Carrying on from the school hymns thread I thought I would ask if any of you remember your Brownie or Guide songs? For some strange reason many of these are stuck in my head, to pop out from time to time including the actions 😂. I'm taking home my baby bumble bee, This little guiding light of mine, Oh I had an Aunty an Aunty Monica (and when she went out shopping they would all say ooh la la, because her hat is swaying, swaying to and fro) Our chalet, Camp fires burning, Kookaburra and a game we played called Walk the Deck.

I remember my mum's brownies singing this one, and all the leaders were fat 🤣
Sorry thought I was replying to the one about a skinny little brownie and a fat girl guide, a leader etc

Ohh you'll never go to heaven
Oh you'll never go to heaven
In a baked bean tin...
As a baked bean tin's got baked beans in

Oh you'll never go to heaven in a clapped out car
As a clapped out car won't get that far.... 🎶

Kukaburra sits in the ol gum tree...... 🎶

Ging gang gooly gooly gooly gooly wotcha ging gang goo, ging gang goo....🎶
Confused Grin

Riverlee · 03/11/2023 21:53

I think we could probably a separate thread for ‘you’ll never to heaven” verses!

Riverlee · 03/11/2023 21:54

“Ging gang gooly gooly gooly gooly wotcha ging gang goo, ging gang goo..”

One of my favourites.

Sammysquiz · 03/11/2023 22:22

I used to hate the Corpses one, we used to sing it in the dark!

I can’t remember all of it just…

‘saw two corpses carried in
very pale and very thin
ooh ooh ahh ahh
The corpses to the lady said
youll be like us when you’re dead
ooh ooh ahh ahh
the lady to the corpses said
SCREEEEEAAAAM’!!

Hideous.

I also remember one about meeting Mary & Joseph, the chorus went

‘with the wind in the willows
and the birds in the sky
there’s a bright sun to warm us
wherever we lie
We have bread & fishes and a jug of red wine
to share on our journey with all of mankind’

My dad was a lavatory cleaner
He worked all day long at the pit
When he came home in the evening
he was covered all over in shh.......

Chorus
Shine up your buttons with Brasso
Its only 25p a tin
You can buy it or nick it from Woollies
But i doubt that if they've got any in.

Some say he was buried in a graveyard
Some say he was buried on a pit
But we all know what he was buried in
He was buried in six foot of shh.....

Chorus

curaçao · 03/11/2023 22:45

To the tune of ' my bonnie lies over the ocean'

MrTiddlesTheCat · 03/11/2023 23:02

My fav was always Johnny's Lost His Marbles. Very long song involving him shoving people up the chimney to find his lost marbles. Eventually shoves some dynamite up there and blows the roof off. Then he finds his marbles. ... in his pocket!

Fladdermus · 03/11/2023 23:06

A cow kicked Fred in the head in the barn
The doctor said it wouldn't do him any harm
So we all kicked Fred in the head in the barn
Second verse, same as the first
But a little bit louder and a little bit worse ...
[repeat until screeching level is reached]

Ambroserock · 03/11/2023 23:30

So many lovely memories! I remember almost all of these but does anyone else remember "The cow kicked Nellie in the belly and the bum"? That's the only line I can remember, although I think it was repeated several times before a final line I can't remember. Same tune as Glory glory

YireosDodeAver · 04/11/2023 07:46

I remember going to a big multi-pack celebration which must have been in 1984 because it was the 70th anniversary of thr foundation of the Brownies organisation and we sang a song that went

We are 70
We are 70
We are 70
Well done, well done well done.

Not amazingly well written lyrics there.

I won a pencil case as a prize for the fancy dress competition being a spider in a web.

FluffMagnet · 04/11/2023 07:56

We LOVED pink pajamas at Brownies. It ended up being banned for a couple of terms as the new Brown Owl thought it was inappropriate but she ended up giving in after loud and repeated pleading.

Loving these memories and more ideas ro teach my DC. DD loves Kookaburra and Animal Fair already, but at 4 struggles with the songs that go in rounds (and DH refuses to learn them to show her what I mean).

WildAndFree123 · 04/11/2023 08:07

I love this thread, so many happy memories.

We also did one that was Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver the other gold. We sang it as a round.

There were 10 in the bed and the little one said "roll over, roll over". So they all rolled over and one fell out, he bumped his head and gave a shout, "oh please remember, to tie a knot in your suspenders, single beds are only made for 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9"

There were 9 in the bed and the little one said. Etc

Ah, I can only do the dirty version of that one.

There's a dirty version?

There's a dirty version?

So they all rolled over and one fell out, he bumped his head and gave a shout, 'ah ya bastard, I've banged my balls on the bedside cabinet, single beds are only made for 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9"

Yes, I know. But now I can't sing the clean version in case I forget myself and sing the dirty one by accident.

We sing 'cow kicked Nellie in the belly on the farm x3, farmer said it would do no harm.' Then ' next verse same as the first, a little bit louder and a little bit worse' repeated at ever increasing volume.

Becles · 04/11/2023 19:16

My brownies favourite songs at the moment are:

Georgie
Mrs O'leary's cow
40 years on an iceberg
Princess Pat
Swimming pool
Black socks
Chicken
Jo and the button factory
The rattling bog

Ambroserock · 04/11/2023 19:57

Ah I remember the version we sang now! Thank you, helpfulperson, it was "the cow kicked Nellie on the belly and the bum, the farmer said it was just for fun"!!

Amammai · 04/11/2023 20:05

Great thread! I have taught so many of these songs to my classes (primary teacher) over the years.

An Old Austrian
I’m Alive Alert Awake
Do Your Ears Hang Low
A mouse lived in a windmill
The Danish Counting Song

So many happy memories. I didn’t like Guides as much because they didn’t sing all the same songs 🤣

Blondeissimo · 04/11/2023 20:06

Barges!

Yes! This was one of my favourites.

Countdowntowhat · 04/11/2023 20:22

Ging gang goolie, but also this one which looking back I do not understand why we were singing it 👀 I think a girl taught the group but the leaders didn’t stop it being sung around the fire.

I wear my little nightie in the summer when its hot
I wear my pink pyjamas in the winter when its not
And sometimes In the winter
and sometimes in the fall
I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all
Oh that’s the time you oughta see me
That’s the time you oughta see me
That’s the time you oughta see me
When I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all.
