Just for sat night chat, what job do you think holds the biggest kudos? I think probably a medical consultant or barrister... what do you think...

City financiers?
Stockbrokers ?

WheekWheekWheek · 15/10/2023 23:32

For me the coolest job on earth would be Professional Guinea Pig Whisperer

woofwoofandwoof · 15/10/2023 22:12

why - is it the first thing they tell everyone 😂 ‘Hello, I’m a Pilot and my name’s Bob…’

that reminds me of that old joke that fits almost all of these professions...

How can you tell if someone has a pilot's licence?
They'll tell you

How can you tell if someone is a surgeon?
They'll tell you.

How can you tell if someone is a barrister?
They'll tell you.

Definitely not true of criminal barristers, because they will be trying to avoid the old ‘something I’ve always wanted to know…’ questions. Which is always ‘what do you do/how do you cope when you know they’re guilty?’ Funnily enough it’s never ‘what do you do when you’re prosecuting and you know they’re innocent?’

Makingalivingfromthat · 15/10/2023 23:40

Wing commander is far more impressive sounding than the higher rank of Group Captain.

TmFid · 15/10/2023 23:47

Used to think “human rights lawyer,” then I heard the words of Keir Starmer supporting genocide and war crimes and swiftly changed my mind.

i recommend the films

Margin call
The big short
for perspectives in that areas

My GP was in intelligence at GCHQ. She was bored and started studying medicine when she was over forty.
One of two actual geniuses I have met.

it can be quite varied at Gchq, "the doughnut"

WheekWheekWheek · 15/10/2023 23:52

@Dedsec2023 thanks for the film recommendations . I do enjoy a good film.

they are quite good, i liked the big short better but both seem quite realistic

Dedsec2023 · 15/10/2023 23:55

one does wonder about the knowledge of bob lazar

Blaidd · 16/10/2023 00:55

Absolutely. But she was recruited from Cambridge where she achieved a Double First. She wasn't doing clerical work at The Doughnut. I believe she was a codebreaker. Apart from having a big brain, she has a huge heart. Jx

Flippingnora100 · 16/10/2023 01:09

For me:
Anything that takes serious brains and hard work

Anything that involves trying to make the world a better place

MillieVonPinkle · 14/10/2023 20:37

I think it's probably dependent on you too.

I've met/known several barristers so it doesn't really strike me as a big deal anymore. Same with senior bankers, up to Exec level. (I'm neither BTW, not even close so not a stealth boast 😂)

I think I'd be automatically impressed if someone said they were a commercial pilot though. I've never met a pilot, I'd be very interested.

I agree, I've met some top barristers who are remarkable people, but also some who are just aggressively argumentative twats.

Freckles65 · 16/10/2023 09:11

I think any job title that involves saving people's lives on a daily basis especially if they're risking their own life in the process.

FartNRoses · 16/10/2023 09:18

Stuntman / Stuntwoman
Body Double

Fosterliz · 16/10/2023 10:56

Hi Lovely. My son is a pilot. The reason I’m so proud of him is that when he was younger he never went to school. He found it boring. The teachers had written him off. Said he’d never amount to much. He became self employed as no one would employ him without good exam results. He started tinting car windows. His business did well and he started training to fly planes.
The reason I’m so proud of him is that despite having no education and being brought up on a council estate by a single mum, he’s succeeded in his chosen career. He worked hard for ten years to achieve his dream.

Fifireee · 16/10/2023 11:00

All these teachers who say to children and their parents that they will never amount to much…..! So many. It’s astounding. They literally said it to the child and to the parent. All those teachers with a desire to be sacked and or punched in the face.
Astounding.

Emma1todge · 16/10/2023 11:01

Stay at home mum should be the biggest wow

Nope. all barristers are keen to tell you they are barristers if they are socialising with non-barristers. It's exactly like that sketch with the brain surgeons.

The 'how can you defend someone when you are guilty' gets asked of all lawyers all the time. It makes no difference because the ego driver makes them want to tell everyone they are barristers/surgeons/pilots etc

All barristers including me? 😄. I avoid it, which you should be able to tell from my post.

WoosMama13 · 16/10/2023 13:20

Absolutely tongue in cheek lovely!
One of the worst "jobs" out there. Might be out of touch, but I don't get it.
I understand "do what makes you happy." I think it really does generations before us a disservice and teaches children that you don't really need to use your brain to achieve in life. Surely most are finite in poularity, based on age, topic, etc, so they need a qualification or skill after that once their status fades.

WoosMama13 · 16/10/2023 13:24

@Nowherenew I replied, but it didn't appear to tag you and quote.

yep

why? That's not a job.

Lattims83 · 16/10/2023 13:48

I agree with astronaut and doctor. My best friend works for JPL and her bf is a physicist at NASA, he is probably my most impressive friend IMO. I don't agree with barrister but that's just based on my experience with barristers in the UK, they certainly haven't impressed me in any way.
