Morning.

Morning 👋

I love everything that he says. Might actually join the party. Really like the idea of devolving more powers to mayors for their local areas. It seems to work well in Manchester and Birmingham. I think for things like travel planning its vital.

Labour's leader will say postwar-style new towns and housing powers can help "build a new Britain".

Fanks for fred Dunc.

We need it. Because at any one moment in time, some shocking/gobsmacking thing will happen with the Tories and this is my go-to place!

BIossomtoes · 10/10/2023 09:55

Thank you so much Duncin.

countrygirl99 · 10/10/2023 10:07

I think house building is going to become an even bigger issue. Had lunch with a friend who's husband is a brickie. He's got no work for the next few weeks for the first time in his life (mid 40s). Sites are stopping releasing new plots and only completing what's already started. He knows a lot of people who are currently looking for work as they finish sites. South Midlands.

AdamRyan · 10/10/2023 10:13

Yeah, the house building is interesting. If prices are falling the builders won't be interested.

I did wonder if housing might be the plan for some of the land compulsory purchased for aborted HS2. It would also be a way to improve the road networks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/10/2023 10:20

Morning all. What can the Tories break today?

BestIsWest · 10/10/2023 10:21

Morning.

Lonelycrab · 10/10/2023 10:24

Thanks as ever Dunc and all. Have fallen a little bit behind as I’m reading other threads, trying to absorb and understand the horrific world events going on right now 😔 but thanks once again

pointythings · 10/10/2023 10:28

@Lonelycrab at least the Israel war means we currently don't have hordes of shills spreading shitty lies about Labour during their conference.

Efacsen · 10/10/2023 10:28

Thanks

AdamRyan · 10/10/2023 10:35

It's a bit annoying though as it means Labour's messages are getting overshadowed so it'll lead to more "noone knows what they stand for"

Notonthestairs · 10/10/2023 10:53

Thanks for the thread Duncin.

Those posters wouldn't listen to or read about the conference anyway. It's easier to complain about a lack of policy than engage.

pointythings · 10/10/2023 11:01

The 'don't know what Labour stands for' brigade can be signposted to information from the conference, which they will ignore, and then we can tell them we told them and it's on them.

In other news, DS has started his job and is really enjoying it.

mibbelucieachwell · 10/10/2023 11:28

Morning all.

I'd like to hear that Labour has more plans for how to 'grow the economy'. Green technologies sound good in principle. But what else? Apart from building more residential properties?

More cooperation with EU sounds good. But how significant will this be?

I'd like the regulators (Ofgem etc) to have more powers and have much stricter rules about working for them then moving into the industries regulated by them. Or, nationalise essential services and run them well. This would benefit everyone instead of just a few shareholders.

More spending on supporting people who need help: at risk children, mental health services, addiction support. It seems to me that the cost is outweighed by the improvement in health and reduction of crime, antisocial behaviour and crime.

And for goodness sake, cap private rent.

IClaudine · 10/10/2023 11:38

Morning all, thanks for the new thread @DuncinToffee .

AdamRyan · 10/10/2023 12:19

I'm very excited by the pro- women policies from Thornberry/Cooper today

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-politics-67052729

Loving what I'm hearing from them, they are taking the fight to the tories now by going big on crime and the economy

Bringing back Sure Start I think is a vote winner for people my age too - we had children when sure start was there who are leaving secondary now and can see the impact of their removal

It also said that while "this is not detention accommodation" the men would need to "sign in and out of the site when you leave and return" so the Home office can "assure your safety".

My Sure Start centre was a great after DD was born and later when I developed PND - along with my GP.

mibbelucieachwell · 10/10/2023 12:53

I missed the sure start news. That's excellent.

Starmer was glittered by a protester as he started his speech this afternoon. Thank goodness it was only glitter.
It was a bit of a mixed speech I thought, but one that the conference seemed to find rousing. Certainly better than anything I heard at the Tory conference anyhow.
