It's worried about the rise of anti-semitism. Do you think the same thing will happen here?

There is a part of me that really resents this because if ever there was a time to protest against the treatment of Palestinians it would be during this retaliation but I recognise it is the right decision. People celebrating a terrorist attack is shameful as is the blatant antisemitism but most importantly they might embolden people to hurt Jews.

It is funny nobody is mentioning Islamophobia because I’m definitely seeing an increase in Islamophobic comments also.

Desdemonadryeyes · 12/10/2023 22:30

Isn’t Hamas the elected government of Gaza?

ssd · 12/10/2023 22:30

sunshinesupermum · 12/10/2023 22:14

Antisemitism is hatred of Jewish people including those living in Israel. Hamas hates Jews and they are the governing body in Gaza where many Palestinians live. The rest live in the West Bank and are governed by Fatah.
Hamas has as their charter death to ALL Jews. They committed the worst massacre of Jewish life since the end of World War 2 last Saturday. So supporting Palestine is supporting hatred of Jews. Antizionism OTOH is acting against Israel as the Jewish state and its right to exist. Hope that makes a very complex issue clearer namechange10894

"So supporting Palestine is supporting hatred of Jews"

No its not.

No. But what's your point?

Supporting palestine is supporting hatred of Jews, are you serious? So does supporting Israel mean I hate Muslims?

The low level of intelligence of some of these mumsnet folk is mind blowing.

Meta123 · 12/10/2023 22:33

Being pro-palestinian is not antisemitic. To suggest this is mind blowing. You can be against the Israeli government and have zero hatred towards Jews. The death of the Palestinian children is not at the hand of the Jews for goodness sake it is from Netamyahu and his government.

sunshinesupermum · 12/10/2023 22:33

Jeez! I specifically use the word Hamas!

Hugosauras · 12/10/2023 22:35

I hope that it doesn't follow suit in this country. I doubt that it will. However, I would ban any pro Palestinian matches in or around Jewish areas, not allow celebratory or provocative matches and not allow lit flares etc. I would also monitor closely for hate speech. However, peaceful marches highlighting the plight of the Palestinian people should absolutely be allowed.

Superfoodie123 · 12/10/2023 22:35

I have Jewish friends and know of Jewish academics who deplore Israel. Does this mean they are anti semitic? It's a genuine question

How so? Surely it's at the hands of Hamas.

Because Netanyahus government is bombing children and starving them? Prior to this attack, children were murdered and this is a regular occurrence in Gaza. Prior to Hamas existing this happened.

Hugosauras · 12/10/2023 22:40

@NotSuchASmugMarried

Well yes, Hamas is the elected govt of Gaza. Not officially of course. Fatah is officially the govt of Palestine, but 50% of Gaza apparently voted for Hamas in 2003 and they have refused to recognise Fatah or allow them into Gaza. There was some attempts to govern together, but it didn't last long before it fell to pieces.

Apartheid leads to deaths.
Israel should stop being an apartheid state.

I meant in France or over here. People might be killed in these countries.

MustbeFeverTree · 12/10/2023 22:02

Are they banning pro Israel demos? Not worried about Islamaphobia?

This!

TomatoSandwiches · 12/10/2023 22:41

It's disrespectful and disingenuous to not acknowledge the very important nuances when discussing Hamas and innocent civilian Palestinians.

namechange10894 · 12/10/2023 22:41

I have friends who support Palestine and have done for decades but they don’t hate Jewish people. To date I’ve actually never heard them mention anything bad about Jewish people. That’s why I asked such a question. These friends have also visited Palestine and have such sad stories to tell about the people living there - both Palestinian Muslims & Christians. None of these friends were celebrating Hamas either.

Stomacharmeleon · 12/10/2023 22:41

The way I see it...
Hamas is the elected government of Palestine. Their mandate is death to all Jews. That's pretty unequivocal. They hide weapons amongst their people. They spend the billions in aid they have received from numerous governments on weapons rather than water plants or hospitals. Israel left both and continued to support Gaza.
Hamas does not want a two state situation.
Evil terrorists have done unspeakable things to civilians. We can argue semantics over what happened exactly to those babies but they were murdered in cold blood, women raped and people abducted. Not soldiers or people covering for terrorists but people living quietly on a kibbutz.
I stand by Israel and their right to defend themselves.
Is there any reason Egypt won't or can't accept those fleeing Gaza?

NotSuchASmugMarried · 12/10/2023 22:41

Desdemonadryeyes · 12/10/2023 22:38

@NotSuchASmugMarried

So who does govern Gaza?

Hamas "governs" Gaza, if you can call it governs. But there hasn't been an election there since Gaza were voted in in 2006 and haven't held elections since because they don't want to relinquish power. Never mind what the citizens want.

It's because they use them as human shields. Thats on them, not on Israel.

Israel have been bombing near the border and won't allow Egypt to let people across or for Egypt to deliver aid.

NotSuchASmugMarried · 12/10/2023 22:45

I could hazard a guess that they are worried about Hamas sneaking in with the refugees. See, Egypt don't want them either. In fact, I don't see any of the Arab states rushing to help them. But that shouldn't surprise me. I'm old enough to remember that they didn't do anything to help the ethnic albanian muslims when they were being slaughtered either.

How exactly is Israel an apartheid state? 20% of Israelis are Arabs. They are full citizens no different from Jews. They are doctors, teachers, lawyers. An Israeli Arab judge sits in the Supreme Court.
