What is the worst-tasting drink you have ever had ?

I've had plenty of ropey glasses of water (chemicals, fluoride, iron) and off milk. But my all time champion is Greene King IPA, absolutely the most foul, disgusting beer I have drunk in 34 years of legal alcohol consumption. The one pint I managed to finish didn't taste remotely of beer, more like weak golden syrup with some unspeakable additives. Many years ago, I had a glass of Merlot which tasted like burning rubber. My guess is that it wasn't off but needed longer in the bottle to mature. Regardless, it was horrible.

My late parents were both fans of pastis drinks such as Pernod and Ouzo. Just the smell was enough to put me off. Eww.

Decades ago, I'm reliably informed that the ubiquitous Watney's Red Barrel was the gold standard for witchpiss in the brewing industry.

Coconut water. Holy feck, that stuff is awful.

You beat me to it. Couldn’t believe how horrible it was!

ladymactíre · 26/10/2023 14:34

Coffee with oat milk. Threw it away and tasted the oat milk by itself, I don't know why. Vile!
Linie Aquavit - caraway and aniseed together

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 26/10/2023 14:34

Another vote for Pripsen.

I was disappointed with the Aperol Spritz I tried. I also had a martini once that was very reminiscent of nail varnish remover.

Calvados.

Kombucha

DD and I tried some of my DMs from the fridge and we both immediately spat it out

It was rank

I don't like Ouzo, Sambucca or Pernod. All those aniseed flavours are not a delight to my tastebuds

readbooksdrinktea · 26/10/2023 14:35

Lemsip. Ugh.
Coffee.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 26/10/2023 14:36

Oh, and if someone ever offers you durian fruit wine. Don’t. Just don’t.

CanadianJohn · 26/10/2023 14:37

Castor oil.

Many years ago I was in hospital, had to have a lower bowel procedure, and had to drink castor oil. "It's easier if you chug it down." said the nurse, so I did. And promptly threw up. So I had to drink a second dose, and fortunately kept it down.

Over 30 years ago, and I still shudder at the taste.

MrsMitford3 · 26/10/2023 14:37

I was at a whisky tasting that was bought for DH as a birthday gift and I do actually like whisky. One of the peaty ones tasted exactly like TCP.

And anything that tastes like aniseed.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2023 14:37

Another vote for the nastiest of Lapsang Souchon. My now DH and I tried it once many years ago when we were students. Apart from tasting vile, he came out in hives so we ended up walking miles to try to find a late night chemists. Never again!

Responsibilityisyours · 26/10/2023 14:38

Cider. It is the only drink I can't finish.

BigGapMum · 26/10/2023 14:38

Spa water from the Roman Baths, at Bath.

PauliesWalnuts · 26/10/2023 14:40

For me it’s tea, coffee, milk or any kind of beer. I’m a very fussy drinker. Love aniseed drinks though, and Vimto flows through my veins!

Honestmary · 26/10/2023 14:41

@GinJeanie @endlessfall

Pripson, that’s the vile stuff, we always had raspberry and I still can’t eat or smell anything remotely raspberry flavoured without feeling sick. Even the thought of those gritty bits in my mouth makes me gip

isitsmallorfaraway · 26/10/2023 14:41

Fresh papaya juice. Vomit in a glass Envy

CoconutRun · 26/10/2023 14:42

Wine in general. Tastes like toxic chemicals to me.

coxesorangepippin · 26/10/2023 14:42

Pastis, ouzo group of liquid

A guy I knew once was sick on his car bonnet after drinking too much pastis and the paint had melted off the car the morning after

JollyJellyCat · 26/10/2023 14:42

Cynar

I like artichokes so thought artichoke liqueur was worth a try. It was vile. We got all visitors to try it as "the worst thing you've ever tasted". Everyone agreed. The bottle lasted about 10 years but we did finish it eventually!

All2Well · 26/10/2023 14:47

Ok, I'm now downgrading Beverly.

  1. Puh-er tea (spent £100 on buying it from the Chinese Herbalist it to cure teenage acne and could only drink it once)
  2. Pripsen (which I couldn't keep down. The only thing worse than drinking it is puking it)
  3. Beverly (can't actually describe it but apparently it's made from grapefruit rind extract).

Also spent a fortune on Noni Extract Juice before Noni became a euphemism for the vagina. It tasted like a mix of everything in the bottom of a fridge.

orangegato · 26/10/2023 14:48

Grappa. Evil evil liquid.

Ineedwinenow · 26/10/2023 14:48

Another vote here for Negroni or Campari! Both absolutely vile, both taste like how I imagine my car’s windscreen washer fluid or white spirits would taste!

Missedmytoe · 26/10/2023 14:49

WhatHaveIDoneNo3 · 26/10/2023 13:26

Aperol spritz 🤢

I tried that in the summer because I had a voucher to get one free. No way would I have paid money for it. Awful. Looked like IrnBru, and just tasted horrible.

PurpleChrayne · 26/10/2023 14:50

When living in China I consumed some pretty rank stuff all told, but the worst was the "bone tea" I accidentally ordered. I thought the thing floating in it was a peach stone, until halfway through when my chinese friend asked me if I was going to "suck the joint" of its meat... 😖

Tellmeallthestories · 26/10/2023 14:50

Coconut water.

I have also been offered cow colostrum but declined.

Ittastesvile · 26/10/2023 14:51

Gin mojito. Id asked for a virgin mojito and the waitress misheard me. A gin mojito a) wasn't on the menu and b) is not a thing!!!!!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 26/10/2023 14:52

Yes, M&S magic coffee. Magic vomit potion.
