Armistice day irrelevance to Pro-Palestine

'It's not a time for political demos': War heroes demand pro-Palestine protest on Armistice Day is cancelled - as Met chief Mark Rowley comes under pressure to ban marches amid fears they could spark clashes over Remembrance weekend | Daily Mail Online
So, we buy and wear poppies to remember those who died having fought in WW1. Armistice day was the ceasefire between the allies and Germany on the 11th of November at the 11th hour 1918. We can only ‘remember,’ because we were not there and hence the ‘Remembrance day.’ Yes, I do poppies and I wear them, although I wear the white one that is brooch as a pacifist. And yet the call for a ceasefire is not being heard, in a land faraway, close to the birthplace of Jesus Christ, home to the Abrahamic faith people are being slaughtered, a genocide, horror is very much present today. The idea is so hypocritical, beyond belief. To remember the dead, and not see this relevance today just makes me feel sick, especially when this country is utterly responsible for the chaos in Palestine and Israel.

War heroes demand pro-Palestine protest on Armistice Day is cancelled

The latest 'Day of Action' ended in ugly scenes as protesters surrounded British Legion poppy sellers during a sit-in protest at Charing Cross.

Calling for Free Palestine is not inherently anti -semitism @WarmWinterSun.
A free Palestine would mean somewhere where people could move in and out of the country with a passport like normal countries. Or where another country didn't control essential services. Or where settlers couldn't illegally force you out of your home and burn your livelihood to the ground.
Or where children's right to safety as innocent civilians on both sides could be respected.
All these things are part of peace in the Middle East.

If that was what it meant, it would be lovely

The reality is something very different, and much more, erm, genocidal

From your Western bubble, the 'free Palestine' might appear to look like that, but it really isn't that. Israel is occupying Palestinian land.

WarmWinterSun · 07/11/2023 10:37

@ismu

That is one fair interpretation. In practical terms it would also mean Israel is left very vulnerable to attack by the armed terrorists on its doorstep. So a simple ‘Free Palestine’ sign may sound nice but for Israelis it could mean they should have to accept being left vulnerable to precisely the type of attack they experienced last month. The irony is that Britain fought in WWII to protect vulnerable Jews. I think the ‘Free Palestine’ signs are loaded and while some may think they are peaceful, others could have a different interpretation.

Well given the current mood expressed by many above ("lest we forget", "genocide" etc) I for one look forward to the marches continuing post any Israeli cease fire.

For example I hope there's a similar level of protest in London about the appalling loss of life in wars such as the long ongoing Saudi - Yemen conflict...or am I being optimistic?

No chance, that one isn’t “trendy”. Same as Mali where the presence of British troops is largely ignored by the media. Or Ukraine which has been all but forgotten now a more “worthy” cause has come along.

LifeofBrienne · 07/11/2023 10:39

I wish people arguing about this would get their facts straight:
There is NO Palestine demo planned for Remembrance Sunday which is when the events at the Cenotaph etc. take place.
The march will be on the Saturday which is of course Armistice Day, but not when events traditionally take place other than the silence at 11am. The route as I understand it is well away from the Cenotaph.
For me therefore the grounds for trying to ban it, if the Home Secretary does so, seem entirely spurious - it will not interfere with peaceful commemorative events on Remembrance Sunday in any way.
I know that people have different views on what is meant by slogans such as 'Free Palestine' but there are important principles of free speech and the right to protest.
Oh, and apparently more civilians have now been killed in Gaza than in the whole of Russia's war on Ukraine. The idea that ordinary people who want to join the main protest calling for a ceasefire can't do so without being accused of being part of a hate protest by the Home Secretary is quite disturbing.

ismu · 07/11/2023 10:42

@WarmWinterSun @hamstersarse two very different interpretations of my post!!
I think that illustrates a lot about this issue. On one side people who won't accept any protest to support Palestinians at all. On the other side the view that most of Israel is illegal colonialism. There's no doubt that they have taken land illegally but they are there now and not all of them are right wing supporters of Netanyahu.
But there needs to be a solution which does not involve setting the clock back to 1940 or 2000BC. A peaceful ceasefire is the only way now. Put war aside. There will be a ceasefire eventually, how many must die first?

therealcookiemonster · 07/11/2023 10:44

just to clarify for anyone who thinks otherwise (i was confused myself), the protest is on the SATURDAY, not on remembrance Sunday when the services are held.

Oliotya · 07/11/2023 10:26

It's been a day of quiet reflection for decades. And still, same old shit, endless death and destruction.
You spend the day as you see fit, as will I.

Don’t pretend you’re all about peace and reconciliation.

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/11/2023 10:51

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the March on the Saturday, in the afternoon so after the 2mins silence and not going anywhere near the cenotaph where the Armistice Day service is being held on the Sunday?

The only thing currently planned for the Sunday near the cenotaph is a far right counter protest in aid of not protesting near the cenotaph on Remembrance Day.

StarTrek6 · 07/11/2023 10:52

I think it’s Stella demonstrating how pro Israeli she is.
im sure the march is well after 11am.

although the police mentioned other groups so maybe they are expecting trouble- but I can’t imagine they’d ban it -it doesn’t break the rules and people (troublemakers ) would turn up anyway -who know where.

IrishLondoner · 07/11/2023 10:53

A silent March would be good. No noise - just silence. That would be powerful. But there are too many who shout and scream in people’s faces. Not very peaceful.

StarTrek6 · 07/11/2023 10:53

SUELLA

StarTrek6 · 07/11/2023 10:54

SUELLA not Stella

She’s making her pitch for Tory leader the only way she knows how. This week it’s tents and protestors. Next week she’ll have found another enemy to fight.

As a pp has pointed out it's getting confusing.

Saturday, 11th - that's Armistice Day....there is at least one fairly small official commemorative event held at the Cenotaph on the day. Tends also to be a day when some others attend the Cenotaph to pay respects to the fallen if they don't want or are unable to joint the major official commemoration. That will be part of the reason the met don't want the other march in the area on Saturday.

Sunday 12th, that's Remembrance Sunday

bonkersAlice · 07/11/2023 11:12

Calling for Free Palestine is not inherently anti -semitism. Yes it is, “ from the river to the sea” is calling for the destruction of Israel.

But it isn’t in the area. It’s not going anywhere near Whitehall or the cenotaph and will be hours after any event held at 11am.

The police might be better off telling cruella to stop fanning hatred by calling them hate marches in every interview she does.

I think you need to read up on the reasons why WW2 happened. It wasn't to protect vulnerable Jewish people. Winston Churchill was a rampant antisemite and was fully aware of the camps. His priority was to win the war, not save the people in the camps. Besides, Israel came about precisely because, after the war, no European countries wanted Jewish refugees.

ismu · 07/11/2023 11:28

"From the river to the sea" isn't calling for the destruction of Israel @bonkersAlice and there's a lawsuit with regard to this at the moment.

DdraigGoch · 07/11/2023 11:35

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 07/11/2023 08:02

I understand that Remembrance Day is hugely important and significant for a lot of people. What I don't understand is how a march against war could be considered disrespectful.

Surely, it is honouring the victims of previous wars to say no to more senseless killing? And surely it is honouring the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedoms to exercise those freedoms by protesting against things that we find to be morally wrong?

Have you seen how these protestors behaved in Edinburgh and London? How does punching a poppy seller and chanting anti-semitic slogans contribute to a solemn and dignified occasion?

I would have no objection to a vigil.

No - it is absolute nonsense to talk about racism and western supremacy. Remembrance Day is supposed to be a day of
quiet and respectful remembrance. It is disrespectful to use this day.

No. It is supposed to remind us why they fought for our freedoms in the first place. 'Never again'. What is happening now renders that utterly meaningless. It's reduced the day to performative nonsense.

Well I don't know much but I do know that if the some think the preferred solution to this scheduling conflict is to ban Armistice Day or Remembrance Sunday then they've badly misjudged the mood in the UK outside of their particular political bubble.

The march is on Saturday (Armistice Day, which is about a ceasefire, just like the march is).

Remembrance Sunday is on Sunday…
