What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

Bloody love my lip fillers - before I had virtually no lip at all; if I wore red lipstick my mouth looked like a gash. Now I have actual lips. Hooray!

Did you mean to be this funny?😂

IAmtheVampiresWife · 07/11/2023 03:21

I happend to be browsing the Beauty and the Boutique website after this and was HORRIFIED to see Katie now with lip fillers. The before and after pic is for a mascara from a year or two ago I would say and the other is from recently. They just look awful and have made her lose her individuality.

On these posts you always get someone posting a photo of themselves claiming how natural their fillers look when it's obvious that they look like they've been filled and also look awful.

This is just such a mean mean thing to post when someone has already shared their photo and the story behind it.

Truly unpleasant behaviour, why?

No fillers here btw - but just really mystified at the reason for this nasty post.

wensleywhale · 07/11/2023 06:04

How do full lips, full eyebrows, long lashes signify health?

Because when we age we lose lip volume, and lose hair density.

Are you being obtuse?

ShiteRider · 07/11/2023 06:09

So you mean they signify youth then?

hellohellothere · 07/11/2023 06:22

I thought they were fading in popularity. They've been around for ages. Isn't the fake look dying?

I have to agree. It looks dreadful.

It changes her whole face.

I am not a fan of fillers anyway. I think most of the photos posted are very obviously filled.

I was shown a photo of my niece whom I haven't seen in a while. She was in a group of 3. I could not pick out my own family member as all three of them looked exactly the same. I can get past the same eyebrows, fake tan (even though she is really fair so she looked even more fake tanned as they were all the same shade), the hair extensions all the same. And then the lips. All of them not subtle in the slightest. They looked like clones of each other.

All I could think was, what happened to individuality.

They are mid 20s so I assume they now have to have fillers forever more as that must have stretched out skin.

A lot of people on mumsnet seem a bit judgemental about women even wearing makeup “I’d rather spend time with my kids…” “my husband soooo prefers my natural look” etc etc so Botox and fillers is always get a right slagging off here!

Not true. Botox gets repeatedly recommended on here. Fillers not so much and especially lip fillers but I think that's because they can more easily go wrong and leave you with lumps and strange looking features.

Youth and health go hand in hand.

Why are people being wilfully ignorant on this.

Oh, Botox gets slagged right off too, trust me.

This thread is really good. I liked looking at all the photos.

I have only seen one woman in real life with very obvious lips, she was working in the shop and they looked enormous and incredibly sore, I thought maybe she had just had them done recently but they were really very big and her whole mouth area was bulging.

I’m just amazed how everyone else can afford the upkeep of all of this, there are 3 clinics near me here and business is booming.

i saw a study and it showed the participants photos of people with obvious surgery and inflated lips, then rated how shocked they were, but then showed them more and more and by the end of a short period, they got used to the enhancements and didn’t think them unusual at all (after looking at just a few photos).
So they concluded that the more you see it, it just becomes normal.

CoffeeCantata · 07/11/2023 07:41

Is it more a UK thing, or do other countries have this to the same extent?

I hate the lip-filled, botoxed, weird eyebrow and plastic talons look because I find it embarrassingly, overtly sexual and attention-seeking. But also - the whole aesthetic is just too 'try hard' - I think that in itself is unattractive.

I think the essence of true style is to look as if you haven't tried at all - (which may in fact involve quite a lot of effort!!) but for my money is much more appealing. And the kind of men who like this kind of thing would not be my type at all....

I think it is more of a UK thing. I am not in the UK and I don't know anyone who has had fillers or even considered it. That is not to say that no one has had it done, I see there are some local influencers that very obviously have got onto the trend though. But then they are sponsored and it is advertising for certain clinics etc.

It is not that popular with the younger 20 something crowd though. Seeing as I have children in that age bracket and so I am surrounded by that age group quite a lot.

Also, the all the same hair extensions and fake tan that I keep seeing photos of, are not a thing here.

My dd and most of her friends all have shorter length hair, it is more of the beachy wave type of look that is more popular here.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough.

I take issue with this, it's a dehumanising view of women to have to think that 'we' can't think for ourselves and things just happen to us.

BodegaSushi · 07/11/2023 07:56

wensleywhale · 06/11/2023 12:13

It's so gross to look at though

Women don’t exist to look appealing to you

She was so pretty, it's aged her instantly.

Or it’s accepting that we don’t exist in a vacuum and are subject to outside pressures and influences both consciously and unconsciously.

Mrsjaffacakeys · 07/11/2023 08:12

I agree with you 100% and I think it's quite sad really that so many women are doing it. I look at my own dd 8 and think how lovely and beautiful she is just as she is and hope I bring her up to know she doesn't need to put any of this crap into her body.

Sorry I did also mean to add on that fashion trends are quite different here too.

If I am at a popular tourist area in my country, I can take a very good guess who is from the UK. As everyone seems to be turned out the same. The floral dress and sports trainers with every outfit is just one example.

I was waiting for someone at the airport when a BA flight arrived, and did a good amount of people watching as they walked through. Most of the woman of age say 30 up all looked very similar, including the same style of clothing, and the men all seemed to be wearing the same pair of trainers.

From an outsiders pov, trends seem to be taken quite seriously

(Then the flight I was waiting for arrived, and people came out wearing basic leggings, jeans and t-shirts and pretty disheveled after a long flight 😂)

DeadBugMountainClimber · 07/11/2023 08:01

Or it’s accepting that we don’t exist in a vacuum and are subject to outside pressures and influences both consciously and unconsciously.

But this is life. The way we decorate our homes, the products we buy, the type of foods we eat, the cars we drive, the way we parent our children. All based by the trends and schools of thought at the time.

We take in the world around us and make informed decisions based on what we think is best for ourselves. The brain does engage.

I don't know a single bloke who thinks filled lips look even remotely good.

Well no, I don't suppose you do! But a quick glance at the partners of high profile wealthy and famous young men clearly indicates there are men who feel differently from those in your circle. I very much doubt those wives and girlfriends with their filled lips are remotely worried about what the husband of the average MNetter thinks about their appearance.

That's clown-like and quite sad really.

Doesn't it make women look a bit...gormless?

Youth and health go hand in hand.

Why are people being wilfully ignorant on this.

Not necessarily, unless you’re talking about illness / disability in much older people rather than health.

Many older people are a lot healthier than younger people, in terms of lifestyle, weight, fitness etc.

No one is being wilfully ignorant, they just think you’re wrong.

Hmm - the whole WAGS aesthetic is not a very edifying one! To me it has overtones of 'How do you want me to look, darling billionaire boyfriend?'

That's what I'm getting at when I question the type of man it all appeals to. Do they have any interest in the individual woman, or do they want a compliant sex doll who's desperate to please them?

Oh, like you or anyone else cares. It's just another way to weaponise, validate and attempt to intellectualise the fact that you don't like this look and want to feel superior to those who do. Barely any of the women with this look are actually trophy wives of super rich men. It's just a way to use the phenomenon to castigate them further.

These fillers and so on actually do a wider service than I realised. Without them, some people would need to do something difficult to feel superior.
