my-guilty-pleasure-crisps-plain-or-with-vinegar

As an Asian, you're going to age like a vampire. As in, you just won't!

CrazyCatLady42 · 07/11/2023 11:42

I have 1ml in mine. I think they look fine. They are not even as big as some people's normal lips. I have absolutely no lips before though.

BansheeofInisherin · 07/11/2023 11:42

Ha @SurprisedWithAHorse I can definitely see bags under Madhur's eyes, but she is 80, so I think it's fine.

I also like the way Emma Thompson looks, but she has probably had very good work.

It’s confidence not neediness. You project the person you actually are.

So having having lots of expensive work, huge lashes etc isn’t fooling anyone that you have normal lashes and you’re not earning Hollywood money and you’re the age you are.
Of course some people look amazing for their age. Most naturally, a few due to a bit of work. But it’s generally good skin care/ facials and a great haircut and dye ie classy rather than the trend for weird lips, puffy fillers or anything else.

isthismylifenow · 07/11/2023 11:47

It is. Really sad. Firstly she looks nothing like Barbie, which seemed to be her aim. Secondly, people who do this extreme amount of work have to have deep issues that should really be looked into first. I am sure there are plastic surgeons who will refuse to do more and then more work (49 surgeries she has had), but then there will always be those who will just do it to make a buck.

The photo of how she looked originally. She was a beautiful woman.

Ulysees · 07/11/2023 11:55

@isthismylifenow yes she was beautiful. Often the case 😔 Surgeons who do this should be struck off. The women need counselling not surgery.

To me, classy would appear as comfortable in your own skin, and the confidence that comes with that. And being unique in your own way and carrying that well. The way you speak, and the way you act.

And not jumping on to every trend that some influencer decides is what everyone should be wearing or doing as people get lost in it,

Oh, and clothing that is ironed, but I think I am in the minority there.

5128gap · 07/11/2023 08:24

Well no, I don't suppose you do! But a quick glance at the partners of high profile wealthy and famous young men clearly indicates there are men who feel differently from those in your circle. I very much doubt those wives and girlfriends with their filled lips are remotely worried about what the husband of the average MNetter thinks about their appearance.

@BarryTaylor

i don’t care what the blokes you know like the look of 🤷‍♀️

See this is where I become confused because who can say what stylish clothes are? Your idea of stylish might be my idea of boring or hideous surely?

BarbiesWorld · 07/11/2023 12:01

@isthismylifenow I'm with you on ironed clothes

I think there's something highly unattractive about a bunch of men who'd sit around criticising and sneering at the appearance of (usually much younger) women. If Clive and Nigel don't like filled lips, they don't have to date women who have them. Generally speaking, the chance would be a fine thing anyway.

Lovelillieshatetroubles · 07/11/2023 12:06

@BarbiesWorld I understand your point, I guess it is the way you want to look at it really isn't it? Bum cheeks hanging out, huge lips wouldn't look stylish to me in the slightest.

Lovelillieshatetroubles · 07/11/2023 12:08

I agree with a pp about jumping on every trend.

Isn't it just the same as women who don't like really muscly men. A man who I worked with showed me some pictures of his mate and I said that it wasn't my cup of tea and I didn't find it attractive. I totally understand that the friend probably wouldn't give a shite about my opinion. People have opinions though.

Also, not all Mumsnetters are married to ugly blokes called Clive or Nigel.

Did you continue to laugh at the man you didn't find attractive? Did you call him an alien, or say he looked like an animal or a porn star? Did you say how sorry you felt for him that he'd disfigured himself, and all for no good reason, given that 'women' don't like that look? If not, then it's in no way the same as the things some people on here are claiming about men's attitude to 'unnatural' looking women.
