I appologise in advance if I'm posting this in wrong place. I hoping I can get some advice.

I just had a tesco delivery, when I was taking food in to house my son was helping me, he suddenly noticed there was a cat inside delivery van where customers food is stored and it was walking all over another customers food.

We told the delivery driver and pointed out the cat, at first he didn't seem that bothered even joked that it happens often. Eventually he slowly walked back to van and instead of trying to get cat out quickly, he tried to stroke it, cat eventually jumped out and ran away.

I'm pretty sure it didn't get near my food but feel sorry for the other customers who have no idea a cat has walked all over there food.

Should I contact Tesco's and say something or just leave it.

What would you do.

It's a food that has been in factories, lorries, vans, warehouses and on the shelf allsorts of animals and people will of touched it this is why food is in packaging and your suppose to wash food that isn't because a rats probably pissed on it.

Portakalkedi · 14/10/2023 20:50

Food is all wrapped, and I'd guess at least half of it is going to houses where dogs and cats are all over everything.

EatYourVegetables · 14/10/2023 20:55

When you get food from a supermarket, it might have been touched by loads of people with questionable hand washing habits, or have been placed in a trolley previously occupied by someone’s darling child who trampled all over it with their dog shit smeared shoes.

I’d choose the cat.

welcome to the jungle thats mumsnet, your question was understandable, its just fellow mumsnetters, most a nice and friendly, some are rude, its a mix at times

Normcore · 14/10/2023 20:56

I’d worry more about the rats and mice which have walked over it in the warehouse . And rats wee as they walk. That’s why I always pour my drinks into a glass before I drink.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 14/10/2023 20:57

Cats can be nosy buggers. I don’t think mine would get into the Tescos/Sainsburys delivery vans as she’s always inside when they come. I’d be worried a cat might stowaway but the most a cat might do is shed some hair but nothing else. It’s not going to piss or shit in the van. Cats are very clean animals generally.

These days food delivered isnt put in shopping bags it's put loose in to crates. That's why I was concerned. None of my shopping was in bags .

I thought maybe I was over thinking it but what if the cat had wee all over the food.

I know the cat he is a bit of a menace.just thought it was unhygienic.

But it's still packaged, isn't it? My deliveries are all either in packaging or in plastic bags. YABU. I'm allergic to cats but I wouldn't give this a second thought.

dawngreen · 14/10/2023 20:57

What the heck can a driver do he has to gather the order into crates. Don't forget the people packing items for delivery, and the warehouse staff. I would worry more about any staff having covid and still working. Its not perfect but its life.

Kate9423 · 14/10/2023 20:59

People are as unhygienic. I wouldn't think twice....

maddiemookins16mum · 14/10/2023 21:02

The cat will be cleaner than the van, the crates, the loading area etc.

HughCanoe · 14/10/2023 21:04

MassageForLife · 14/10/2023 20:18

I didn't consider a bigger order - mine are usually two to four crates. If it was more then it makes sense that they would have to make more trips.

That makes sense and I had thought that maybe you only order small amounts.

Dice3 · 14/10/2023 21:04

Dislike cats then?

Rosejasmine · 14/10/2023 21:08

Honestly - you will not catch anything from a cat checking out your food.
Human hands that handle the groceries however can carry Norovirus and covid and all sorts of other nasties that could infect you - but generally we don’t catch these things from our groceries do we?Your groceries will be mostly packaged and surely you would wash or peel or cook most things anyway.
What an overreaction. You’ll all be fine and phoning Tesco about a cat in the van is ridiculous.

Someone needs to explain to a few posters that vegetables grow in dirt…

I find this hard to believe.

When they deliver, they are under very strict instructions about how they go about it - they get all the food for the customer out of the van, lock the van, then take the food to the customer's house. This isn't in case cats get in the van, it's in case someone steals either the van or the food.

I've had deliveries from different supermarkets over the last ten or so years. I have never seen someone leave the van unlocked..

Do you live in a dodgy area? Our drivers never lock their van to come down the drive. Quite often, they come to us and then go across the road straight after (we have both got in the habit of having a delivery at the same time) and the driver generally comes to me first, then leaves the side of the van open on my side as he goes across the road to deliver to them, she has a disability so they take the shopping in to her house for her too, so it takes even longer.

im more concerned my cat is going to be to curious and jump in the van and end up going on a day trip round the town before jumping out at the next stop tbh.

Open doors on food delivery vans is very normal round me, in fact I recently walked past one with the engine running, I remember thinking I could have hopped in and driven off

No way do all the drivers lock the doors when they are trundling the crates up drives

Ditto on parcel delivery vans. I think they don't have time to do anything else with how many deliveries they need to do.

I'd be livid. I'm allergic to cats, as many people are.

I'm highly allergic to cats, 1 minute of a cat wandering through the groceries is not going to illicit a reaction, it just isn't

MyGooseisTotallyLoose · 14/10/2023 21:14

I will also add in the incomers in my village who are aghast tractors are muddy and cows moo so not surprised peopled confusion re veg and soil

Screamingabdabz · 14/10/2023 21:16

Jeez there are some minging people on here with low standards. Far from being a totally normal thing and we should all accept shit and sneezing and dirty hands etc I don’t want or expect ANY animals around my grocery shopping and Tesco do have a duty of care to keep things as hygienic as possible. I’m afraid I’d be complaining and you are right to be concerned op.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/10/2023 21:17

I'd be more worried about the cat being lost in a strange area. I wouldn't give a second thought to the food!

Where do you shop that you can buy food which hasn’t had animals running over it?

You do understand that even food bought from Waitrose will have had mice and rats pissing all over it, don’t you?

Topsyturvy78 · 14/10/2023 21:18

It will be wrapped this is why I always wash my fruit and veg. A lot of people I know don't bother. But you don't know who's touched it before you.
