What is the worst-tasting drink you have ever had ?

I've had plenty of ropey glasses of water (chemicals, fluoride, iron) and off milk. But my all time champion is Greene King IPA, absolutely the most foul, disgusting beer I have drunk in 34 years of legal alcohol consumption. The one pint I managed to finish didn't taste remotely of beer, more like weak golden syrup with some unspeakable additives. Many years ago, I had a glass of Merlot which tasted like burning rubber. My guess is that it wasn't off but needed longer in the bottle to mature. Regardless, it was horrible.

My late parents were both fans of pastis drinks such as Pernod and Ouzo. Just the smell was enough to put me off. Eww.

Decades ago, I'm reliably informed that the ubiquitous Watney's Red Barrel was the gold standard for witchpiss in the brewing industry.

Matcha Latte.
Absolutely minging 🤢

MargaretThursday · 26/10/2023 19:33

Red Bull.
I was a student when they were looking for gullible people to try it. They were giving it away at lots of student events. The first one everyone, being a student, grabbed a can or two because they were free.
By the 2nd or 3rd event the reps were standing there begging people to take them as they could not give them away free.

If you can't give food/drink away free to students who have had quite a bit to drink then there's something seriously wrong with it.

I was astonished when they actually managed to persuade people to pay for it.

Wheatgrass juice. I moved to Notting Hill in the 90s and it was full of yoga-y organic juicing types with dewy skin and bouncy ponytails. I watched them all glugging it back at the local organic juice counter and thought 'this is obviously the cool thing to drink and maybe it'll give me great skin and bouncy hair'. So I ordered a shot, knocked it back and nearly vomited all over the nearest Sweaty Betty clad trustafarian.

I could taste it for weeks WEEKS I tell you!

I remember those days @Beangrove - I tried drinking wheatgrass to clear a hangover and it just made me violently sick (but also kind of worked) 🤔

NotRainbowRhythms · 26/10/2023 19:41

Aperol spritz 🤢

Aposterhasnoname · 26/10/2023 19:41

Vinegar and sugar, my grandmothers cure for coughs. You bet your ass we didn’t cough after a mouthful of that, we didn't dare, lest she made us drink more.

Chocolata82 · 26/10/2023 19:42

Pumpkin flavoured hot drinks.
Beetroot juice
Tomato juice
Vodka
Whisky
Tequila
Tonic water

glitterfinder · 26/10/2023 19:43

Aloe Vera juice. I did not know that there is supposed to be slimy bits in it.

Cream soda is vanilla flavoured fizzy stuff

Oh God, a coke float is my favourite drink...

The SHAME

Two come to mind. The tap water in Florida (Orlando area). It was so bad that we threw out the whole pot of coffee after one sip. Even the dog wouldn't drink that water. The other was some weird drink DS2 had me try. It wasn't Kombucha but something along that line. All I remember is that it tasted of vinegar, something 'fungus-y', with a dash of sugar and salt. Nasty!

As far as liquor, peanut butter whiskey is pretty bad.

Noseyoldcow · 26/10/2023 19:47

For the person who says that mango juice tastes like sweaty armpits.....how do you know what sweaty armpits taste like?

Somertime · 26/10/2023 19:48

Yak milk in Mongolia. It was in a visit to a nomad family and it's supposed to be a delicacy 🤢 Think rancid butter floating in rancid milk

Balsam - Latvian alcohol = Black bile flavour

Came here to say Riga Black Balsam. Fuck me that stuff is a whole new level of grim.

M&S say..
"Not just any coffee First it was all about the latte, then the flat white, and now… meet the Magic Coffee®. Having taken the world-famous Melbourne coffee scene by storm, Magic Coffee® is now a UK M&S Café exclusive. The secret to this perfect drink is the magic ratio of coffee to milk – a double ristretto is topped with velvety steamed milk and served in a short 6oz glass. The result? A perfectly balanced, less bitter, but uniquely flavoursome coffee."
"Uniquely flavoursome" indeed.

bombastix · 26/10/2023 20:05

Ok hard no to coffee with its own PR.

IceAndLemonPlease · 26/10/2023 20:09

Coffee, so bitter tasting.
Milk. Yuck.
Gin- Don’t understand how anyone could like this.

BebbanburgIsMine · 26/10/2023 20:16

Was coming on to say this .... disgusting 🤮

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/10/2023 20:22

Now I'm remembering some kind Thai spirit I brought back in the early 90s which was laced with formaldehyde? Jesus that stuff was lethal. And awful.

StrongBlackExpresso · 26/10/2023 13:24

Negroni. I had thought it would be fabulous but it was so strong and bitter I could only manage a couple of sips.

Yes me too! Since had one that was miles better.

TheTecknician · 26/10/2023 20:38

Evidently there are multiple lousy beverages out there so I'll take a moment to share some which aren't so bad.

Good quality Scotch and Irish whiskies, e.g. Johnny Walker, Black Bottle, Writer's Tears. I generally dislike American Bourbon and sour mash whisky.

1872 Porter. Weighing in at about 6% alcohol, this is a grown-up's beer.

Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich, smooth and flavourful.

Metaxa 5 and 7 star brandies. It's been years since I've had either but so smooth and drinkable.

Barium meal before an xray. Like drinking a mix of ground chalk and crafting glue with cornflour mixed in.

dynastyfan · 26/10/2023 20:41

Campari
Negronis

Both absolutely foul
