To be fair, we'd just had Brexit and it was expected to confer immunity upon us, together with all its other manifold benefits, what with Covid being a dodgy foreign virus that had no place in the Little England of Bozo fans.

tobee · 31/10/2023 16:33

I only say that because I want to hear the questions and answers properly

Totally agree. Every time it gets to a juicy bit you've got Sky rabbiting on about swearing and then I miss what I want to hear.

DuncinToffee · 31/10/2023 16:50

He is just so foul

Hahaha that made me laugh out loud!

I think there's actually a lot of truth in this ostensibly satirical comment

tobee · 31/10/2023 17:00

As in government thoughts in case that wasn't clear

Roussette · 31/10/2023 17:00

Haha Cummings not getting an easy ride on Barnard Castle. He did his stupid press conference and took no questions. He's got the questions now.

Roussette · 31/10/2023 17:02

He really is the pits. He won't apologise. It was the Government's handling of it. Not him doing it.

DuncinToffee · 31/10/2023 17:28

All because they wanted brexit done

Hugo Keith, "You helped to put into power someone who was in your view unfit to respond to the difficult demands of a pandemic?"

Dominic Cummings, "Correct"

HK, "Are you sorry?"

DC, "No.. Politics is about choices. We had a choice to see Jeremy Corbyn and a second referendum on Brexit or to roll the dice on Boris Johnson"

@tobee from what I've read, the closure initiative came from the government in the first place, so that they could reduce the subsidies paid to rail companies. This is why the rail companies are now so angry, they feel they've been stabbed in the back.

The government are U-turning because they have felt the weight of public opinion and they know that this is a bad idea which will hit their voter base hardest.

I understand that government by opinion of the Telegraph worked well in the pandemic, so am pleased to see that the same approach is continuing.

I do wonder though if there are enough flip flops to go around.

I missed this (readying my pumpkin 🎃 and sweeties 🍬 Grin) any chance someone could enlighten me please?

Cummings defends lockdown-busting trip to Durham, but says No 10 handling of media row was 'disaster'
Keith ended by asking Cummings about the Barnard Castle affair, when Cummings took his family from London to his parents’ home in County Durham when the country was in lockdown, and trips like this were supposed to be banned. Cummings also drove his family to Barnard Castle to “test his eyesight” before driving back to London.
Cummings claimed there were security reasons why he needed to leave London. Asked why he needed his family in the car on the trip to test his eyesight, he conceded they did not need to be there.
Asked if he accepted that he caused huge offence, Cummings defended his decision to move his family out of London for a time. But he says the way No 10 handled the story was “an absolute car crash”.

And this from Johnson

Boris Johnson: "Cummings a total and utter liar"

"He never told me he had gone to Durham during lockdown"

"He later claimed he had told me but my brain was fogged by COVID that I didn't register"

"Why is the the BBC carrying this? It's the end of [Laura] Kuenssberg"

Conservatives will aim to put some distance between themselves and Cummings - better to portray Cummings as a maverick freelancer that was accidentally employed and then shockingly went rogue rather than somebody they willingly handed the reins over to and then fucked off to go skiing or whatever.

And most of the Cabinet are still in place (different title maybe but still senior).

The sheer inadequacy of them.

Eve · 31/10/2023 18:32

Who is the ‘We’ so much for unelected officials!! 😡😡

DC, "No.. Politics is about choices. We had a choice to see Jeremy Corbyn and a second referendum on Brexit or to roll the dice on Boris Johnson

cakeorwine · 31/10/2023 18:57

I wonder if they will discuss furlough at all?

What were their thoughts about that?

DuncinToffee · 31/10/2023 19:03

There was a mention of it

https://x.com/implausibleblog/status/1719417665544925695?s=20

Andrew O'Connor, "From Patrick Vallance's notes: Chancellor Rishi Sunak blocking notion of paying those on low wages to make it viable for them to isolate, despite evidence this is needed. Were you aware of this resistance?"

Lee Cain, "I don't remember. But Rishi Sunak's furlough scheme was a success"

Yes. "We thought". Did we? Is that the royal "we" Mr Cummings or is it you and your secret admirers? Please tell. You work/ed for us, remember?

I am still confused about his status. Was he employed by the conservatives or by civil service? I thought it was the party because there were calls for Johnson to sack him. (not that it matters I agree with the point you are making, he was in a position of power. I hate the way he behaved when so many sacrifices were being made and his denials).

IClaudine · 01/11/2023 07:36

Cummings was hired by Johnson (but paid by the governmemt). He wasn't a civil servant.

Isn't it odd that everyone except Cummings was an incompetent?

That’s always the way with Cummings. The interesting thing is usually trying to find the grains of truth with him.

Notonthestairs, you really have rattled the 'google it' poster this morning Halloween Grin
