🤷🏻‍♀️ not sure of your point but of course I agree.
Parts of
the database are open source so knock yourself out, unless you combine it with other critical information it’s just a list of chemicals and numbers which wouldn’t mean anything to anyone outside my team.

I could change my title tomorrow to “grand poobah of poisons” no one cares, my point was, boring job. Excel spreadsheet. Possibly interesting title.

Lord of the Dance

My dh is a commercial pilot, a captain. Honestly when pilots get together all they talk about is flying and the boring tech bits. What’s the difference between God and a pilot? God doesn’t think he’s a pilot!😛

The King's Assay Master, never heard a job title to beat that.

likethislikethat · 15/10/2023 18:49

I guess it depends on what was normal in your life.

In my youth, I knew of nothing more than a head teacher, a doctor, the Prime Minister, etc.

In my business life I was an investment banker as were most of my friends. Non banking friends were lawyers, accountants, other professionals etc.

Now in business, I see far more from top to bottom.

I think special forces must be up there. Risking your life voluntarily to help others. Not sure anything comes higher than that really.

The Queen/King's Warden of the Swans has got to be right up there.

Landed wealth will often be attracted to the services - normally the Army. It is a meritocracy now though and I think it’s been that way for a long time. Though I would add that once in a senior rank it is rare to get demoted even for non-performance.

I know a couple of retired officers who, despite a long service, never got past captain and I can see why. I knew a Second Sea Lord who came from an ordinary background, but was exceptionally bright, quiet, measured and made decisions that proved to be turning points. Never flash, always understated but focused on the whole agenda. At weekends he spent time in the garden, fixing stuff in the house and reading books from WH Smith. If someone from the village popped by he would just put everything down and make them a cup of tea.

Edited

The Royal Navy has always been more of a meritocracy than the Army - I knew of an admiral who had risen up through the ranks. The Army has posh regiments where there is still a degree of 'who you know' - particularly in the infantry and armoured corps - much less so with the technical and service support regiments. And certain senior posts can only be filled by those who have served in particular regiments.

Astrophysicist or hitman.

CarpetLady · 15/10/2023 19:12

I know lots of barristers and some of them are complete wallies so that doesn’t do it for me.

Any sort of surgeon is impressive. I also respect artists, singers and actors for having the courage to do something creative and risky rather than taking the easy route.

Onthelastdayofseptember · 15/10/2023 19:18

Fighter pilot (though knew one once who never seemed very bright)
Spy
Ambassador
Minister/ high up in government
Agree surgeons sound impressive
SAS
Astronaut/ NASA jobs

Lots more j0bs would be interesting to talk to people about - guess unusual ones like eg sailors, foreign correspondents, sportspeople etc

I just describe myself as a former soldier. When pressed, I do give my rank which was fairly senior. People say "Wow! Did everyone call you Ma'am? You must have been really important."
"Well, I was addressed as Ma'am but I much preferred being called by my rank and name. My soldiers just called me 'boss' which I was much more comfortable with." Goodness knows why people are so impressed. I was just a soldier doing a job.

I was with you until you wrote "My soldiers"

OK. The soldiers who were working for me at the time then. It's quite normal to talk about 'my squadron, my troop commander or even my soldiers', it's not in a possessive sense.
