Do we actually know who bombed the hospital in Gaza yet?

I keep seeing mixed reports. It’s really unsettling not to know.

In the meantime, the US has gone ahead and vetoed a resolution in the UN security council that - after much negotiation and watering down of language - demanded "humanitarian pauses".

And, yes, this - in combination with Biden saying what he did - will be understood by both Israelis and Palestinians as "carte blanche", make no mistake!

EvelynKatie · 18/10/2023 15:45

Hopefully people don't get too riled up on this thread and we can just have a reasonable discussion. No one wants innocent people being killed like this, and with so much news flying around it's important to able to discuss what's happening.

However it happened we can surely agree there still is a huge problem treating the people injured due to the aid blockade.

"KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Doctors hamstrung by dwindling medical supplies rushed Wednesday to save people badly wounded in a massive blast at a Gaza City hospital the day before, performing surgery – often without anesthesia – on patients lying on floors, as Israel kept up its attacks on the besieged territory."

"Ghassan Abu Sitta, a plastic surgeon working at al-Alhi, said he heard a loud explosion and the ceiling of his operating room collapsed.
“The wounded started stumbling toward us,” he wrote in an account posted to Facebook. He saw hundreds of dead and severely wounded people. “I put a tourniquet on the thigh of a man who had his leg blown off and then went to tend to a man with a penetrating neck injury.”
Video that The Associated Press confirmed was from the hospital showed the hospital grounds strewn with torn bodies, many of them young children, as fire engulfed the building. On Wednesday morning the blast scene was littered with charred cars and the ground was blackened by debris."

This - and as well as the hospital, continued IDF bombardment of residential areas, the lack of clean water, bombing of the largest bakery in Gaza and lack of a humanitarian corridor will kill people

Iamacatslave · 18/10/2023 15:49

Why didn’t Biden ask Israel to de-escalate their attacks?

MajesticWhine · 18/10/2023 15:50

Luckydip1 · 18/10/2023 15:44

So Isreal warns they are going to bomb the hospital in Gaza so evacuate it, bombs the hospital and then refuses aid, all with Joe Biden saying great job Israel, keep doing what you're doing.

What evidence is there that Israel bombed the hospital? Why are you propagating this? Are you interested in facts?

EvelynKatie · 18/10/2023 15:51

If Israel stop their attacks, will Hamas also stop and release the hostages back? Why aren't all countries calling for a ceasefire?

Divinespark · 18/10/2023 15:53

PenOfTentacles · 18/10/2023 13:24

Independent verification could take a long time but Reuters have reported that Biden says it is likely Hamas or other ‘foes’ of Israel.

https://www.reuters.com/world/biden-heads-middle-east-inflamed-by-gaza-hospital-blast-2023-10-18/

Must be true then right

Luckydip1 · 18/10/2023 15:57

Because Israel warned they were going to attack the hospital and now they have done what they actually said they were going to do. There is nothing complicated about it.

MajesticWhine · 18/10/2023 16:01

Independent sources are suggesting it was not an Israeli bomb but Luckydip1 of mumsnet knows better. Why so certain? Or are you biased?

Subtlety1985 · 18/10/2023 16:01

WanderingWitches · 18/10/2023 15:22

The BBC?
They sent out push notifications to people's phone last night saying that the Israelis dropped a bomb on the hospital, based on the words of Hamas alone.

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy was being sarcastic, surely?!

Coyoacan · 18/10/2023 16:05

NotSuchASmugMarried · 18/10/2023 13:21

It's likely hamas. Russia does similar . There is no military advantage to Israel to destroy a hospital.

There is no war between one side that has an army and another side that doesn't. This is not about military advantages, it's about collective punishment

Angrycat2768 · 18/10/2023 16:05

I dont think we will ever know the truth. Independent verification will never be believed from one side ir the other. If the BBC verify it will be ' BBC bias or Western bias'. That goes for any other country that goes into verify what went on. They will be accused of a cover up from one side or the other. There is audio etc but who know whether that is faked or not? Both sides have been known to lie. If we look at who benefitted, Biden has not been able to meet Jordanian and Egypitian Oredidents as plsnned because of it. I dont know who would want to prevent that more. Hamas started this, but IDF are playing into their hands. This is what they wanted to happen and Israel have obliged. Hamas couldn't care less about Palestinians. Just as their sister organisations don't care about Muslim civilians they kill in Egypt, Jordan, Nigeria, Sudan, Afghanistan, Iran and the rest. They and their families are safe in Qatar.

EvelynKatie · 18/10/2023 16:05

@Luckydip1 I don't think anyone can be absolutely certain who bombed the hospital car park.

immigrant002 · 18/10/2023 16:06

crumblingschools · 18/10/2023 13:26

Doesn't Biden support Israel so not sure his thoughts on the matter are not biased

We have investigated ourselves and we clear ourselves of any wrongdoing Hmm

Lottie2shoes · 18/10/2023 16:08

Independent sources have also said it is not Hamas or PIJ or other.

I honestly do not know which side to believe but if Israel have already threatened several times and then it has happened, I can see why people will believe it was then.
There is alot of cover up on both sides so it would not be far fetched to me to hear that Israel denies it now.
Likewise it could be one of the above. Either way my heart bleeds for all the civilians who died especially when they came back to the hospital due to other bombings, thinking it was lesser of the 2 evils.
Must be so hard trying to protect yourself and others, hoping you will stay alive.
Shame on all the cold hearted people, I really hope Karma bites them on the a** triplefold, for all the terror they have caused, whichever side it is

EvelynKatie · 18/10/2023 16:10

What do all the countries in the world expect Israel to do following the attack Hamas did? Obviously the answer is absolutely not to bomb innocent civilians, and this needs to stop. But how do Israel get their hostages back, alive, and also seek out the terrorists who killed all those innocent people?

PenOfTentacles · 18/10/2023 16:11

The BBC is far from supportive of Israel, in fact their coverage leaned so much the other way, especially at first, that at least one of their Jewish reporters (Noah Abrahams) has resigned so far.

Livelovebehappy · 18/10/2023 16:13

EvelynKatie · 18/10/2023 15:51

Of course not. Hamas would see it as weakness, crawl out from under their stones, and continue with what they started. You can’t debate rationally with terrorists, and nor should we. Absolute nightmare for Israel to navigate this. They’re trying to rescue their hostages (those that are still alive, I’m doubtful there’ll be any), and eradicate the threat to their people - Hamas, and at the same time trying not to bring the wrath of the Palestinian sympathisers upon their heads, who will try to get onboard the sympathies of countries to stop Israel doing anything if they could pin this recent bombing on them.

@Livelovebehappy That's what I thought, it sounds like a difficult situation for Israel. I'm really concerned about those poor hostages too, as well as all civilians now in the firing line. If Hamas actually confirmed they were sadly no longer alive, I wonder if Israel would stop their attack?

Not by bombing the places they're in. There's horrific scenes of the families of hostages being attacked by their fellow Israelis as they're so incensed with the government - their slowness to respond, the failure of the intelligence, and their continued bombardment and escalation

Maybe if Israel withdrew from all the Palestinian land they have illegally settled on over the decades, and then defended by force, there would be scope for a fair settlement.

EvelynKatie · 18/10/2023 16:22

@DoDoDoD I was thinking, what if the Israeli bombings end up killing their own hostages. Or, Hamas have killed them and then state it was because of an Israeli bombing.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 18/10/2023 16:23

If Hamas (or other terrorists in the region) have weapons that have the capability to do that much damage, why have we never seen anything of that magnitude reported by Israel as having been done to them?

Biden is voicing an opinion. He knows no more than anyone else at this point. He is pro-Israel, and you watch, nothing else will happen while he’s there. You can hear the jets on their bombing runs, then a huge bang and the explosion. I’m pretty sure Hamas don’t have jets.

interestingly, no webcams are streaming Gaza city any more.
