Do I tell my cleaner I can see her weight on my phone?

I just got some new Bluetooth bathroom scales as I'm doing Slimming World online and I'm finding the additional data and tracking information useful.

When I looked at this morning's data, I noticed there were two entries for yesterday - one at 7.30am and one at 11.29am. Both weights were similar so at first I thought, that's weird, I don't remember weighing again later and it was 2lbs lighter, so I would have remembered that!

Then I realised that it couldn't have been me but the timing coincides with when my cleaner was in that bathroom and I was downstairs. Her weight is probably similar to mine but she's tiny, about 4ft 10 to my 5ft 4 so perhaps she wants to keep track.

I've deleted that entry from my records. I have no problem with her using the scales - she has the WiFi password and we encourage her to feel comfortable here, we pay her above the going rate and give her birthday and Christmas gifts. We've known her for 5 years. The dilemma is, shall I tell her that I can see her weigh ins?

If she used the scales in the other bathroom, they're not Bluetooth and we wouldn't know!

Why on earth did you think you needed to include that she's heavier/shorter than you op?

What next, a Bluetooth lavatory?

''You last evacuated your bowels at 7.10 am, the mass was 500 grammes''

Oh god …that has made me laugh! Maybe then synced with scales to give a truly accurate weight, right down to the last microgramme!

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 30/09/2023 11:51

No. Never ever say anything about it.

removing the scales (or replacing them with old ones) might be a good idea.

or just continue deleting it.

as for those mentioning the 2lbs difference… well, go to the toilet, take off your shoes and or a jumper and you’ll be there. Doesn’t mean she stripped naked in the OP’s bathroom...

OP might be trying to brag/make a point about her weight.

or she’s (clumsily) trying to point out that the cleaner might be a bit pudgy. Which may make weight a somewhat sensitive topic.
Somebody who is unhappy about their weight may be much more embarrassed about this than a person who is at a weight they consider ideal.

Why am the I only one who finds the cleaner using my scales odd? She's there to work not to weight herself. Plus if you want to watch your weight you should weigh at the same time every day clothes off etc etc. Far too much fuss at a workplace.

Buy her a set of scales as an early Christmas present then you won't have this issue.

The weighing part isn't odd. It takes seconds and, if you don't have scales, it's quite tempting if you see a set just to hop on.

It's the giving access to the wi fi I find odd. I can't think why your cleaner needs wi-fi when she or he is there to do a specific, manual job.

QueSyrahSyrah · 30/09/2023 09:55

An aside, but isn't it really annoying to have a set of scales that only 'work' for one person in the household, in terms of sending all data to one app?

I'd rather have scales we can all use and just type the weight into my app at the time.

Me too, but maybe the OP lives alone. Or maybe no one else weighs themself. I'd have thought there must be a way to only record your own weighings.

EquallyDetermined · 30/09/2023 12:21

As for the wifi, maybe its so she can stream music or listen to the radio on her phone. Doesn't mean she's slacking or up to no good.

But that's the thing though - she didn't just 'hop on'. She did it twice, 4 hours apart. She can't have lost that much weight in the space of 4 hours so presumably the second time she did it properly, taking her clothes off etc, Or went to the toilet. Either way, more than a few seconds.

As a PP said she could use WiFi to listen to Spotify etc.

I also don't know why people make a big fuss about 'being nice' to their cleaners. I respect mine as professionals, pay them decently and in turn expect them to be professional in my home. That includes not using my stuff - unless they want to make a cup of tea which in most workplaces is standard anyway. The way so many are tiptoeing around it, telling OP to 'just delete' instead of telling the cleaner not to use the scales strikes me as really odd.

NatashaDancing · 30/09/2023 12:43

I don't think she did. The 2 readings were the OP's and the cleaner's ?

Why does a cleaner need wi-fi access?

A cleaner is there to do a specific, manual job. Every one has mobile data on phones if for some reason (unrelated to the job) the cleaner needs to access the internet.

I’ve had quite a few cleaning jobs, and also had a couple of cleaners myself. And the people cleaners want to work for are the ones who treat them like decent people, don’t pay minimum wage for cleaning their skanky toilets, remember us at Christmas, don’t care if we know the WiFi password and make us a coffee now and then. You know, kind people.

Smittenkitchen · 30/09/2023 12:46

I disagree with many PP and feel that you should let her know. I'm sure she'd prefer not to be beaming that info to her employer's device!

Ah ok, got yoU!

ZiriForEver · 30/09/2023 12:48

I read it that the 2lbs difference is between the OP and the cleaner, not the cleaner weighting twice.

Anyway, I don't see how knowing and not telling is less embarrassing for everyone, than a short info after the first case.

Wrongsideofpennines · 30/09/2023 12:51

Just drop into conversation you got these snazzy new scales and they connect to your phone and you can keep track and it's great. Then she will realise you can see hers too and she can use the other ones if she doesn't want you knowing.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/09/2023 13:07

No don't mention it, just delete her readings

I read it that the OP was politely trying to convey that she was a bit overweight and might be embarrassed if she brought it up. Didn’t think it was meant nastily. Or bragging.

Why do you assume I pay minimum wage?

I'm not even at the house when the cleaners are there. There are radios in two rooms. There's no reason for a cleaner to have acces to my wi- fi. Most people have large data allowances if she wants something else.

The cleaners are not my friends. They are hired to do a job. Currently I use agency cleaners. They haven't asked for my wi fi password and I'm certainly not offering it.

Here's a hint- If you don't like cleaning toilets perhaps don't take a job where that will form a significant part of the work. For some postulating about being "kind" you're showing a sneering attitude for the people who paid you to clean.

You sound just peachy.

Just tell her in a gentle way, she may not have realised it was a Bluetooth one.

We have a WiFi one, it was bought to prove the ridiculous variations in weight my dad was experiencing when DRs wouldn’t believe us. The graphs helped identify when issues started. Was one of the best things we bought to support him at a difficult time.

They usually have multiple user allocation but can be confused if people are a similar weight.

I'm a cleaner. I need WiFi because often the houses I'm in are in locations where reception is rubbish and I want to be online in case of an emergency. I'm usually in a big house by myself. It makes me feel more secure. Or sometimes I listen to the radio on my phone whilst I'm ironing. It's not because I'm messing about on Instagram instead of working.

User3735 · 30/09/2023 15:45

This made me laugh because when I was a cleaner I liked to weigh myself on people's scales but daren't if they were digital incase this exact thing happened. If it was me, I wouldn't want to be told, I'd be mortified. Not for them knowing my weight, but for being an inconvenience/caught using something of theirs even though I'm sure everyone I cleaned for wouldn't mind.
