Carrying on from the school hymns thread I thought I would ask if any of you remember your Brownie or Guide songs? For some strange reason many of these are stuck in my head, to pop out from time to time including the actions 😂. I'm taking home my baby bumble bee, This little guiding light of mine, Oh I had an Aunty an Aunty Monica (and when she went out shopping they would all say ooh la la, because her hat is swaying, swaying to and fro) Our chalet, Camp fires burning, Kookaburra and a game we played called Walk the Deck.

Teenage - this was mentioned upthread. It’s a long, long time since I thought of this.

Tzena, tzena, tzena, tzena, can’t you hear hear the celebrations,
In the village hall, village hall, (repeated)
you will find us, join the celebrations, a
There’ll be people from every nation,
tzena, tzena, tzena (can’t rembeober how it ended - repeat if first line?)

I think we sang

Tzena, tzena, tzena, tzena, can’t you hear hear the music playing In the village square (repeated)
Tzena, Tzena, join the celebration
There'll be people there from every nation
Dawn will find us, dancing in the sunlight
Dancing in the village square

DwightDFlysenhower · 01/11/2023 00:10

They were still singing "He jumped without a parachute..." at the last gang show I went to.

But it was also being sung in rounds by some very enthusiastic Cubs, so I suspect a lot of the nuances of the lyrics were missed by the audience. Grin

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me
I think I’m gonna eat worms
big fact juicy ones , wee thin skinny ones
see how they wriggle and squirm !

cut off their head and suck out the blood
And throw their skins away
nobody knows how I survive
on worms three times a day.

the wee thin skinny ones slide down easily
the big fat hairy one stick
nobody like me, everybody hates me
I’m think I’m gonna be sick

Bleah < sounds effects >

Ohh, I was just typing this out to post! We had short, fat fuzzy ones and long thin skinny ones though!

Christine7 · 01/11/2023 00:30

a more tasteful one

Hmmm, I want to linger.
Hmmm, A little longer.
Hmmm, A little longer,
Here with you.

Hmmm, It's such a perfect night.
Hmmm, It doesn't seem quite right.
Hmmm, That this should be,
My last with you.

Hmmm, And come September,
Hmmm, we will remember,
Hmmm, our childhood days,
and friendships true.

Hmmm, And as the years go by,
Hmmm, I'll think of you and sigh.
Hmmm, This is good night
And not good bye.

we also sang lots of songs in rounds but I can’t remember what they were .

ThisGirlCantAlways · 01/11/2023 00:34

Think we had one about ham and eggs, I like mine done upside down, flip em flop em, ham and eggs…. There were more lines I think and each one got louder and louder

Christine7 · 01/11/2023 00:35

Be kind to your web footed friends
for a duck maybe somebody’s mother
who lives all alone in a swamp
where it’s always cold and damp
You may think it’s the end of my song
and you’re right but to prove I’m a liar
I’ll sing it to you once again
only this time, I’ll sing it higher.

This obviously started very low and then was repeated until we were all screeching .

Christine7 · 01/11/2023 00:42

We sang this every night at the end of brownies/ guides. I don’t know at the time why it was called Taps, but I know now that’s the name of the tune which is played on the bugle.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the sea, from the hills, from the sky
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

PuttingDownRoots · 01/11/2023 00:43

There has been a few songs mentioned where I know the cruder versions song by the Army and I don't dare teach my Cubs and Scouts as I don't trust myself to use the sanitised lyrics.

MadisonAvenue · 01/11/2023 01:14

I must’ve gone to the most boring Guides, I don’t remember us ever singing anything except Taps.

HoHoHoliday · 01/11/2023 01:35

I'm probably older than others who have answered this thread - no Pizza Hut when I was in Brownies!

Some of these songs are very familiar. We also often sang Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag, and It's a long way to Tipperary. You can join the two songs together for extra fun.

Artichokepiglet · 01/11/2023 01:55

We sang Baby Shark (back in the 90s), but it was a different version that started with 'there was a boy duh duh duh duh duh duh, there was a girl duh duh duh duh duh duh, went for a swim duh duh duh duh duh duh, and there were SHARKS (then mummy shark, daddy shark, baby shark and toothless granny shark)

Toddlerteaplease · 01/11/2023 04:04

Something about a cowboy that

fell off his horse and bashed in his heard.
There was blood on the saddle,
Blood on the ground,
Great big blobs of blood all around'

And a song about Pizza Hut

TackyTimes · 01/11/2023 06:48

So many of these! Weirdly, I was teaching my toddler the eating worms song in the car yesterday morning!

We also had:
My granny went down to the cellar,
To see where the gas leak may be.
She lit up a match to see better,
Oh bring back my granny to me!
Bring back, bring back, oh bring back my granny to me, to me [repeat]

And there was Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar

Bandol · 01/11/2023 07:13

After the school hymn memories yesterday I’m now overwhelmed by guide song memories!

l loved Land of the Silver Birch. One that I’ll add that I remember that we sang a lot around the camp fire was One Tin Soldier. We had a collection of battered song books with the lyrics to all the songs - typed on a typewriter, photocopied and pages stapled together.

TroysMammy · 01/11/2023 07:30

My ship sailed from China with a cargo of tea
All laden with treasures for you and for me
They brought me a fan and imagine my bliss
When I found myself going like this and this and this
Actions of fanning oneself, keeping it going whilst singing again then crossing legs, then nodding head etc etc

Bingo - there was a farmer who had a dog and Bingo was his name O, B I N G O, then with each chorus reduce the name to B I N G, B I N etc etc

In a cottage in a wood with actions. However when I went back to Brownies as an Assistant Guider Brown Owl banned that one because of the action of the farmer with a gun! Squishing a baby bumble bee was fine though!

Oh you'll never go to heaven in Brown Owl's car coz Brown Owl's car won't get that far.

TroysMammy · 01/11/2023 07:33

I heard Princess Pat on an activity day but never sang it whilst I was a Brownie or Guider.

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 01/11/2023 07:42

Ging gang goolie was my favourite.

Also the rhyme of my six (proud Gnome sixer here!) often replays in my head for no reason. “We’re the ever helpful Gnomes. Helping others in their homes!” Usually pops up when I’m tidying up after DCs.

And a song about Pizza Hut

“A Pizza Hut, a Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut!”

Another one that’s gonna be on repeat in my head all day now 😄

CesareBorgia · 01/11/2023 07:51

We sang one starting:

We're Brownie friends, we're Brownie friends, we're here to lend a hand
To love our God and serve our Queen and [that's all I remember]

I didn't last long in Brownies because I felt like a hypocrite over the God bits, having been brought up by non-believing parents.

Sluj · 01/11/2023 07:52

We are the red men, feathers in our head men
Powow, powow
We are the red men, feathers in our head men, down among the dead men
Powwow

We also sang one mentioned earlier with slightly different words -

Did you ever think as the hearse goes by.
Oooo, aaaa
The time will come for you to die
Ooooh aaaa
Etc then on about worms wriggling in and out.

Both quite macabre but we did have our brownie meetings in a crypt 🤣

PollyannaWhittier · 01/11/2023 07:56

I didn't last long in Brownies because I felt like a hypocrite over the God bits, having been brought up by non-believing parents.

We're Brownie Guides, we're Brownie Guides, we're here to lend a hand
To love our God and serve our Queen and help our homes and land
We've Brownie friends, we've Brownie friends in North, South, East and West
We're joined together in our wish to try to do our best

That one was an official Brownie song, but was retired when the promise changed to not mention God.
