Right now, after 19 years, I'm bowing out of MN.

I've dipped in and out, many names, banned once for suggesting kids with severe educational problems won't make great health care professionals; iCod etc etc.

But. Seriously. It's now like Twitter with vibes.

I wish you well. And am sorry you didn't get to experience MN at its best 10-15 years ago.

Some of those MN royalty types were mean girls. The place is full of callous men and sarcastic mean girls now. It's still a negative place, it's just a different type of negativity.

I think there's quite a bit of competition as to who can get the nastiest comment in. Also, eco lifestyle purity spirals are always in the background. Very tedious.

Ive been here since 2004 i think and i do think mn was much nicer, funnier and just better back in the day. But i still get support from like minded people here. Thats a shame you dont op.

Where will you go if you're not on here (asking for a friend) ?

parameciumparty · 01/10/2023 13:28

I can't believe people recommend Reddit. It's like falling into a toxic waste cesspit and never being able to scramble out.

This place is merely negative and depressing 😂

Laiste · 01/10/2023 13:31

I'm a 2007'er.

<waves at all the oldies>

I love AIBU for it's bear pit qualities.

The other boards for specific situations are much more supportive and the place to go if you want actual support.

Laiste · 01/10/2023 13:33

Also i think MN is a victim of the way the whole world is going. It's not it's fault, iykwim?

Peacendkindness · 01/10/2023 13:33

I’ve been on here since 2007.

I get the feeling many of the posts I reply to with my advice are actually trolls - bizarre things and people asking for advice when they really need a solicitor or just want to hear a certain reply.

sometimes it defeats me - a poster wanting support to go no contact and then after support and advice 6 weeks and she’s back to square 1. But that’s life ….. so I try not to be too invested in outcomes. I’m

I've been here for 18 years. Yes, it has changed. I blame the media exposure for the kind of people it attracts now.
There's so much going on but it's still a good place for support.

Why don't you stay and be one of the voices that can give some sound guidance?

TenPenceMix · 01/10/2023 13:48

Sorry to see you go. Ignore the horrible comments

Seriously, check your X feed, then this, they're the same.

Waaay back, 19 years, this was a resource for women, mums, looking for support.

Can you seriously say it is now?

well, that rather depends on what/who you follow on X/Twitter doesn't it? My feed is nothing like MN.

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/10/2023 14:01

Steady on OP. You'll be accused of being mired in toxic nostalgia as I was by someone being arsey on here this week.

I think everyone who has used Mumsnet a long time much preferred it in the earlier days. Yes, even with the cliques. It was more varied, there was more humour, there were no stupid AIBU questions eg. AIBU to ask how much your baby weighed?

Nowadays the content is depressingly 90% bad relationships, people posting photos of the piles or bowel movements, and unending squabbling on threads.

JaneJeffer · 01/10/2023 15:17

I didn't. Much more diversity these days.

No, definitely not.

Laiste · 01/10/2023 16:52

I was reading a thread the other day and it was bloody hilarious!

I thought 'ha this is like old MN when there were a lot of posters with really funny bones'.

Then i realised it was a zombie thread from yonks ago.

That's the only thing i miss, the really funny fuckers. Apart from that i'm ok with it now.

scryingeyes · 01/10/2023 17:08

My eldest is 25, been here since finding out about it in a Mother and Baby mag, never been away.
Probably had about half a dozen different names.
I come on MN for light entertainment, company, advice, ghost stories, laughes, gossip, conspiracies, ideas, recipes, news, different perspectives and something to do when DH has the remote.
My life is full of MN acronyms that no one in RL understands.
It's my haven. It's my confidant. You're my sounding board.
If I find anything repulsive or offensive, I hide the thread and move on.
I'm here at least once a day. * thinking I deserve some kind of gold watch for my loyalty to be honest*
