Sophie Turner files child abduction case against Joe Jonas

It is being reported this morning that Sophie Turner is suing Joe Jonas, demanding that the children be returned to the U.K. (where they had been residing).

It had been agreed the children could spend time with their father in New York, and he is refusing to give their passports to her.

How awful for the children. People often seem to forget when they get divorced that their children aren’t pawns in a game.

@SunshineHello this is none of your business and he may have legitimate reasons for doing that.
You don't know.
It's nothing to do with you and gossiping about people you have never met (I assume) is pathetic.

Seems it is the start of a residency battle. Will the kids be considered US or UK residents? It seems they lived primarily in the USA until April 2023 when they spent a few consecutive months in the UK

One parent has to have the passports. I am not sure how she can say he abducted them and brough them to the US and is holding their passports when she wants to get their passports and take them to the UK - exact same thing! Both knew where their kids were. This wasn't an abduction and the kids have been with him on tour since the start of August.

International custody battles are always complicated as there just isn't an easy way. In this case both parents are wealthy and can fly back and forth but the issue will be primary residency. One parent has to 'lose' and kids have to end up with one parent in another country.

SpaceRaiders · 22/09/2023 10:35

If the children habitually reside in the US she’d have no right to remove them without a judge formally approving it, this is perhaps why the passports are being withheld.

AlienatedChildGrown · 22/09/2023 10:37

If you have legitimate reasons for not wanting your children to return to their country of residence you get a lawyer and take your legitimate reasons before a judge.

What you don’t do (particularly if so rich that fast, efficient & motivated legal routes are tat your disposal) is hide the kids’ passports and thwart the other parent’s known plans to return with the children to their home.

It’s a minefield when you have children with a spouse from another country and the marriage goes bent. Most people don’t think about it before they jump in with both feet because they don’t realise the potential pitfalls. But once you do realise, you have to quickly get yourself up to speed with reality and learn to live with it. If you don’t you can end up in the kind of mess that really screws with your kids lives and futures. Because things can get even more acrimonious, very fast, when national boarders are added into the usual relationship breakdown mire.

I think you’ve forgotten you are on a chat forum where people discuss all sorts of subjects including celebrities. If you want to NOT discuss subjects like this you might want to switch the internet off 🥴

You ok? Having a bad day?

Throwncrumbs · 22/09/2023 10:39

I always thought the Jonas bros to be really odd. She found out to late that she’s married into a strange family imo

If you aren’t interested in this topic, maybe try a different thread?

I think it depends where the DCs were born and reside.

I cannot leave this country (Spain) with DD without permission. It would be abduction. You cannot withold passports.

SunshineHello · 22/09/2023 10:42

@saffronsoup the real losers here are the children of course, not the parents.

@RudsyFarmer yes but I know what these threads will get like (he will be called a bastard, she won't...blah blah blah). when we know nothing about what they are actually like.
Their children may in a decade or so time be googling their names and end up reading a load of nonsense speculation that wasn't true.

The question is: what is their country of residence?

They lived in the USA until this past spring. In April, they sold their Miami house and bought a home in the UK and seemed to be intending to move to the UK. The kids were in the UK from April / May through July / early August. For the last two months they have been on tour with their dad at least some if not all of the time - outside the UK.

It isn't clear if they have spent enough time in the UK for it to be their country of residence.

Needmorelego · 22/09/2023 10:44

@SunshineHello yes...I can avoid this thread.
Just think though if this was you and your family and this was school gate gossip.
Wouldn't be very nice then would it?

anonanon12345 · 22/09/2023 10:44

They have bought a house in the UK (not completed on it yet) and it sounds like had clear plans to settle in the UK. And he's now backtracking on it. I gather that's why she's pushing. According to the media.

Needmorelego · 22/09/2023 10:45

@ReeseWitherfork I am fine today thanks 🙂

SherbetLemonn · 22/09/2023 10:46

Poor kids. They’re so wee and this is going to be such a shitshow.

It seems the marriage pretty much blew up overnight, which sounds like an affair or a major incident. Backtracking makes sense when divorce comes into play. You don't stick to your same plans.

Voraxaraptor · 22/09/2023 10:49

They bought a house in the uk and were preparing to move there. The girls are dual citizens and have spent a lot of their life in England, they are registered at doctors and dentists here for routine care.

joe tactically filed for divorce, unawares to her (she found out via the media) whilst the kids were in his care and she was working. He then launches a campaign to declare her a party girl and an unfit mother. Whilst she was working, she was sorting out their new home they were ready to move into.

sophie is not using her children as pawns. What a stupid take.

SunshineHello · 22/09/2023 10:51

@Voraxaraptor he is using his children as pawns by refusing to hand over their passports and so trapping them in the US.

I haven’t criticised her. If my ex refused to give me my children’s passports I would do the same as her.

Doesn't mean it’s not a complete shit show for the children.

I think you are overthinking. Best advice i can give you is to hide any thread you find triggering. Then it all goes away.

This is tabloid fodder, not facts.

According to Jonas's lawyer, there is a court order from Sept 6th that the girls are not be relocated pending the next court decision. The kids have been with both parents these last few weeks in the USA.

This is all a lot of legal manouvering about residency and will need to be worked out in the courts. It isn't even really about Jonas and Turner.

@Motnight been here a while 🤣
I just see some of these celeb gossip threads get really nasty.

Its not something that would necessarily cross peoples minds. You’d find yourself either trapped in a different country far from your support system or leaving your child behind. I think it’s somewhat rare that a court would allow a child to leave jurisdiction, so she’s already starting at a disadvantage. The same happened with Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko. I think he ended up having custody and she moved back to the US.

GuinnessBird · 22/09/2023 10:58

Unfortunately withholding passports and establishing residency are just part of the process and likely recommended by his attorneys. It’s an awful situation really made worse that there isn’t really going to be a solution that works for both parents,
