Dog just killed my cat

IroningThrone · 19/09/2023 23:30

Heard a commotion in my back garden and stepped out to see a young lad dragging his dog off something in my back garden. He went over the fence and my beautiful little cat was lying dead on the grass. I'm in absolute bits, can't stop crying. I got her as a little rescue kitten ten years ago and she's been with me through so much life stuff. Have a crime number from the police, have no idea how I'm going to tell my family. I don't even know how the dog got into my garden because I have talk fences and a locked gate. Ir doesn't feel real and I just want to give her a cuddle and make her wake up

So sad for you. You gave her a lovely significant life.

therealcookiemonster · 20/09/2023 05:50

I'm so sorry! that's absolutely awful.

Stupendousseptember · 20/09/2023 05:57

But the police understand this was your garden? And there is a dead kitty and damaged fence

I’m so sorry, that’s awful. We lost our beautiful boy last year when he was knocked over and it’s heartbreaking.

GoryBory · 20/09/2023 06:23

Oh no how awful and traumatic for you!

What a beautiful cat ❤️ and I’m so sorry for your loss 💐

Some dogs will have this built in them and it may have been that it was in the garden and it somehow escaped before he could grab it.
Greyhound type dogs have been known to scale fences to get to their prey and my aunt lived next door to a jack russel that dug under the fence and broke into a rabbit hutch.

So although it’s so awful, you did absolutely nothing wrong and there was no way you could have predicted this or do anything to stop it.
You gave her love and freedom, which you should never feel guilty about.

I am truly sorry you’ve lost your cat and losing a pet in any circumstances is hard but this must be awful.
I would consider some counselling if you need it.

💐💐

Zanatdy · 20/09/2023 06:24

Oh that’s awful, I’m so sorry, what a horrible traumatic experience for you. I’d keep an eye out locally for this guy perhaps walking his dog. Disgusting he didn’t knock on the door at least and apologise and explain what happened. I don’t think it would be classed as a crime as such, with it being animal and animal. So upsetting and I would feel equally bereft.

Tonight1 · 20/09/2023 06:35

Blue Cross are brilliant for much loved pet counselling.

Obviously you're not going to be OK this morning but thinking of you and wishing all the best 🐾

chipshopElvis · 20/09/2023 06:39

I'm so sorry for your loss. This happened to my cat and it's horrific.

It's not your fault, not something that you could have predicted and I imagine that your lovely cat had a fabulous life with you and would have been unhappy without garden access.

I'm afraid that the police won't do anything unless the dog hurts another dog or a person. We later found that the dog which killed our lovely boy had killed 5 other local cats. It wasn't until it smashed through a neighbours fence and attacked their dog that the police could act. It's really not fair.

Fuckitydoodah · 20/09/2023 06:48

How horrific. I'm so sorry this has happened to your darling cat.

If it's a lurcher type dog, they have a very high prey drive. It should be muzzled when out.

It's awful enough as it is, I really hope it wasn't deliberately set upon your cat.

If you have a local Facebook page I'd put a post on there describing the dog and the lad. Someone might know who he is.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 20/09/2023 06:49

I'm so so sorry. This is heartbreaking. Sending you hugs.

Reallybadidea · 20/09/2023 06:53

We are not all in a room though.

You came on to a thread that the OP started because she's devastated about her cat, you CHOSE to make those comments. What thought process did you go through to make that choice?

Enderunicorn · 20/09/2023 06:58

I'm so sorry I can't imagine how much it hurts. Definitely post on local fb. Something similar happened locally recently with a Bully XL mauling another dog to death and someone came forward with the name of owner to give to police.

So sorry to hear how you lost your beloved pet in such a horrible way. Sending you hugs.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/09/2023 07:06

I am so very sorry for the loss of your beautiful kitty, OP. You really did nothing wrong at all.

Honestly if I had a dog that killed another animal, I would have it put to sleep, I would feel so bad about it. Once they kill, they're likely to do it again. Dogs should be kept on the leash when out walking.

Alwaysdieting · 20/09/2023 07:09

Im so sorry for you and your lovely girl.😢

ZickZack · 20/09/2023 07:11

I'm so sorry, op. Beautiful cat.

DoubleTime · 20/09/2023 07:22

Oh OP I am so, so sorry. I have a rescue cat too, I think I can imagine how shocked and heartbroken you must feel.

hattie43 · 20/09/2023 07:29

Appalling , what an awful thing to happen . I'm so so sorry .

DietStartsM0NDAY · 20/09/2023 07:42

So sorry for your loss in such horrendous circumstances. She was very lucky to have you as her owner and you did not do anything wrong at all.
So traumatising for you. Flowers

I'm so very sorry OP.

Unless I've misunderstood, the boy and dog left your garden by going over the fence into your neighbours garden?

Could the dog have been in that neighbours garden before the attack? Does the other side of your garden exit into public area?

I'd go to your neighbours first - they either know who he is, or they've had an intrusion into their garden - how did he get out of their garden?

Flowers for you and your lovely cat 🐈

Dinobooklover · 20/09/2023 09:13

Oh OP. I'm so sorry 💔 💐

The Blue Cross bereavement service is fantastic. I've called them before after a traumatic pet death and just sobbed down the phone. they were brilliant.

So sorry. I live next to some ape with these type of dogs which he keeps in cages, and it's a constant fear of mine. The police need to take this seriously, this dog needs to be destroyed before it harms a human or another animal. Or at the very least removed from the twat of an owner who cannot control it.
