What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

You might with a side view or seeing her in RL.

That's when the shelf looks more obvious, especially in natural light.

I'll take a little bit of a shelf any day if it makes me comfortable smiling in pictures and infront of people. Never hidden the fact I have fillers and when I eventually save up enough to get my gappy teeth sorted I won't hide that either.

I’m imagining half the women on this thread slobbed out in trackies screaming about ‘natural’ being better.

While you’re sat there with your filled-but-natural lips in your cocktail dress, full face of make up & high heels. Thanks n a Monday night, at home?

riiiiight🤣

Each to their own and all that but I don't really understand what's wrong with having thin lips. Who decided bigger lips are better?

I’m assuming it’s because lips naturally lose fullness in the ageing process so therefore fuller lips are a sign of youth and therefore fertility? I guess it’s the same reason why people get facelifts, Botox and dye their hair. Subconsciously, whether we want to admit it or not, it’s about keeping that young (and therefore) fertile look for as long as possible.

SirChenjins · 06/11/2023 20:45

Blimey - are you still wanging on jane? 🙄

My post was pointless, your post was pointless, yada yada.

I have DDs in their 20s who are confident and happy with the way they look, without feeling the need to have cosmetic surgery. But they are girls who do things and lead full and interesting lives, not girls who spend their time obsessing about their eyelashes and nails.

Are the 2 mutually exclusive? I've never led a full and interesting life because I've had nails and lashes done since my early 20s? I don't do things because I chose to get filler? Must be nice on that high horse of yours

LuckySantangelo35 · 06/11/2023 20:49

A lot of people on mumsnet seem a bit judgemental about women even wearing makeup “I’d rather spend time with my kids…” “my husband soooo prefers my natural look” etc etc so Botox and fillers is always get a right slagging off here!

@Thundercnut

lol I know of doctors who get their lashes etc done. Do you think that don’t have full and interesting lives?

Do women who do look after they're appearance not have interesting lives?
My DD has a professional job; very successful, fosters and trains support dogs and has travelled extensively and shock, has her lips and eyelashes and nails done!!

Rein in your snobbery.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 06/11/2023 20:58

Haven’t rtwt
but @Ivegotsunshineinabag and @Batshitkerazy you both look lovely.
I was considering getting a little bit done - never had anything like this before- and I think I will now

Growlybear83 · 06/11/2023 21:05

I've never seen anyone with lip fillers whose lips didn't look unnatural. But what I don't understand is why women want to have thick lips? Surely nice thin lips look much nicer?

Chocolatefreak · 06/11/2023 21:07

It's interesting how the lips are such a UK phenomenon. I live in France and the eyelashes here can be a bit full on and sometimes eyebrows, never lips. Everything is generally more subtle than in the UK. Less makeup, more emphasis on healthy diet and lifestyle etc. The appearance of young girls and women in the UK is almost clownish - it's just normalised because it's become acceptable to go totally over the top. Standing on the tube and seeing those painfully inflated lips close up is excruciating. And yes maybe there are many that are restrained and unnoticeable but they are completely outnumbered by the clownish ones! Why are we so abusive to ourselves in the UK?!

Seadragonusgiganticusmaximus · 06/11/2023 21:13

Isn’t this all just some sort of observation / selection bias? We notice the ones that look unnatural (and because they can look so weird we remember them) and so tend to conclude that they all lip fillers create an unnatural look. There might be many more natural-looking ones out there but we don’t notice those.

bombastix · 06/11/2023 21:20

There is a whole series on TikTok about the appearance of young UK women re lips eyebrows, eyelashes and tan. It is not complimentary either.

Some of us have thick lips naturally! They look as nice as thin lips do

DrFoxtrot · 06/11/2023 21:26

It's not just the fullness of the lips - has anyone else noticed that the mouth itself seems to widen? It looks really odd on some people. I wonder why it happens, maybe other fillers and things rather than just the lips?

It's hard to find a good example

WinteryWonderland · 06/11/2023 21:29

I also think they look dreadful! Like an allergic reaction and so obvious.
Sheep who just blindly follow.
I also think all the cheap fake lashes young girls wear and ridiculous huge eyebrows look equally awful/fake/trashy.One day they will look back and laugh at photos of themselves I'm sure!

grottyb · 06/11/2023 21:51

@DrFoxtrot I was going to say VB was an example of that. Jennifer Aniston too.

KnittedCardi · 06/11/2023 22:07

I'm trying to find the article I read today. Some drag artist was delighted to see that women were adopting drag style enhancements and make up. Just yuk.

Also blame Love Island, The only way is Essex etc etc

HerMammy · 06/11/2023 19:13

What a nasty thread to read, snobbery at its finest, sneering at 'a certain group' hideous, naff, ugly etc
Women now have the money and treatments are affordable, I'm sure some of our mums or grannies would have liked some of this to be a visible to them.
Women can choose exactly what they want to look like.
MN seem to assume we should be in joules/ boden, never colour our hair or change our appearance.
Whether you like it or not, to fill a thread sneering and judging other women is pathetic.
Hope none of your DDs grow up and face your bitchiness.

Oh FGS! I've been dyeing my own hair since I was 12, I live in my Primark jeans, and couldn't afford joules or boden unless I won the friggin lottery!

Have you ever taken a moment to consider why you believe the things you've listed (full lips, full eyebrows, long lashes, non-grey hair, straight white teeth etc) are the definition of 'good looking' and should be aspired to?

Those things signal health. Which is universally attractive

How do full lips, full eyebrows, long lashes signify health?

I've never looked at a person with big eyebrows and thought you know what they look like they could run a marathon.

Wait till you get a bit older and your eyebrows get more sparse and even worse, you find some grey hairs in there!
