This is worrying and Donelan's response is not assuring me.

Science Secretary Michelle Donelan told the BBC people's private data would not be sold without their consent.

Alex Karp

Sale of NHS data up to government, says tech boss

The head of Palantir, which is in the running for an NHS contract, says it would not have access to data.

Palantir don't own the data and the owner is telling the truth about how they handle it. I would not be too concerned, this is small fry especially when compared to the amount of personal data the likes of google/amazon/meta hold on all of us.

I find it fascinating that the public (in general) are happy for private companies to be able to track us in order to sell us shit, but very concerned about the government using data with specific legal and governance oversight. It's a paradox.

mibbelucieachwell · 30/10/2023 12:05

The man from Palantir on the beeb news last night looked unhinged and frankly sounded like an odd ball. He gave off decidedly Dominic Cummings vibes imo.

He claimed that no other similar IT systems work.

newnamethanks · 30/10/2023 14:27

Reminded me of an older Sam Bankman Fried. That's not necessarily a good thing.

DuncinToffee · 30/10/2023 14:36

I have only seen snippets of Martin Reynolds being questioned in the Covid Inquiry but it is bad Angry

I hope I can find a decent summary later today.

Party Marty hanging his head in shame and apologising about coralling everyone to come to a pary in the height of lockdown May ... makes me sick. We all know that... had he not been found out.. he would be apologising for absolutely nothing.

And didn't we know that Johnson was totally incapable of leading. He couldn't lead a conga line if he tried. Useless vain ego driven idiot.

Notonthestairs · 30/10/2023 15:57

I'm grateful to see those messages.

I wondered whether my personal distaste for Johnson's politics had coloured my thinking.

But no. He was shit at leading and that contributed to how the UK weathered covid.

They literally took February half term off!! No Cab meetings. No COBRA. The Italian health service was buckling under the strain and No 10 shut up shop for a week.

Appreciate that the leaders that have followed have been worse (and that will only continue) but it's reinforced the worst of my interpretations of what went on.

Fucks sakes. They were in charge of our schools. They resisted calls because it was more important to stick it to teachers unions than listen. WhatsApp attached to Tweet.

"Acc to Case, Johnson & Williamson were in “no surrender” mode over masks in schools as warnings came from unions

@kategobell: “Parents, pupils, school staff & the public will be horrified to learn lives were put at risk because ministers were pursuing a petty political vendetta”

Roussette · 30/10/2023 16:03

Totally agree. If I remember correctly... during Feb 2020 Johnson was either negotiating his divorce deal with his ex wife, or writing his book on Churchill at Chequers.
He really is disgusting.

I doubt anyone will be horrified because that was fairly obvious at the time.

Notonthestairs · 30/10/2023 16:07

& don't get me started on Johnson's secret conflabs with Lebedev before lockdown.

No records of what was discussed but I think we can guess.

“We are killing the patient to tackle the tumour”

Next line: Why are we destroying the economy for people who are going to die anyway?

That’s pretty much cooked Sunak’s goose I’d have thought.

DuncinToffee · 30/10/2023 17:01

Shafi thinks they were Johnson's words but Sunak is very much part of it. No wonder he 'lost' his whatsapps

Principles? Didn't know they had any.

DuncinToffee · 30/10/2023 17:08

From the BBC blog

Just a few minutes ago, Imran Shafi was asked about the Eat Out To Help Out scheme put in place by Rishi Sunak when he was chancellor to encourage people back into pubs and restaurants in the summer of 2020.

Remarkably he was asked if chief medical officer Sir Chris Whitty had described it as "Eat Out To Help Out The Virus".

Shafi confirmed that was the case.

Confirming Sunak surrounds himself with yes men. So no talent, no challenges, no listening. Definitely no leadership.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/10/2023 17:20

Who would have guessed that Boris would turn out to be a shit PM in a moment of crisis? If only there had been some clues before he was elected.

Zonder · 30/10/2023 17:01

Principles? Didn't know they had any.

Like pledges or promises or whatever they are this week, they’ve probably been downgraded.
