What is the worst-tasting drink you have ever had ?

I've had plenty of ropey glasses of water (chemicals, fluoride, iron) and off milk. But my all time champion is Greene King IPA, absolutely the most foul, disgusting beer I have drunk in 34 years of legal alcohol consumption. The one pint I managed to finish didn't taste remotely of beer, more like weak golden syrup with some unspeakable additives. Many years ago, I had a glass of Merlot which tasted like burning rubber. My guess is that it wasn't off but needed longer in the bottle to mature. Regardless, it was horrible.

My late parents were both fans of pastis drinks such as Pernod and Ouzo. Just the smell was enough to put me off. Eww.

Decades ago, I'm reliably informed that the ubiquitous Watney's Red Barrel was the gold standard for witchpiss in the brewing industry.

Tea made from tap water in East Anglia. Had to drink this while visiting the PILs. Practically had to crack the scum on top with a spoon to get to the tea. This was many years ago - don't know if East Anglian water has improved.

The milk in little glass bottles we got free in primary school. I liked milk as a child but the teacher used to keep it beside the radiator in winter - it always tasted a bit off.

aftershock from the late 90's
Grappa
Ouzo
A bloody Caesar - like a bloody Mary which is already vile, but with added clam juice!

Yes, M&S magic coffee. Magic vomit potion.

I'm curious about what is said to be "magic" about it

I agree with so many of them particularly the aniseed flavored drinks and fruit tea. ( or any tea in fact )

Smurfmurf · 26/10/2023 15:02

Milk
or
Buckfast

Justletpeopleenjoythings · 26/10/2023 15:03

Liquid prozac, it made me retch.

FartSock5000 · 26/10/2023 15:06

Glendronach Single Malt 20yo.

Tasted like drain cleaner. I have had a lot of drams of fine, aged whiskies but never has anything tasted like chemicals before. Absolute rank.

I also cannot stomach creamy/milky drinks like Tequila Rose. Boak!

2catsandhappy · 26/10/2023 15:10

Vodka and cider. My 18th. We ran out of mixers and it seemed like a good idea.

Katherineryan · 26/10/2023 15:12

Coconut water - ugh, absolutely disgusting

An artisan raspberry IPA - I can’t describe how awful that was, but the can was pretty 😁

A margarita on holiday where the salt had gone into the drink - it was like drinking sea water - obviously I sent it back, the waitress asked me if she could taste it - oh the face she pulled - she agreed with me and got me a fresh one

Cherry coke
Lager and black
Fruit teas

There is a theme here.

Glittertwins · 26/10/2023 15:31

Fruit tea is very disappointing, whoever said it was like a compost bin isn't wrong!
Add to the list - campari, negroni, aperol, any beer/lager and very sweet white wine

Ketzele · 26/10/2023 15:34

Guinness is foul. My (lifetime alcoholic and deadbeat) father has an 'interesting' theory about it. He reckons the feckin Brits have been poisoning it for years to keep the Irish down, and that he's been fine since he switched to spirits.

Whisky, sherry and port also a hard no.

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 26/10/2023 15:35

Ouzo, Avocaat, Pernot, Dubonnet, were all horrible.

Whengodwasarabbit · 26/10/2023 15:41

Butter beer truly awful

Caswallonthefox · 26/10/2023 15:42

I would say port, but never got beyond the smell, so never tasted it. Gin, whiskey and brandy all taste disgusting. It depends on the drink, some wines, some non alcoholic drinks. Tried red bull, never again. Anything with cherry in it except panda pop.

ReverseFerret · 26/10/2023 15:43

Laxido... orange flavour

GigiAnnna · 26/10/2023 15:45

Goat milk. Smelt like rancid animal urine.

Chonkadoodle · 26/10/2023 15:47

To me coconut water tastes like sperm.

Hellokittymania · 26/10/2023 15:47

Are used to live in Vietnam, and at one of the local markets, they had green beans soda in a plastic bag with a straw, it was disgusting. They didn’t have Coca-Cola, and they told me that one tasted similar. It didn’t. Not by mile. I wish I had chosen soy milk. If you have ever been to places like Thailand, or Vietnam, you know about the drinks in the bag with a straw… They are something I really miss nowadays.

WhiskersPete · 26/10/2023 15:49

Fizzy water. The Devil's own juice.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 26/10/2023 15:54

Dr Pepper. Tastes like germaline.

Peskysquirrel · 26/10/2023 15:55

Fernet Branca. Oh my god. Literally the worst tasting drink ever. Looks like tar.
Riga Black Balsam.
Jägermeister. Bizarre that this is marketed as a trendy drink nowadays.

OutOfSyncWithReality · 26/10/2023 15:59

Amarula or Southern Comfort

DahliaMacNamara · 26/10/2023 16:02

If we're including medicinals, I'm putting in a bid for kaolin and morphine. My childhood was haunted by the fear of having to drink this appalling concoction.

Otherwise, I can take your smoky whiskies and choke down fruit teas, but I cannot abide sparkling water. I love a really cold glass of still water, and I'm a big fan of fizzy drinks too. But sparkling water is so wrong, I can't touch the stuff. It's like something you might drink as a hangover cure, if you could keep it down long enough.

GinJeanie · 26/10/2023 16:02

@endlessfall @Honestmary - it really is that appalling isn't it?
I only had it once in the late 70s and I'd probably cry if someone made me go again. I remember ours was "raspberry" too.
