I appologise in advance if I'm posting this in wrong place. I hoping I can get some advice.

I just had a tesco delivery, when I was taking food in to house my son was helping me, he suddenly noticed there was a cat inside delivery van where customers food is stored and it was walking all over another customers food.

We told the delivery driver and pointed out the cat, at first he didn't seem that bothered even joked that it happens often. Eventually he slowly walked back to van and instead of trying to get cat out quickly, he tried to stroke it, cat eventually jumped out and ran away.

I'm pretty sure it didn't get near my food but feel sorry for the other customers who have no idea a cat has walked all over there food.

Should I contact Tesco's and say something or just leave it.

What would you do.

Ok but you realise someone has probably lost their cat now? Their cat has probably hopped in the Tesco van elsewhere and hopped back out possibly at a whole different place. Could be miles away :(

The OP said she knew the cat… so obviously the cat was local to her street/area. It jumped in the van while he was delivery her order and then he got it out the van, so it hasn’t been moved from anywhere else nor was it driven away to somewhere new.

Owl55 · 15/10/2023 20:09

Yes the van driver should have washed everything in his van , dried it and delivered it to his customers! Seriously what would you expect him to do , all kinds of insects and rodent prob walk over food products in the warehouses .

Olderbutt · 15/10/2023 20:14

Yes, but you won't get the said cat delivered with your shopping will you?

I once saw a post on a local Facebook group asking if anyone knew our local Virgin Media installer, as her cat had been checking out his van, and had then gone missing, so she was concerned he'd stowed away. So that can happen.

That's what I'd be more worried about. I've done stock takes in supermarkets so I've seen their warehouses...

I too, would attempt to stroke the cat Grin

Fuck sake OP

you need to take a good hard look at your post: it’s bat shit crazy

no wonder you’re getting these responses

Fluffmum · 15/10/2023 21:00

I never made this post just to be insulted. I thought mumsnet was better than than this.

I'm sorry if my question was obviously stupid. I'm not hanging around here to be insulted any more by a pack of bullys.

You have clearly all made your mind up that I'm stupid.

I'm done.

You've not been here long if you thought MN was better than this. It's often far, far worse

These days food delivered isnt put in shopping bags it's put loose in to crates. That's why I was concerned. None of my shopping was in bags .

I thought maybe I was over thinking it but what if the cat had wee all over the food.

I know the cat he is a bit of a menace.just thought it was unhygienic.

I use to shelf stack in Tesco so many birds flying around/ living in the back.

Nowherenew · 15/10/2023 18:46

You are correct that cats can carry diseases and parasites but so can the rats and mice that are in the factories and warehouses where the food is stored (and the cats that hunt them).

Let’s not also forget the pickers and packers who may not wash their hands.

Yes - the point isn't disagreement about cats being unhygienic. It's that NOTHING that has gone through the entire supply chain is.
If it was a catering van fair enough but supermarket delivery? no.

Personally I’d advise Tesco cats poo carries the risk of toxoplasmosis which is extremely dangerous to pregnant women & extremely unpleasant for anyone getting it; cat urine even from a female has a very unpleasant odour it’s just a nasty thought isn’t it & cats aren’t very clean animals they scavenge through bins; dig in soil to go to the loo etc it’s not helpful the driver being so blaze about it he really should be closing the door as soon as he has removed each delivery; you don’t need the abuse you’ve received either you actually had a very valid & interesting point.

I’m no expert, but had always understood cats to be considered relatively clean in their habits. Certainly they can be no more dirty than many, many humans, and they ( humans) are the ones handling food! If cats were really that much of a risk, millions of cat owners who live in close contact with cats would be getting ill!

Elfblossom · 15/10/2023 23:27

I've lost count of how many times I've seen men with their hands down their trousers then out they come to pick up and put down things in shops ... rather the cat thanks!

We don't live in a sanitary bubble ... every item in your delivery and anyone else's has been touched and handled by dozens of people or more.

Don't start thinking about it!

T1Dmama · 15/10/2023 23:37

And rats run all over it and piss on it in the warehouse. I wouldn’t worry about cats.

AmberMcAmber · 16/10/2023 09:01

Probably not. Many people are opting not to have their shopping put into bags and then also choosing non-bagged produce (eg fresh broccoli instead of wrapped) so it could be that a lot of the food was ‘open’

hopefully no one whose shopping hadn’t yet been delivered had a cat allergy!

although not sure what supermarkets can do as they need to leave the doors open or each delivery would take 4x as long

DeeTs23 · 16/10/2023 10:13

Never mind rats that are in warehouses peeing and pooping all over everything. 😂

PotatoLove · 16/10/2023 11:11

🙄

fetchacloth · 16/10/2023 19:11

LakeTiticaca · 14/10/2023 19:52

If its wrapped and the cat didn't piss or shit on it it'll be fine

This really 😁

BCSurvivor · 16/10/2023 19:13

I'd be more concerned about the poor cat.
What if the cat had jumped in the van at a previous stop miles away, and has now been shooed away into an unfamiliar area.

Marygoesround · 14/10/2023 19:56

You do know that food grows in the ground and is fertilised with animal crap?
