Just for sat night chat, what job do you think holds the biggest kudos? I think probably a medical consultant or barrister... what do you think...

Has someone mentioned Anne in Motherland -she was something like International Marketing Officer for Glaxo Smith Kline …..

Barometer · 15/10/2023 14:28

Unless someone is in a clearly structured and hierarchical profession (medicine, law, military etc.) job titles don't really mean much at all. Particularly in the corporate world.

Edited

and even then if the various corporate secrets etc are compartmentalized for deniability etc, even the top bosses may not always know whos' running which operations etc.

I was at a food/beverage/hospitality expo event and was talking to a man from a cake company who was wearing a badge with his name and job title on. I thought it was one of the best job titles I’ve ever seen!

Director of Sponge

maybe not as impressive as some but cool nonetheless

Floopyfloop · 15/10/2023 16:18

I’m a Graphic Designer and people always seem to think my job is way cooler than I actually am!

That revelation made me laugh so hard! Completely out of the blue, so clever.

It was brilliant. Did she think she worked in Greggs or something?

I have a very watered down version of this, for some reason everyone thinks I’m a nurse (a fine profession) when I’m head of intelligence for an international toxicology database. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Comebacksoon · 15/10/2023 16:45

Head of intelligence for an international toxicology database is very cool and I'd want to chat to you at the party!

I'm a professor and I find it to be a really cool job!

Yeah. That’s it. It’s very boring IRL but I know it has a huge impact on public health and people’s lives. Think excel spreadsheet in an aging fur coat, internet misinformation and disinformation, and a whole cast of luddites who take 6 weeks to reply to an email.

@Dedsec2023 unfortunately there’s no chance of any of us ever seeing that data base!!

I actually have no idea how it interfaces with the user! I think it’s an expensive subscription with different layers of urgency. It should be centrally funded, UNIAEA style but that’s not how it works. It feeds into national databases which have hotlines for actual emergency issues. Medical as well as environmental and other.

Some of our information gathering techniques are “secret” but I will say, Ukraine and Israel/Palestine have been really interesting to see play out when mapped against other information.

An example which is literally from a textbook (so not giving away anything!!) is… a spike in country A’s fish (gill breathing organisms generally) death or disease could be due to increased aluminium in the water supply. What are they using more aluminium for? Vaccines? Or aeroplanes? If it’s vaccines, is it Tick Borne Encephalitis? Or Rabies? They might (might) indicate that the country is planning some sort of wide scale expedition to a country with endemic TBE or Rabies. So that’s a really good indication (along with acres of other info) of a country’s intent. If it’s aeroplanes, who’s making them? Who’s invested in them? Do they need to import parts? If so, where from and what is their end user legislation like?

Toxicology is a tiny part of a big intelligence picture and because of the global nature of life, it’s hard to hide changes in health or productivity etc. not impossible tho.

which would then feed into military and espionage intelligence by different chemical's and other substances effecting the local wildlife in that region then cross referencing what those chemicals can be used for , then consider what events are happening in the region, to then give possible strategic information on what is being manufactured in secret etc

Precisely. I understand what I feed into but I have no idea of the real big picture. It’s only when it gets pulled together in the news that I go, oh yeah Makes perfect sense. Tiny cog, big machine. My work search history makes me look utterly deranged though!!

Lavenderosa · 15/10/2023 17:40

Garter King of Arms is an impressive title but below him is the best title of all I think: Rouge Dragon Pursuivant.

@Worriedmum159 I can’t imagine my job if your data base was leaked.
The reality is, job titles don’t matter we all have important roles.
