What is the worst-tasting drink you have ever had ?

I've had plenty of ropey glasses of water (chemicals, fluoride, iron) and off milk. But my all time champion is Greene King IPA, absolutely the most foul, disgusting beer I have drunk in 34 years of legal alcohol consumption. The one pint I managed to finish didn't taste remotely of beer, more like weak golden syrup with some unspeakable additives. Many years ago, I had a glass of Merlot which tasted like burning rubber. My guess is that it wasn't off but needed longer in the bottle to mature. Regardless, it was horrible.

My late parents were both fans of pastis drinks such as Pernod and Ouzo. Just the smell was enough to put me off. Eww.

Decades ago, I'm reliably informed that the ubiquitous Watney's Red Barrel was the gold standard for witchpiss in the brewing industry.

Liquid potassium, ironically given as I had no potassium from vomiting. I still had none as it made me vomit.

Yep, that is truly vile. And all the nurses would stand and watch me drink it, smirking and telling me how vile it is.

Coconut water
Bloody Mary
Whiskey
Eggnog

All utterly vile and vomit inducing

Giggorata · 26/10/2023 18:51

Another Red Bull loather here. Ye gods, you can smell it from the next room, and it is awful, surely the febrile sweat of poison victims mixed with varnish and petrol. 🤮

A Persian drink called “doogh” which my DH insisted I try. I didn’t know it was made of fermented yogurt (think fizzy Yop without the sugar) and gobbed it out instinctively. Caused a bit of a diplomatic incident with the IL’s.

Pushkinini · 26/10/2023 18:55

I must be weird as I like quite a lot of the drinks mentioned here including Earl Grey, Lapsang Souchong, Bloody Mary, Pastis, Ouzo and Aperol Spritz.

The worst thing I've tasted is Cod Liver Oil, closely followed by Moviprep which you have to drink before a colonoscopy.

MargotBamborough · 26/10/2023 18:58

Root beer. Yuck.

NorthCliffs · 26/10/2023 18:59

Milk of magnesia. Tastes like minty fish 🤢

campari 🤮

^ agree its absolutely disgusting

Newgolddream70 · 26/10/2023 19:03

Pernod. Makes me shudder

Garlic vodka. I made it myself but may have used a bit much garlic. Filled a bottle with peeled garlic, filled up with vodka nad left it for 6 months. After filtering it was green and oily and utterly foul.

Good Lord. What possessed you?? 🧛🏼‍♀️ 🧛🏻‍♂️

Cream Soda is also quite unpleasant. I don't know what it's created/concocted/bred from but it has no redeeming features. I live in West Yorkshire where dandelion and burdock is apparently a popular beverage to accompany fish and chips. I used to quite like D&B when I was a wee bairn but I couldn't drink it now and certainly not with fish and chips.

Coffee and tea revolt me.

Vinvertebrate · 26/10/2023 19:12

Isn’t cream soda made from coca cola and ice cream? I have vague memories of this rank combo at birthday parties in the old days.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/10/2023 19:12

I do love a drink but my list will sound like the very opposite

Aperol Spritz
Negronis
Pastis/ any aniseed liqueur
Newcastle brown Ale
Tequila
Bloody Marys
Cheap fizzy wine
Cheap red wine
Absinthe
Jaegermeister

That said I do love whiskey - the single malts that people say are too peaty and smoky or iodiney open up beautifully with the addition of 'the angels tear' ( a drop or two of water). It makes a huge difference.

Heartbreaktuna · 26/10/2023 19:15

Sazerac cocktail. Absinthe, whiskey, brandy.

User0000009 · 26/10/2023 19:16

Miso soup. Tastes like it’s been strained through a jockstrap

Gowlett · 26/10/2023 19:17

Redbull.

Sorefoot23 · 26/10/2023 19:17

Coffee. All coffee yuk!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/10/2023 19:18

Also - milky coffee, ( in fact any coffee that's not straight up black), any type of tea that's not builders, Mocha ( an abomination!), eggnog, snowballs...

...
I feel it would be easier to just list what I do like.
Champagne, good Prosecco, cava etc.
vodka
Gin
Midori (weirdly)
Rum but not the Wray and Nephew level which is like drinking petrol
Cinzano
Martini
Most white wine
Really good red wine
Orange rosé

And that's me done.

froufroulala · 26/10/2023 19:20

Barley wine, absolutely vile. Tastes like grass and piss.

ssd · 26/10/2023 19:23

Root beer...yuk

luckylavender · 26/10/2023 19:23

Last week I had Cinnamon Juice at breakfast in Crete. By God it was awful.

That’s a coke float. 🤮

Cream soda is vanilla flavoured fizzy stuff

Vinvertebrate · 26/10/2023 19:26

You’re right. Both absolutely grimbles @Jins

BethDuttonsTwin · 26/10/2023 19:29

Gin. The smell, the taste. Honestly feel nauseous just thinking about it.
