It's worried about the rise of anti-semitism. Do you think the same thing will happen here?

@bombastix "Similar experience in China, threatened by s machete, "

Whaaat?

That's awful !

Glad you were OK.

Do you speak Mandarin/Cantonese by any chance?

Well Israel is a dangerous place; it was won by force, it's kept by force, and you move around by the grace of the government. If you have ever been there you will see it from the moment you arrive. This is not some European country where you can stroll around as you please.

And this is not against Israel- they would be the first to say that their freedom comes with security and their society runs on it.

It is the only place I have ever been where I was asked if I had a gun before I went into a five star hotel.

It's the only place I've been where a group of twenties walked into a beach bar in shorts, T-shirts and carrying semi automatic machine guns.

Certainly added a frisson to a lunchtime sharpener.

I was very lucky to have such a speaker of Mandarin with me. But it teaches you how to bargain with others and make a deal.

I think maybe some people on MN are rather naive with foreign travel apart from going for a week in Benidorm.

I was in Barcelona on business years ago when there were problems with ETA (Basque Separatist Group).
When I went into the bank in the daytime, to cash some travellers cheques the bullet holes in the windows made me a bit uneasy.

When some of us went for a walk down the main street that night we walked into some kind of a demonstration. Within minutes we were told to stand up against a wall by police who had some type of gun held by a strap on their shoulder.
Thank goodness we could explain (in Spanish) that we weren't terrorists, and after producing our passports we were allowed to go back to the hotel.

No-one appreciates UK until you have had such experiences.

Sorry for your experience.
im basque so i know what ETA is. I’ve been to demonstrations. Also lived close to someone that was killed. At no point I felt scared of living in the basque country. At no point was I a target of the Spanish government to stop ETA. They never tried moving us somewhere else in order to bomb where the ETA caves where. I’ve been to demos against ETA and also walked In front of families demonstrating for the release of their relatives. Never ever have I felt unsecured in my home town. Never had problems with the police. However , I know people that have had , mainly for supporting ideas related with the independence of the Basque Country. These people have suffered tortures and horrible things. There is still political prisioners in the Basque Country. Whilst some things are similar , they are far far away from what is happening at the moment In Palestina.

Yikes !

Mind you in USA so many have a 'concealed carry' permit you could be shot for looking at someone the wrong way 😳

bombastix · 15/10/2023 21:09

@bananasplitsarefab - the UK is a treasure. Really. It is easy to disparage it, but one thing I love very much about it is its dislike of extremity. It has great stability. Even the last few years which have been a challenge have shown it's robustness.

I travel a lot. The UK is unbelievably predictable and dull. I love that most of all!

This is quite a moving discussion with a well known Holocaust survivor.

I would urge anyone to watch this, irrespective of whose side you're on, or if you're on the fence.

Highandlows · 15/10/2023 21:31

I was not there and would have never gone to this protest. However, the numbers were exaggerated for some reason.

“Ben Jamal, director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the organiser of the event, told The Independent towards the end of the march that they believed 100,000 people had been in attendance.
The police suggested the total was much lower, closer to 10,000, though they admitted it was subject to change.”

with respect I cannot right now watch either esteemed Israelis or Palestinians discuss this

both parties are traumatised and understandably so
even the best of the best will have some personal bias

id love it if world leaders could approach this with a best for all and neutral unbiased approach
ha

Dr Gabor Maté is Hungarian by birth but now also has Canadian citizenship. He has spent time in Israel but never lived there.

I think pro-palestinians were demonstrating in the streets before Israel attacked Gaza, they were celebrating the attack that Hamas had made on Israel.

Yes they were, and the French quite understandably don't want to see any more celebration of atrocities

So since it's only the pro Palestinians who've been doing this it's they who have been banned - and quite right too

You can't equate snipers with drone operators

I haven't, of course, as she wasn't killed by a drone; rather, she was shot in the head from close range, by a sniper. It's even in the linked report.

Caketothemilk · 16/10/2023 12:35

That's a shame. The bombing needs to stop. People can't watch it all unfold and do nothing about it.

Why does Netanyahu thinks it's a good idea to save Palestinians from Hamas by carpet bombing the Palestinians and half their population is children 👼

notimagain · 16/10/2023 12:47

I'm honestly not sure feeling here is that the attack in Arras was simply in protest over events in Israel/Gazza last week, though I guess that might be used by some as an excuse of some sort.

The attacker's family history is starting to look more and more interesting, in rather a grim way, and I'm afraid it's manna from heaven for the right wing who are asking (possibly with good reason) why at least some of the family were still in France and why surveillance seems to have been inadequate.

Lastchancechica · 15/10/2023 07:54

WTAF?????

Not sure why you are surprised. Of course their leader - who Is one of those who planned the attack - will say that. I have seen over the last week or so, on television and on Twitter, a lot of people saying they are proud of what Hamas did and literally calling them heroes. I am not just talking about Arabs, but talking about your average garden anti Semite in this country and abroad.

That's not to mention the denial of so much of happened despite the fact that Hamas recorded much of it on bodycams and loaded it onto the internet. Plus cctv, dashcam footage and victims' mobiles.

This was tragic.

However, none of us know how these drones are operated and what visibility the operators have because it will be classified information.

There are different sorts of drones.

This was certainly a military drone that has fire capacity.

Unless we have military experience in operating these military items we aren't really in a position to make judgements are we?

Unless we have military experience in operating these military items we aren't really in a position to make judgements are we?

Actually we can make a judgement in this case.

We really, really can.

You can't have it both ways.

Some posters are
Israel death? Horrible horrible they should oh for it
Palestinian death ? Shit happens. It was an accident it’s all the fault of hamas.

so yeah some are trying to have it both ways depending where the decease lived. To me a death is a death independently who killed it , none should have died

FairylightsandHygge · 15/10/2023 09:25

Hamas was created by Netanyahu and funded by Israel. Do you deny this? Palestinians hate Hamas.

what a load of rubbish!

Hamas was formed in 1987, before Netanyahu was involved in politics, he certainly has huge faults but Israel funded and formed Hamas... really?

Teentaxidriver · 17/10/2023 10:34

EasterIssland - do you read a newspaper or do you get all of your (fake) news online? Do yourself a favour and buy a broad sheet newspaper today. It might open your eyes to what went on during the pro-paelstine demo. I am sick to death of ignorant hand wringer posting nonsense on here.

The two are not equivalent although ETA was part of the international terrorist network with PIRA and Hamas.

ETA was, in terrorist terms, child's play compared to PIRA. And PIRA is a walk in the park compared to Hamas.

ETA lasted for about 60 years with 800 murders in that time. PIRA over 30 years with 1,800 murders.

But Hamas on 7th October 2023 murdered 1,300 Israelis.

There is no comparison between the three conflict zones except for the international terrorist network between them which included Iran.

DownNative · 17/10/2023 10:47

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 15/10/2023 13:10

@FOJN I think you need to consider that the identity of the Palestinians is often co-opted by jihadis for all over the world in the name of holy war. What is happening right now is that Iran has used Hamas to engineer a situation in which it can legitimately have a go at Israel and be supported by quite a chunk of the western population in doing so.

I’m afraid I see the ‘Free Palestine’ crowd in the US and U.K. as useful, if well meaning, idiots who are being whipped up to aid Iran in their ultimate aim of wiping out Israel as a state.

Correct, a lot of people in the Western world don't really understand the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by any means.

Most of them cannot tell propaganda from reality which is why terrorist groups are able to effectively manipulate them emotionally.

Unfortunately, too many Westerners apply Western theories onto the conflict, especially the colonial v Native theories. They forget or don't know that Israeli Jews are also from the Middle East.

Useful idiots, indeed.
