Brownie and Guide songs

Carrying on from the school hymns thread I thought I would ask if any of you remember your Brownie or Guide songs? For some strange reason many of these are stuck in my head, to pop out from time to time including the actions 😂. I'm taking home my baby bumble bee, This little guiding light of mine, Oh I had an Aunty an Aunty Monica (and when she went out shopping they would all say ooh la la, because her hat is swaying, swaying to and fro) Our chalet, Camp fires burning, Kookaburra and a game we played called Walk the Deck.

Another vague recollection of one going like…

Dr wishy-washy wishy-washy 99, he sure got drunk on a bottle of wine.

Another one: ‘Have you ever seen a Zulu wobbling, if you look at me, a Zulu you will see.

Another one: O’Reilly is dead and O’Reilly don’t know it. It’s was about two pissed old Irish men

All wouldn’t be sung today.

MoonriseKingdom · 31/10/2023 23:33

My daughter is a Brownie and she sings the Pizza Hut song including verses about toys and cars.

I was never a Brownie but the song about a baby going down the plug hole is this!

Cream - Mother's Lament

There’s one we used to sing which is inappropriate now but my kids laugh when I sing it.

Verse:

I wear my pink pyjamas in the summer when it’s hot

And I wear my flannel nightie in the winter when it’s not

And sometimes in the springtime and sometimes in the fall - I jump in to my little bed with nothing on at all.

Chorus….

That’s the time when you should seeee meeee
That’s the time when you should seeee meeee That’s the time when you should see me…when I jump in to my little bed with nothing on at all.

Ahh I cross posted this one. I'm glad you remember it because I've not come across anyone else who does. I was starting to think I'd dreamed it.

FizzyWizard · 31/10/2023 23:35

They're both of them dead in the very same bed and yet neither one knows that the other is dead.

I don't think they do O'Reilly to it any more @Moveoverdarlin but it's definitely still being sung - I think it's now "one brother is dead and the other don't know it, his brother is dead and the other don't know it, they're both of them dead in the very same bed and yet neither one knows that the other is dead."

There were eggs, eggs walking about on legs in the stores etc.

We also sang one that went :
I wear my pink pyjamas in the summer when it's hot,
I wear my flannel nightie in the winter when it's not,
But sometimes in the spring time,
And sometimes in the fall
I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all.
That's the time you ought to see me,

That's the time you ought to see me,
That's the time you ought to see me, when I jump into my little bed with
nothing on at all.
I'm now slightly dumbfounded as to how that was ever considered OK for 8 year olds to sing.

Pink pyjamas is one of my Brownie unit's favourites Blush we sing a different chorus though, which I think changes the tone slightly - doesn't imply anyone watching, and (if you want to go that deep) says that you shouldn't judge people for their clothing choices (or lack of !)
Glory glory alleluia
Glory glory alleluia
Glory glory what's it to ya ?
If I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all

@Waitwhat23

Little cottage in the wood
Little man at the window stood
Saw a rabbit running by
Knocking at the door he cried:

Help me! Help me! Help me! he said
Before the farmer shoots me dead

Come little rabbit come inside
And happy we shall be.

We sang a couple about worms:

Going down the garden to eat worms

and

The worms crawl in and the worms crawl out,
They go in thin and they come out stout.
Oooh-ooo, oooh-ooo
Whenever you see a hearse go by,
Remember, one day, you've got to die.

I loved "Land of the Silver Birch" and "She sat neath the lilacs and played her guitar". We also sang "Darling go home your husband is ill". They were really quite dark and nowhere as wholesome as the songs my girls sang in Brownies and Guides - "Tiptoe through the tent pegs" and "Hello, my name is Joe"'

FizzyWizard · 31/10/2023 23:39

PandaG · 31/10/2023 22:56

Most of the above, and
on top of spaghetti (meatballs)
Adaptation of barges - out of my tent flap looking in the night, I can see the guiders having a fight... Guiders I woukd like to fight with you, I would like to beat you black and blue..

And 'oh you'll never go to heaven... On a boy scout's knee... Cos a boy scout's knees.. Too knobboly' (or you never know where.... His hands might be!!!! '

30+ years later I am somewhat disturbed by the underlying messages!

We used to do you'll never get to heaven in Captain's bra cos Captain's bra won't stretch that far

Ironically Captain's bra would have been the one with the best chance of reaching to heaven 😅

It's definitely the call to watch nude pre teens that with hindsight seems wildly inappropriate. Good to know it lives on in a slightly less voyeuristic form!

My baby has gone down the plug hole was an old music hall number from the 1920s. We didn’t sing it at Guides but my grandma used to sing it when we had a bath! Charming 😂

So many of them now wouldn’t be sung for reasons of cultural appropriation or dodgy, gruesome or insensitive lyrics 😂 The aeroplane one for example:

They pushed him out an aeroplane at a hundred thousand feet,
They pushed him out an aeroplane at a hundred thousand feet,
They pushed him out an aeroplane at a hundred thousand feet,
And he ain’t gonna jump no mooo-re.

Glory, glory what a hell of a way to die,
To push you out an aeroplane when you don’t know how to fly,
Glory, glory what a hell of a way to die,
And he ain’t gonna jump no more!

He landed on the runway like a splat of strawberry jam,
He landed (x 3 etc.),
And he ain’t gonna jump no more!

Glory, glory etc.

Verse 3: They scraped him off the runway and they took him home to mum, x 3 etc.

Verse 4: They put him on a sandwich when the vicar came to tea, x 3 etc.

Verse 5. I can’t remember any more, but it did go on for ages.

Not so much attuned to the sensibilities of today 🤣

UsingChangeofName · 31/10/2023 23:43

Good morning friend Brownie is probably the only one exclusive to Brownies.

The rest are all Campfire songs, which, by their very nature get tweaked and adapted to things specific to your Pack / Troop / Colony / Unit / Company.

FizzyWizard · 31/10/2023 23:44

@asterel we used to sing "he jumped without a parachute from forty thousand feet" and then chorus "glory glory what a hell of a way to die, when you're wearing frilly knickers and you don't know how to fly, glory glory what a hell of a way to die, and he ain't gonna jump no mo-or-ore!"

Barges!

Barges, I would like to sail, with you,
i would like to sail, the ocean blue.

Apparently written by someone in hospital looking outside.

Boomboom22 · 31/10/2023 23:50

In the bumble bee one squishing it together and licking your hands
And one about squawking wife's, and headdresses?

Our version went:

He jumped without a parachute from 40,000 feet

He landed on the runway like a little blob of jam

They scraped him off the runway with a little plastic spoon

They put him in a matchbox and they sent him home to mum

She put him on the mantelpiece for everyone to see

She put him on the table when the vicar came to tea

The vicar spread him some toast and said what lovely jam

PandaG · 31/10/2023 23:51

Glory, glory what a helluva way to die, suspended by your braces when you don't know how to die,
glory, glory...
And he ain't gonna jump no moo.. Oor oore!

I’m sure ours had a chorus of something like:-
I ain’t gonna grieve my Lord no mo-or-ore,
I ain’t gonna drink, I ain’t gonna swear,
I ain’t gonna - ooh, you wouldn’t dare!
I ain’t gonna grieve my Lord no more.

or am I conflating two songs?

so many ear worms from this thread!

God yes you’re right!! Now i’m getting confused between two songs! Bedtime I think (preferably with an Ovaltine or a hot Bovril, our campfire drinks of choice 😂)

I ain't gonna drink or smoke or swear, I ain't gonna pull my sister's hair Grin

That's the chorus for oh you never get to heaven!

Oh you never get to heaven in a biscuit tin, cos a biscuit tin's got biscuits in,
I ain't gonna grieve
My Lord no mo-o-re
I ain't gonna grieve I ain't gonna worry
I ain't gonna leave this place in a hurry
I ain't gonna grieve (ai ee ai ee)
My Lord no more

DC's pack do "I ain't gonna shout I ain't gonna swear, I ain't gonna pull my sister's hair" 😂

OwlOfBrown · 31/10/2023 23:57

Down in the jungle where nobody goes
There's a big fat gorilla picking his nose
And he picks it and he flicks it
Where does it go
Who's gonna get that, who's gonna get that, who's gonna get that slimy snot?

My Brownies love that one!

QM's Store chorus is "My eyes are dim, I cannot see, I have not got my specs with me, I have noooooot got myyyyyyy specs with me" (or I left my specs in the WC)

Riverlee · 31/10/2023 23:59

Teenage - this was mentioned upthread. It’s a long, long time since I thought of this.

Tzena, tzena, tzena, tzena, can’t you hear hear the celebrations,
In the village hall, village hall, (repeated)
you will find us, join the celebrations, a
There’ll be people from every nation,
tzena, tzena, tzena (can’t rembeober how it ended - repeat if first line?)
