I appologise in advance if I'm posting this in wrong place. I hoping I can get some advice.

I just had a tesco delivery, when I was taking food in to house my son was helping me, he suddenly noticed there was a cat inside delivery van where customers food is stored and it was walking all over another customers food.

We told the delivery driver and pointed out the cat, at first he didn't seem that bothered even joked that it happens often. Eventually he slowly walked back to van and instead of trying to get cat out quickly, he tried to stroke it, cat eventually jumped out and ran away.

I'm pretty sure it didn't get near my food but feel sorry for the other customers who have no idea a cat has walked all over there food.

Should I contact Tesco's and say something or just leave it.

What would you do.

I'd be livid. I'm allergic to cats, as many people are.

So am I. Severely.

Jeez there are some minging people on here with low standards. Far from being a totally normal thing and we should all accept shit and sneezing and dirty hands etc I don’t want or expect ANY animals around my grocery shopping and Tesco do have a duty of care to keep things as hygienic as possible. I’m afraid I’d be complaining and you are right to be concerned op.

I’m not sure you understand.

people are saying they wash loose products because animals and unhygienic people will have come into contact with food multiple times.

a cat wandering over packed produce isn’t ‘minging’ because the food is protected. For the very few items that are truly Loose (apples, pears, bell peppers) most people will wash them. A cat is no worse than a mouse or a rat or a toddler or a worker who never washes theIr hands.

getting hysterical over a cat is silly. Because there is so much worse stuff you don’t see.

WASH loose products

These days food delivered isnt put in shopping bags it's put loose in to crates. That's why I was concerned. None of my shopping was in bags .

I thought maybe I was over thinking it but what if the cat had wee all over the food.

I know the cat he is a bit of a menace.just thought it was unhygienic.

Vegetables and fruits grow in the great outdoors. They may have been peed on by any number of animals. Food is stored in warehouses. I am pretty sure they are not pest free. I would not worry.

  1. I would wonder if the order included crab sticks
  2. I'm very relieved this isn't a 'cat has been taken away in the van by accident' thread
  3. My face gets walked on by a cat more than that, so relax it'll all be fine 🙂

I'd be more worried about the cat being lost, wouldn't bother me at all about him walking over any food.

This!

I hope the cat lives close by and can get home ok.

Mrsmalelly · 14/10/2023 21:21

I shouldn't think the delivery driver let the cat in their van and when they found it, got it out. What would you do in their shoes? Take everything back to the shop and get the orders made up fresh then start your deliveries again (perhaps in your own time).

AbbeyGailsParty · 14/10/2023 21:23

The cat was in there for a couple of minutes. It wouldn’t pee on random food , they prefer to dig in soil or cat litter to do that. It’s fur wouldn’t have shed much in 2 minutes either.
you do realise that the majority of fruit and veg grows in fields where there are birds, mice, deer, rabbits etc… walking around?

Cowlover89 · 14/10/2023 21:26

You are being ridiculous

JennyJenny8675309 · 14/10/2023 21:27

I’d only worry about the cat going for a drive and getting lost.

Parakeetamol · 14/10/2023 21:29

Wandering spider from the bananas. Yes I'd be concerned. Fluffy from number 5, not so much.

LaurieStrode · 14/10/2023 21:33

Better a cat than some things I can think of. Don't worry about it.

Not everything is. If they're like ASDA they'll be using minimal bags and a lot of loose vegetables come unbagged

Surely people wash and/or peel their vegetables. If they don't they should.

Viviennemary · 14/10/2023 21:40

The food would have been wrapped. So not really a problem.

You've never been in a warehouse or factory have you

JaneAustensHeroine · 14/10/2023 21:41

Food grows outdoors, it gets picked and walked on, moved and transported, stored in various places, handled by staff, customers, possibly dropped on the ground where people and animals have walked…. If we followed the journey of a piece of fruit or veg we probably wouldn’t eat it again.

A cat is nothing.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 14/10/2023 21:42

Errrr could we all please try and remember cats do NOT have feet. They have paws, and they are a thing of wonder.

Cat paws are the best.

CWigtownshire · 14/10/2023 21:43

I agree. I'm allergic but also not an animal lover. Would return my groceries!

LuckyPeonies · 14/10/2023 21:43

And I feel sorry for your kids who are probably denied the pleasure and enrichment of pets!

Do you realize a bazillion flies (which may have previously landed on filth) probably landed on that food before you received it? That workers with very lax loo hygiene transfer faeces and urine to food (see occasional e coli outbreaks from such behavior)? Get over yourself!

HappyCamperTent · 14/10/2023 21:44

Goodness knows what else has walked over your food from sources to house. Chill!

MrsMarzetti · 14/10/2023 21:47

Do you know how many rats and mice there are in warehouses ? Everything will be packaged and i know this might shock but veg grows outside and some even grow in dirt !

A bit of dirt does you good, my granddaughter is always digging around in the dirty, picking up worms etc, I do worry about people like you 🙄

BeetleDeuce · 14/10/2023 21:48

My cat tried to get in every delivery van. He’s been shooed out countless times. It’s really normal: they usually check before driving off.

If this worries you, don’t order food that’s delivered to your house!!

HideTheCroissants · 14/10/2023 21:51

MassageForLife · 14/10/2023 20:06

I find this hard to believe.

When they deliver, they are under very strict instructions about how they go about it - they get all the food for the customer out of the van, lock the van, then take the food to the customer's house. This isn't in case cats get in the van, it's in case someone steals either the van or the food.

I've had deliveries from different supermarkets over the last ten or so years. I have never seen someone leave the van unlocked..

Whereas I’ve never seen them lock the van. My deliveries always have the doors open so can put the creates straight back in.

would you really have an allergic reaction if you touched something that a cat had walked on or walked near to?

i am genuinely curious. While I know people can get allergies from being in pet home without touching the animal but that is usually because the dander has built up over months in soft furnishing. This cat would have been in contact with only the top layer of packages (probably plastic) for likely a minute or two. Would that be enough to trigger an allergic reaction?
