What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

Fanofan1 · 06/11/2023 11:51

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

As has been demonstrated by several women posting on this thread, small amounts of lip filler can look really lovely, and certainly natural, but more to the point, if the woman in question is happy and more confident for having it done, it’s hard for me to judge that very harshly at all.
Having said that, I saw my husband’s cousin the other day for the first time in about a year, she’s off at uni at the moment so visits home are rare. She clearly has got a bit carried away with the filler and has rather noticeable sausage lips now, they seem to protrude straight out and have that strange tubular appearance. It’s so sad, she’s still beautiful of course but not the stunning natural beauty she was.

I don't know a single bloke who thinks filled lips look even remotely good.
Show quote history
Well no, I don't suppose you do! But a quick glance at the partners of high profile wealthy and famous young men clearly indicates there are men who feel differently from those in your circle. I very much doubt those wives and girlfriends with their filled lips are remotely worried about what the husband of the average MNetter thinks about their appearance.

Hmm - the whole WAGS aesthetic is not a very edifying one! To me it has overtones of 'How do you want me to look, darling billionaire boyfriend?'

That's what I'm getting at when I question the type of man it all appeals to. Do they have any interest in the individual woman, or do they want a compliant sex doll who's desperate to please them?

I have no idea what these men want from their partners. All I can do is observe what is available in the public domain. People have made quite definitive statements about men hating enhancements. My point was that is not reflected in the choices of many men who are wealthy, young, attractive and high status. These men can have their pick from a wide variety of 'types', yet frequently choose women with a look people on here claim 'men' hate.

If for some unknown reason people have genuinely gone around canvassing male opinion on enhancements, it's hardly surprising if men have said they dislike 'duck lips' 'Fake looking hair extensions' 'orange tan' 'spider eye lashes' 'slug eye brows' or whatever unflattering description used to conjure up the worst possible execution of the 'glamour' asthetic.

The real tests of whether the look is attractive to men is to note the choices of high status men who have options. And to watch Joe Average with his eyes on stalks when a tanned, full lipped, fluttery eye lashed long haired blonde passes by.

Obviously this doesn't mean all men like it. But equally a MNetters husband not liking it doesn't mean no men do.

Working in a school that gives out food parcels I can tell you there's women with nails, lips, eyebrows, eyelashes all done with kids on FSMs & collecting a food bag weekly 🙄 it's priorities not income that dictates who does it.

Ah but....it depends on your definition of 'high status men'!!!! I'm guessing that we would differ on that. Wayne Rooney isn't my bag.

And sure - most men would notice the person you describe, but their reasons for eye-popping might be different - and not necessarily admiring. And I say this from personal experience, not imagination!!

CoffeeCantata · 07/11/2023 10:32

Or Donald Trump - and I'm not saying Melania has had work done...just that, when I think of the kind of look we're discussing, that's the image I get.

CoffeeCantata · 07/11/2023 10:35

Sorry - I WILL go away after this, but just a worrying eg.

A friend of mine has this look and is constantly hassled by horrible, leering men. She hates it and gets upset. I have to be tactful - I like her very much, so wouldn't be completely honest about my thoughts but I just have to conclude that this kind of look does send out a message and it's not always a welcome one.

Oh, and please...before anyone starts...I'm definitely, definitely not jealous.

I mean it's pretty obvious that she's had extensive work done.

Lovelillieshatetroubles · 07/11/2023 10:44

I think there are alot of men who do actually prefer natural over the drag look atm. When I say natural I mean a normal level of makeup, natural nails and no fake hair/enhancements. I do think most men when they think of no makeup think this is a woman with light makeup on. Everything is so overdone that normal makeup looks like none these days. I think it'll be good when this look goes out of fashion. It also seems like the trend to wear nothing and tiny pants through the day even in winter!

This can't be true? Can it?

Perhaps a parent paid for the treatments if she's on a low income.

Premiership footballers and male celebrities may not be to your personal taste, but there's no denying they're able to attract their preferred women. I also think its a stretch to imagine that the majority of men who stare at a women who has some enhancements but is stereotypically attractive, are thinking 'Goodness me, she looks fake! Give me natural looks any day!' Some maybe. The majority...I'm not buying it.

Well if your definition is "men I like", or better yet, "men who like me" then it's rather self-fulfilling/circular, isn't it?

dauphnois · 07/11/2023 10:54

The fake hair is the worst one for me, but that's been around for a long time one way or another (additional hair pieces women used were criticised in a similar way, even in Victorian times).

The hair never looks real, and one girl said it cost upwards of £700 then monthly costs to maintain. The impact on existing hair can perpetuate the cycle.

SnapdragonToadflax · 07/11/2023 10:55

CoffeeCantata · 07/11/2023 07:41

Is it more a UK thing, or do other countries have this to the same extent?

I hate the lip-filled, botoxed, weird eyebrow and plastic talons look because I find it embarrassingly, overtly sexual and attention-seeking. But also - the whole aesthetic is just too 'try hard' - I think that in itself is unattractive.

I think the essence of true style is to look as if you haven't tried at all - (which may in fact involve quite a lot of effort!!) but for my money is much more appealing. And the kind of men who like this kind of thing would not be my type at all....

It's not just UK-specific, it's incredibly area-specific. I live in a town where it's quite a popular look, you see women with it regularly. I often visit a town that's only an hour away but very different vibe, super middle class/crunchy/hippy. You see no fillers at all. It's really striking when I come back home and suddenly I've seen three women with fake lips before I've even left the station.

Footballers maybe but I think if you look at the partners of the most famous young male actors you will see that they are pretty but not fake looking.

As an example I've just googled Taron Egerton's girlfriend. She is very classy looking.

@SpicedAppleAndFreshCider

I have to agree with this. The WAG artificial over sexualised look seems very popular amongst footballers etc, with that outdated 'alpha male' wolf whistling attitude. Most high profile actors etc seem to have stylish classy looking partners.

CanIPetThatDawg · 07/11/2023 11:17

lots of the 'classy' looking partners will be having tweakments too.

SurprisedWithAHorse · 07/11/2023 11:18

Haha, if you believe that women in Hollywood/ the acting industry don't get anything done then I've got a bridge to sell you.

BansheeofInisherin · 07/11/2023 11:20

I would think every single woman in the public eye- actors, singers, WAGS, influencers, royals, some politicians- has got tweakments. That is my problem. We are going to lose sight of what women are supposed to look like as they age, and think everyone must look like Jennifer Aniston.

Anyone who’s a celeb has more money than the average person in the street so in theory access to better surgeons.

A few years ago DM hosted foreign students and one was Swiss and his DF is/was a plastic surgeon.

SurprisedWithAHorse · 07/11/2023 11:21

I don't really want to do the research, but I suppose if we really want to know what gets the most men off the most easily, then we need to see who the top performing porn and OnlyFans models of the day are and see how natural and classy (whatever that means) they look.

I agree with you. On the one hand I see eg Gillian Taylforth (Kathy in Eastenders) and she’s had a bloody good face lift. But she doesn’t look like a woman her age is supposed to look.

Would I do it? Probably not. I’ve got fairly good genes though. But never say never.

I’m not sure they do all look classy. But their careers depend on looking younger so of course most of them do it. The ones who deny it, probably have it done.
