Brownie and Guide songs

Carrying on from the school hymns thread I thought I would ask if any of you remember your Brownie or Guide songs? For some strange reason many of these are stuck in my head, to pop out from time to time including the actions 😂. I'm taking home my baby bumble bee, This little guiding light of mine, Oh I had an Aunty an Aunty Monica (and when she went out shopping they would all say ooh la la, because her hat is swaying, swaying to and fro) Our chalet, Camp fires burning, Kookaburra and a game we played called Walk the Deck.

Linger isn't in the least bit suggestive! It's about the last night round the campfire, making new friendships and looking forward to reconvening after the summer break. It's a lovely song.

I agree but our leader was adamant that it was.

That's interesting, I've always understood it that they were on summer camp together (presumably from different groups) and probably wouldn't meet again but would keep the memories.
I love all the variation in lyrics and interpretations of these songs - it would make a great dissertation project !

It's many years since I sang it, so I could well be mis-remembering the bit about reconvening! Or confusing it with a lovely song we sing at my choir which references 'when/until we meet each other again'.

I didn't mean to criticise, I just find it fascinating. It might be another case of different lyrics in different areas.

This is what I sing (ignoring the mmmms because I can't be bothered to type them all !)

I want to linger / a little longer / a little longer here with you
It's such a perfect night / it doesn't seem quite right / that this should be my last with you
And come September / I will remember / our camping days and friendships true
And as the years go by / I'll think of you and sigh / this is goodnight and not goodbye
I want to linger / a little longer / a little longer here with you

PinkyDinkyDoodle · 01/11/2023 11:38

We used to sing the Uist Tramping Song.
Come along, come along, Let us foot it out together,
Come along, come along, be it fair or stormy weather,
With the hills of home before us and the purple of the heather,
Let us sing in happy chorus, come along, come along.

(possibly because we’d learned it on the Singing Together radio programme at school.)

Did anyone else do Canadian Taps?

Softly at the end of day,
As our campfire dies away
Silently each Guide should ask,
Have I done my daily task?
Have I kept my honour bright?
Can I have my sleep tonight?
Have I done and have I dared,
Every thing to be prepared?

Day is done, gone the sun
From the sea, from the hills from the sky
All is well, safely rest
God is nigh.

Another I remember is:
There’s a long, long worm a crawling along the ridgepole of my tent.
I can hear the whistle calling and it’s time I went.
There’s some cold, cold water waiting for my morning wash
And when I get back the worm will be on my pillow, squish squash.

N4ish · 01/11/2023 11:42

Aw, this thread is just a lovely trip down memory lane. I'm now humming all these songs to myself :)

Oh yes, definitely a Gang Show song. But we used to sing it round the campfire too.

I love Riding Along on the Crest of a Wave. As far as I know every Gang Show has their own dance routine for it.

My ship sailed from china is one I remember most. Along with Taps. Pizza Hut! (Decades before it was a pop song!)

Tzena and Auntie Monica (and her swinging hat!) were my favourites and I was introduced to go well and go safely when my girls were in guiding.

My ship sailed from china always makes me cry - my wonderful brownie and guide leader used to sing it, years and years ago. She was T1 diabetic and died in her early 30s. Still miss her many years on, I can still picture her now. Her mum and dad were the most wonderful, gentle souls and her poor mum never got over it.

Favourite brownie and guide songs for me - havent read the full thread so probably mentioned already -

All together again we're here

Doodily do (simplest thing there isn't much to it, all you gotta do is doodily dot it...)

Baby shark - the PROPER version (ie went for a swim, swam far out, went further out, but there were sharks... a mummy shark, a daddy shark, a grandma shark, a grandpa shark, a baby shark ... they took a leg... and an arm)

The princess pat (rigabamaboo)

Stirring the purple soup

Singing in the rain (as in the one with lots of actions to it)

Thunderation

@Waitwhat23

Little cottage in the wood
Little man at the window stood
Saw a rabbit running by
Knocking at the door he cried:

Help me! Help me! Help me! he said
Before the farmer shoots me dead

Come little rabbit come inside
And happy we shall be.

We sang a couple about worms:

Going down the garden to eat worms

and

The worms crawl in and the worms crawl out,
They go in thin and they come out stout.
Oooh-ooo, oooh-ooo
Whenever you see a hearse go by,
Remember, one day, you've got to die.

I loved "Land of the Silver Birch" and "She sat neath the lilacs and played her guitar". We also sang "Darling go home your husband is ill". They were really quite dark and nowhere as wholesome as the songs my girls sang in Brownies and Guides - "Tiptoe through the tent pegs" and "Hello, my name is Joe"'

OMG, my mum used to sing that rabbit one years ago when I was tiny! Not heard that in years!

ineedtospeakup · 01/11/2023 12:55

The other one we used to do was the British Rail menu -

Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee (slow)
Fruit and custard (x 4, but a bit faster)
Cheese and biscuits.. (x 4 and faster)
Beef and carrots (x 4 and faster)
Fish and chips (even faster)
Sooooooup.

(I might have the order wrong, its been a long time!)

Sounds vaguely like a train if you do it right.

Ham and eggs as well (I like mine done nice and brown) - used to end up screaming at the end

Dahlia444 · 01/11/2023 13:01

I can't see my favourite listed here- I can't remember all the details I'll have to look it up. Something like...

She sat in her hammock and played her guitar, played her guitar, played her guitar (rpt)

She then went on to have a man sitting next to her, she fell out of the hammock (I think?) and died and went up to heaven ('flip flop she flied'). A whole romantic saga. I loved it! Hope I can find the full words somewhere.

That's a version of the folk song 'she sat 'neath the lilacs'

CesareBorgia · 01/11/2023 13:49

She sat 'neath the lilacs and played her guitar,
Played her guitar, played her guitar.
She sat 'neath the lilacs and played her guitar,
Played her guitar ha-ha-ha. He sat down beside her and smoked his cigar,
Smoked his cigar, smoked his cigar.
He sat down beside her and smoked his cigar,
Smoked his cigar ha-ha-ha.
He said that he loved her but oh how he lied,
Oh how he lied, oh, how he lied.
He said that he loved her but oh how he lied,
Oh how he lied ide-ide-ide.
They were to be married but somehow she died,
Somehow she died, somehow she died.
They were to be married but somehow she died,
Somehow she died ide-ide-ide.
He went to the funeral just for the ride,
Just for the ride, just for the ride.
He went to the funeral just for the ride,
Just for the ride ide-ide-ide.
He sat on the tombstone and laughed till he cried,
Laughed till he cried, laughed till he cried.
He sat on the tombstone and laughed till he cried,
Laughed till he cried ide-ide-ide.
The tombstone fell on him and squish-squash he died,
Squish-squash he died, squish-squash he died.
The tombstone fell on him and squish-squash he died,
Squish-squash he died ide-ide-ide.
She went to heaven and fluttered and flied,
Fluttered and flied, fluttered and flied.
She went to heaven and fluttered and flied,
Fluttered and flied ide-ide-ide.
He went to t'other place and frizzled and fried,
Frizzled and fried, frizzled and fried.
He went to t'other place and frizzled and fried,
Frizzled and fried ide-ide-ide.
Now the moral of this story is never tell lies,
Never tell lies, never tell lies.
Now the moral of this story is never tell lies,
Never tell lies ies-ies-ies.

I used to gave a doll that sang the rabbit song - the kind of doll with a tiny cassette in its back - but there was something wrong with the cassette and the song ended abruptly with a sort of hiccup, as if the rabbit had in fact been shot. Sad

There were eggs, eggs
As big as ----legs
In the store, in.the store
There were eggs eggs
As big as ----legs
In the QuarterMaster s store

CHORUS
My eyes are.dim
I cannot.see
I have not brought my specs with me
I have not brought my specs with me

I'm interested in which ones you think wouldn't be sung. Because we still sing all of these. Yes some of the lyrics are a bit 'naughty' but just a bit of fun.

I remember a guide one that one of our leaders wouldn't let us sing because it was suggestive. 'Mmn I'd like to linger, mmn a little longer, a little longer here with you.

”We are the red men, feathers in our head men
Powow, powow
We are the red men, feathers in our head men, down among the dead men
Powwow”

I know they’re mostly just for fun. I had fun singing them and I’m having fun reminiscing about them on this thread too.

BlazingWorld · 01/11/2023 14:46

yes, we did Canadian Taps although I didn't know that was what it was called.

One that cracks me up had the chorus "They are Guides, all Guides, and in unexpected places/ You will see their friendly faces/ And a helping hand besides" (just imagine them all popping up from the undergrowth) although I get a lump in my throat later on, at "You may join them where you will/ For the gate is open still/ And the Guides of today, will find their way, to the path across the hill".

Land of the Silver Birch was my favourite. I also liked "Little Johnny England, he went a-wandering, he went a wandering, all day long."

I was a Guide in the 80s but I think we tended to sing the songs our Guider had sung in the 60s! "Captains they are married, Lieutenants are engaged/ Patrol leaders go courting, although they're under age/ Seconds they have boyfriends, as many as they please/ But all the poor old Girl Guide gets is a Scout with knobbly knees...Oh we ain't gonna camp no more, no more, we ain't gonna camp no more/ We camped last night and the night before, and we ain't gonna camp no more."

OwlOfBrown · 01/11/2023 14:48

CesareBorgia · 01/11/2023 07:51

We sang one starting:

We're Brownie friends, we're Brownie friends, we're here to lend a hand
To love our God and serve our Queen and [that's all I remember]

I didn't last long in Brownies because I felt like a hypocrite over the God bits, having been brought up by non-believing parents.

We're Brownie friends, we're Brownie friends, we're here to lend a hand
To love our God and serve our Queen King and help our homes and land
We've Brownie friends, we've Brownie friends from North, South, East and West
We're joined together in our wish to try to do our best

We still sing it at the end of Brownies every week

Wtafis · 01/11/2023 14:49

DD has just been bought a pair of pink pyjamas, I’ve been regaling her with that one 😁

DH recently started as cub leader, was trying to teach him some but they all seem to be wildly inappropriate for current sensibilities 🙈

OwlOfBrown · 01/11/2023 14:52

We also sing this one

I've got something in my pocket, it belongs across my face.
I keep it very close at hand, in a most convenient place.
You'd never, never guess it if you guessed a long, long while.
So I'll take it out and put it on, it's a Great Big Brownie Smile!

Oh, you've just reminded me of another one! Possibly another verse of the one you've mentioned-

Leaders go by motor cars,
Assistants go by bus,
Patrol Leaders have bicycles, and never make a fuss,
Seconds they have roller skates and roll along the way
But all the poor old Girl Guides get is marching all the way.

That's the way they treat the Girl Guides,
That's the way they treat the Girl Guides,
That's the way they treat the Girl Guides,
When they go off to camp.

BlazingWorld · 01/11/2023 15:11

@Waitwhat23, yes yours sounds like a different version of the same song, there were loads of verses, one was food I think - the leaders got turkey and duck but I can't remember what the Guides got - and one was soap, of all things - can't remember any of them apart from "Seconds use something or other, that makes their faces shine, but all the poor old Girl Guide gets is Lifebuoy every time".
