Just for sat night chat, what job do you think holds the biggest kudos? I think probably a medical consultant or barrister... what do you think...

High ranking in the military. National and regional directors of public organisations such as civil service, NHS etc. Until covid much of the public had never heard of the people who stood next to the prime minister during the daily briefings. Working for NASA. Working in genetics.

Pootles34 · 14/10/2023 20:33

Sea lord is a good one.

Barrister
Senior diplomat
Accomplished research scientists
Professors

Not sure consultant holds the same kudos it used to.

Esgaroth · 14/10/2023 20:36

Astronaut

MillieVonPinkle · 14/10/2023 20:37

I think it's probably dependent on you too.

I've met/known several barristers so it doesn't really strike me as a big deal anymore. Same with senior bankers, up to Exec level. (I'm neither BTW, not even close so not a stealth boast 😂)

I think I'd be automatically impressed if someone said they were a commercial pilot though. I've never met a pilot, I'd be very interested.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 14/10/2023 20:39

I worked for a company that had a National Engineer #goals

zeddybrek · 14/10/2023 20:42

CEO
CFO
Chief anything especially if it's a FTSE company.
Pilot
Partner of a magic circle law firm or Big Four Accountants
Working for the UN
Investment Banker.
Hedge Fund Partner.
Head of Beauty at Harrods, Harvey Nichols or Selfridges.

Medical Consultants and Barristers not so much anymore.

But Sea Lord trumps all the above.

Pollyannaatemyjelly · 14/10/2023 20:44

Fighter pilot
Professional athlete
Michelin starred chef
Astronaut
Professor

roastytoastysnowballs · 14/10/2023 20:46

DH and I were discussing this earlier

DS wants to be a geophysicist and we decided that no one would know what that is

DD is obsessed with airplanes and we reckon we've a future pilot in the making

I just want my children to be happy. DH and I both have "professional" titles - but I reckon surgeon and judge sound the best 👏🏼

JMAngel1 · 14/10/2023 20:46

Astrophysicist. I would be in awe and would have absolutely nothing to say to them😂

MichelleScarn · 14/10/2023 20:48

Transponster or in my work discharge coordinator!

Lovelyweatheragain · 14/10/2023 20:48

I’m always impressed by a psychiatrist. Also agree the poster who said Judge! And definitely astronaut. I’m now off to google Sea Lord….

muddyford · 14/10/2023 20:50

Commandant General Royal Marines.

CesareBorgia · 14/10/2023 20:50

Ambassador

Parakeetamol · 14/10/2023 20:50

Nursery key worker. Anyone who can put up with 40 slimy toddlers for 10 hours a day is a truly impressive person.

Notsuchacleverclogs · 14/10/2023 20:50

It depends, @pancakeontoast - are you talking about jobs or job titles? Because there are lots of very impressive jobs with not that impressive job titles. But im a civil servant and often come across some really exciting job titles, that are actually quite routine jobs. For instance, i once met someone with the job title "Head of Space". In fact, the job was a kind of trade promotion type job for satellite and related industries and didn't involve ruling over vast swathes of the cosmos 😅

IrmaBunt · 14/10/2023 20:51

Astronomer Royal.

Poet Laureat

SerCrispin · 14/10/2023 20:52

I think anyone who builds code for IBM, for example or who writes algorithms.

Barrister I'm still impressed by.

Anything "Chief Exec" or "Director of"

To be honest I'm not really sure, I suppose anything that initially sounds impressive I suppose. Something that automatically demands respect/ recognition
