Armistice day irrelevance to Pro-Palestine

'It's not a time for political demos': War heroes demand pro-Palestine protest on Armistice Day is cancelled - as Met chief Mark Rowley comes under pressure to ban marches amid fears they could spark clashes over Remembrance weekend | Daily Mail Online
So, we buy and wear poppies to remember those who died having fought in WW1. Armistice day was the ceasefire between the allies and Germany on the 11th of November at the 11th hour 1918. We can only ‘remember,’ because we were not there and hence the ‘Remembrance day.’ Yes, I do poppies and I wear them, although I wear the white one that is brooch as a pacifist. And yet the call for a ceasefire is not being heard, in a land faraway, close to the birthplace of Jesus Christ, home to the Abrahamic faith people are being slaughtered, a genocide, horror is very much present today. The idea is so hypocritical, beyond belief. To remember the dead, and not see this relevance today just makes me feel sick, especially when this country is utterly responsible for the chaos in Palestine and Israel.

War heroes demand pro-Palestine protest on Armistice Day is cancelled

The latest 'Day of Action' ended in ugly scenes as protesters surrounded British Legion poppy sellers during a sit-in protest at Charing Cross.

I agree, they're utter hypocrites. Peace only applies to particular people under particular circumstances it seems. It smacks of racism and western supremacy. It beggars belief that so many governments are supporting this genocide.

No - it is absolute nonsense to talk about racism and western supremacy. Remembrance Day is supposed to be a day of
quiet and respectful remembrance. It is disrespectful to use this day.

"Never Again".
I choose to take this literally, and to apply universally, present and future.
It is a perfect occasion to call for ceasefires and to celebrate peace and pacifism.

VivienneDelacroix · 07/11/2023 01:16

Armistice Day is to remember the horrors of war and remind ourselves "never again". It's a very apt day to highlight the plight of Palestinians, anyone who thinks it isn't is creating a hierarchy of worthy lives.

"utterly responsible for the chaos in Palestine and Israel. "

We're really not.

watchingtheworldwithwoe · 07/11/2023 01:34

I agree. It's poignant that the two things are scheduled so close together.

Please explain how you arrived at this conclusion

I agree. I'm a peace activist. That includes Ukraine, Myamar, Yemen....

Dunno my husband's grandfather helped liberate Belsen,( and was traumatised by what he seen there) then was sent over to Israel and was shot at by the Israel Army, whilst the British Army were defending Palestine . How batshit is that? This was just before the establishment of the State of Israel. So it shows how utterly awful and senseless war always is. We should always look for peace.

LlynTegid · 07/11/2023 06:57

People died in Palestine especially in the first world war and should be remembered.

notimagain · 07/11/2023 07:15

Well I don't know much but I do know that if the some think the preferred solution to this scheduling conflict is to ban Armistice Day or Remembrance Sunday then they've badly misjudged the mood in the UK outside of their particular political bubble.

I agree - the history of the area and its conflicts should be common knowledge by now.

I can see tensions are high during protests, but this one day of the year Remembrance Day is our countries day of respect for our war dead , as such all other protests have 364 days of the year to march on, please respect our day.

Echobelly · 07/11/2023 07:36

I'm Jewish and I really hope the march goes ahead. I would join myself especially because of the stupid media coverage if I didn't have another big commitment that afternoon.

The killing and destruction in Gaza will not stop for a day because it is Remembrance Day so why should the protests stop? It is a weekly protest that just happens to be on Remembrance Day this week, rather than a protest that has been deliberately scheduled on Remembrance Day to be provocative.

SerendipityJane · 07/11/2023 07:42

"No fighting in the war room !"

Yirk · 07/11/2023 07:47

Then as you say the killing won't stop, surely by respecting Remembrance Day it, won't make any difference to the protesters message.
I don't know if I'm right but if the protest does cause any trouble at the Remembrance service, this could affect our countries support for the Palestinians.

aswarmofmidges · 07/11/2023 07:49

Respect for the dead

But Remembrance Day to me was much more - remembering why and how they ended up dead , remembering that they fought and died to bring peace

If we don't stand up and say this must stop about the current conflict we are failing the fundamental remembrance act

mellongoose · 07/11/2023 07:51

We can all strive for peace in the Middle East and hopefully we all do.

Armistice Day is for Britain to remember our war dead and to commemorate those who serve. I believe the protests should give way and stop trying to battle for attention on this day.

Echobelly · 07/11/2023 07:52

Some people have suggested Braverman is going on about this (aided by the papers) because she's hoping more 'exteme' and fewer moderates will turn up and/or that right wing thugs will turn up to oppose the march (oh the irony) and basically one way or another she can then claim that she was right this march would cause trouble.

Echobelly · 07/11/2023 07:54

@mellongoose - the protestors weren't going for attention, they are carefully avoiding clashing with remembrance events or sites.

It's Braverman and the tame media that have kicked up this fuss about it.

Livelovebehappy · 07/11/2023 07:56

Don’t be silly. This country is not responsible for what’s happening in Palestine. You really think our government has power to stop what’s happening over there? You’re very delusional if that’s what you think. Armistice Day is totally separate to what is happening over in Israel, and should not be linked in any way. We are remembering our own people too who died in the world wars. The war in Israel is not our war, and the protests on our streets will achieve nothing but whip up hatred and antisemitism. The protests are becoming increasingly hostile as the protestors are failing to get the majority onboard, and it’s only a matter of time before these protests become battle grounds. The war in Israel was the fault of Hamas and the people who welcomed them as their leaders. It’s not our war, and is so totally removed from what Armistice Day represents for our country.

And because ‘some people’ are suggesting this (who? Links of actual quotes from actual people please), it’s fact? Okay……

BethDuttonsTwin · 07/11/2023 07:58

I've woken up today to read of the death of an elderly Jewish man who was hit over the head with a megaphone by a "pro Palestine" supporter, and a poppy seller in his 80s in Edinburgh who was assaulted - punched in the back then kicked in the side as he bent down to try to remove the money made from selling poppies - by, yes, you guessed it by pro Palestine demonstrators. So peaceful, so honourable, so decent.

Those are just two of the attacks I have read of. Yes these marches need to stop. There will be serious civil unrest if they do not and as always it will be the weak, vulnerable and elderly who suffer the most. I am baffled by the blind support of these POLITICAL marches by so many MNetters who clearly have no real idea what they're supporting and are just following the narrative they're told to. I will try to be polite, if you genuinely believe that these demonstrations are just about the poor Palestine people, I beg you to find other sources for your information.

4,000 + children and infants have died in this genocide where our leaders have been part of this.
