Please tell me where! I've been to the Isle of Wight and looked in all the places I was told about, no luck. Same to a place in Scotland they apparently live in the garden, nowt. Please help me see one!

if you see a grey one on isle of wight, you have to report it

Mytholmroyd · 03/11/2023 19:01

Yes - in the wild in North Yorkshire where we live and on the patio of our house at Centre Parcs in the Lake District - they came every day!

Yes - in the wild in North Yorkshire where we live and on the patio of our house at Centre Parcs in the Lake District - they came every day! They actively remove the greys as they carry a virus that kills the reds.

ErrolFinn · 03/11/2023 19:02

I'm lucky to see them almost daily in Perthshire. It's much more common to see the reds here than greys!

OliviaFlaversham · 03/11/2023 19:04

Brownsea island for me too. Went for a day trip and were told they’re often around the feeding posts behind the church and they were.

MyCircumference · 03/11/2023 19:04

saw a white one a couple of years ago in east sussex, on more than one occasion

In 2007, the deadly squirrel pox virus reached the Formby area, wiping out around 80% of the red squirrel population. A hard winter further reduced the population to only 15% of the pre-pox level. However the population recovered, and was recorded at the time to revert back to approximately 85% of the levels that were recorded in spring 2002.
But spotting a Red Squirrel in Formby is becoming a rare occurrence, even with the efforts of Freshfield Reserve, Merseyside and Lancashire Red Squirrel Trust and the National Trust. Many guests who have recently visited the reserve have taken to TripAdvisor stating they were disappointed to not see a single one!
The Trust have said recently that it seems they are still recovering from a recent squirrel pox outbreak in 2019, and have confirmed that there has been an increase in red squirrels sighted across Ainsdale. However, they also mentioned an increase in grey squirrels across the reserve.

The National Trust's Freshfield Reserve is famous for its red squirrels, but how many are there left? Read more here.

I've seen them playing on the lawn at Osborne House IOW.
Saw some this summer in Cumbria (notably at Aira Force waterfalls).
Never seen any in Northumberland though.

DelphiniumBlue · 03/11/2023 19:06

I lived in North London as a child, and red squirrels were everywhere in the 60's and 70's, certainly Highgate, Muswell Hill and Epping forest.

No but I've been to IOW and Jersey but no luck! Apparently there is a Squirrel Wood in IOW so am going to go back. It's on my bucket list lol.

TorroFerney · 03/11/2023 19:10

Centerparcs whinfell as others have said, particularly near the treetop trek place. Can’t take to them personally, much prefer a grey, more robust. Reds look like they’d be whingers.

ComfyBoobs · 03/11/2023 19:10

Saw one in the Dordogne earlier this year. Really strikingly fox red - you couldn’t mistake it.

Violinist64 · 03/11/2023 19:11

I saw one on the Isle of Wight a few years ago when I was on holiday.

In my back garden. West of Ireland. They collect the hazel nuts every year so see them on autumn and spring. It's all red squirrels west of the Shannon.

Yes, the Shannon has protected the red squirrels in the West of Ireland from the advance of the American interlopers.

Joonio · 03/11/2023 19:17

Mountstewart NT in N Ireland has them.

welcometothnuthouse · 03/11/2023 19:18

I wrote and published a story about the reds on the Isle of Wight and the greys trying to get over from the mainland to the island. Humour and lovable characters.
Anyone interested? PM me.

FairFuming · 03/11/2023 19:19

We have hundreds here in Aberdeenshire. They are magical to watch

Branleuse · 03/11/2023 19:23

France.

RandomUsernameHere · 03/11/2023 19:23

Jersey, there are no greys there. We lived there for a while, the first time I saw one I got super excited. The locals were staring at me, probably thinking how strange I was, as to them it's just like seeing a grey one!
