What is the worst-tasting drink you have ever had ?

I've had plenty of ropey glasses of water (chemicals, fluoride, iron) and off milk. But my all time champion is Greene King IPA, absolutely the most foul, disgusting beer I have drunk in 34 years of legal alcohol consumption. The one pint I managed to finish didn't taste remotely of beer, more like weak golden syrup with some unspeakable additives. Many years ago, I had a glass of Merlot which tasted like burning rubber. My guess is that it wasn't off but needed longer in the bottle to mature. Regardless, it was horrible.

My late parents were both fans of pastis drinks such as Pernod and Ouzo. Just the smell was enough to put me off. Eww.

Decades ago, I'm reliably informed that the ubiquitous Watney's Red Barrel was the gold standard for witchpiss in the brewing industry.

Mojitos. Why would anyone want a toothpaste flavoured drink??

That's a badly made mojito then! I know what you mean - I've made mistakes before and it tasted just like that - revolting!!

I went to a Chinese doctor when I was struggling to get pregnant with my eldest and was "prescribed" a tea made of a load of roots and bits of bark. You genuinely had to hold your nose to drink it and the boiling of it made the house smell like death. I can't describe the taste or smell, only that it was like you imagine ashes/fire would taste but mixed with dirt and maybe some elderly mushrooms.

I did get pregnant though! After a month of four times a day drinking that it was just as well frankly, as my husband was on the verge of leaving: not only did the house smell of it but it was coming out of my pores.

devildeepbluesea · 26/10/2023 17:48

Sliwowice- home made Czech plum brandy. Every house distils their own. It was like drinking petrol. Bloody effective though!!

Tequila (unless in a margarita, it’s fine then)

TotalOverhaul · 26/10/2023 17:50

An M&S ready mixed G&T was undrinkably disgusting. It tasted nothing like G or T. Also Goat soup. I just couldn't.

BunnyBunnyJabberJabber · 26/10/2023 17:50

Earl Grey tea = perfumed dish water.

yarnwitch · 26/10/2023 18:02

Tomato juice drink 🤮
Whisky - had one sip as a teenager, revolting.
G&T - tasted like some kind of pine disinfectant

crostini · 26/10/2023 18:10

Its a tie between a 'petrol bomb' or a 'shit bomb'.

Taketheplunge · 26/10/2023 18:14

That used to make me heave.

Youaresowelcome · 26/10/2023 18:17

Bacon schnapps. Was burping bacon for weeks. Can still taste it now 11 years later.

IvysMum12 · 26/10/2023 18:17

Limoncello.
Beyond disgusting.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 26/10/2023 18:18

Negroni
Aperol spritz
pernod
ouzo
All bleurrggghh!

GinJeanie · 26/10/2023 13:43

1970s orange squash with powdered worm medicine mixed in. I still remember 🤢

I came on to say 'Pripsen.' I still can't eat raspberry ripple ice cream and it's 44 years since.

Also didn't care for Aperol spritz.

mathanxiety · 26/10/2023 18:24

I didn't much care for green chartreuse, or Irn-Bru. However, the Chicago specialty called Malort was the absolute worst thing I have ever drunk.

mathanxiety · 26/10/2023 18:25

I also hate root beer.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 26/10/2023 18:25

Ah yes, pripsen, and more recently mixed berry flavour Gaviscon liquid, jeees, that stuff is vile.

Brexile · 26/10/2023 18:29

Not a drink as such, but Nuelin Syrup - a foul cough medicine from childhood. Also:

White wine in standard British pubs
Rum and Coke
Pastis
The smell of Red Bull, I haven't tasted it
Ricoré with milk
Anything with milk
Whisky

mathanxiety · 26/10/2023 18:33

I also remember dad giving us all spoonfuls of extract of malt as kids (bleurrrgh) and one time a spoonful of godawful stuff called Sloan's Liniment. Afterwards I felt so bad I read the label and discovered a liniment is supposed to be rubbed on externally, and it's not for internal use. I'm surprised we didn't end up getting our stomachs pumped. The burning!!!

Plus the drink before a colonoscopy. In the end I couldn't hold it down.

Libertass · 26/10/2023 18:35

Martini Bianco & lemonade (ask your mum) was pretty awful, but Carling Black Label gets my vote as the worst thing I have ever drunk. It has a genuinely unpleasant wet cardboard aroma and, despite being thin & weak, a nasty ‘off’ bitterness in the mouth. Just cut out the middleman & pour it straight down the bog. 🤮

I don’t dislike lager. Proper pilsner or helles style lagers are wonderful. My favourites include Staropramen (the real stuff from Prague), Augustiner Edelstoff from Munich or Rothaus Tannenzäpfle from the Black Forest. Carling is a travesty of everything these amazing beers represent.

Botanica · 26/10/2023 18:36

Yak butter tea. Starting to solidify on the top into a crust...

Memories of Baileys based cocktails that curdled into creamy clots...

Goat milk kefir...

Swishswish26 · 26/10/2023 18:38

Aperol!

TigerRag · 26/10/2023 18:38

Beck's blue

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 26/10/2023 18:40

Ginger beer
lady grey tea - tastes of lemon washing up liquid

nzborn · 26/10/2023 18:46

Anything alcoholic
