Dog just killed my cat

IroningThrone · 19/09/2023 23:30

Heard a commotion in my back garden and stepped out to see a young lad dragging his dog off something in my back garden. He went over the fence and my beautiful little cat was lying dead on the grass. I'm in absolute bits, can't stop crying. I got her as a little rescue kitten ten years ago and she's been with me through so much life stuff. Have a crime number from the police, have no idea how I'm going to tell my family. I don't even know how the dog got into my garden because I have talk fences and a locked gate. Ir doesn't feel real and I just want to give her a cuddle and make her wake up

I am so sorry. Flowers I have dogs but totally agree that some dogs should be muzzled. There’s no excuse for killing another animal like this.

My first ever dog was a Lurcher- I never let her chase cats , ever .
A Lurcher who is likely to chase cats ( and the owners WILL KNOW if their dog is a cat chaser )
should muzzle it while walking if they are incapable of holding their dog if it sees a cat.

No one should have their beloved cat killed by a dog.

There are too many shitty dog owners about who are grossly irresponsible.

As regards fences-
a plastic trellis type fence ( netting) is actually quite hard for dogs to jump up as it’s hard to gain a foothold.
Solid fences can be “Run up” but still can’t see how this dog was able to exit if the fence was strong.

There may have been a weak panel somewhere (?)
Dog should have been leashed at the very least.

Iheartlibrarians · 20/09/2023 01:54

I'm so sorry and have shed a tear for you too. It was not your fault- pet cats are supposed to be able to go outside.

We lost my childhood cat to a fox and that was shocking enough; of course a dog is supposed to be able to live side by side with other pets.

Just remember she had a wonderful life with you, which is more than so many animals get.

Here's my beautiful girl

She’s beautiful.
I’m so sorry

A six foot strong fence and locked gate?

What more could you do -

The dog owner completely at fault.

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/09/2023 02:07

How old do you think the lad was?

I cant help thinking that if the dog got away from him, he shouldnt have been walking it alone, so he is no more to blame than you are for letting your cat out into your secure garden. The ones to blame are the adult owners of the dog who allowed a young lad who isnt strong enough to control a clearly untrained dog to walk him.

I cant imagine that the lad is sleeping too well tonight either. Shit dog owners and shit parents.

I am so sorry that this happened, and I am sure that if he was walked near you, they live near you and you will be able to track down these lazy feckless bastards.

NarniaOrBust · 20/09/2023 02:08

I’m so so sorry. I’ve had this happen to me and it’s horrendous. I didn’t blame the dogs but the owners can rot in hell.

it’s horrible. Not much will lessen the pain. Love to you.

Bigcat25 · 20/09/2023 02:11

So extremely sorry! Your cat is incredibly beautiful and sweet looking. It's not your fault, you're cat enjoyed her life in the garden and this was a freak incident. So weird the boy just took off without saying anything - hope the authorities put down the dog.

MsLavender · 20/09/2023 02:14

I'm so sorry, losing a pet under any circumstances is devastating enough but this must be so traumatising I can't even imagine. She is such a beautiful girl. I hope you get some kind of justice for her.

TorqueWrench · 20/09/2023 02:16

hope the authorities put down the dog.

It's not the dog's fault. It's natural instinct to chase small animals and not, indicative of it being a dangerous animal. The owner should have been in control.

The young lad was probably walking the family dog.

My parents neighbours when we were kids had their beautiful cat, Catkin ( black and white neutered boy, 21 yrs old) killed in their front garden by an off lead German shepherd dog.

It was very traumatic.

Dog owner again a complete incompetent .

Catkin was used to dogs- the family had a Lurcher, even- and he was just asleep in his own garden, minding his own business.

All these years later I still remember the loss of sweet Catkin .

One person’s “ pet” should not kill or injure another pet, child or adult.

merrymelodies · 20/09/2023 02:23

That's horrible and so terribly tragic. Sending ❤️

He was about 18 or 19- he wasn't a child- old enough to be in control of the dog. The police said there's been reports of people deliberately setting dogs on cats in the area which makes me feel utterly sick.

I can't sleep - the bed feels empty without her ☹️☹️

I'm so, so sorry. Years ago my cat got killed on my doorstep by two dogs and it was devastating. You obviously loved your cat and after rescuing her, gave her the best life she could have. You did everything you could do to protect her, including installing a fence that should have been tall enough, but sometimes the unexpected, the outrageous, the awful happens and you can do nothing to stop it. Take care of yourself... focus, if you can on making sure this dog and owner can't do this again to another animal.

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/09/2023 02:41

Oh I'm sorry. It's just I've seen kids locally having their arms dragged off by dogs far stronger than a 10 year old say could cope with.

I apologise.

Nat6999 · 20/09/2023 02:41

Police marksmen have been out in my city today after a dog attacked another dog, his owner picked his dog up & the big dog clamped his jaws round the man's side. I've seen the CCTV & it was horrific. The man managed to walk away & his dog after being dropped when the big dog attacked his owner ran home.

oakleaffy · 20/09/2023 02:42

@IroningThrone Im sadly not surprised by your update.

Anyone walking an off leash dog like that is not being responsible.

I too have heard of thickos who turn their mutts on sweet innocent cats, and it’s absolutely disgusting.

I’m so angry at scrotes like this.

I’d make a fuss on local social media if you can
Highlight this grotesque issue-

Makes one want to have an electric fence to keep out intruders.

Your lovely cat was in her own garden which should be safe.

Losing a much loved pet is terribly painful.

Today I saw an idiot with a Bull breed ( didn’t get close to see if Pitbull or XL Bully
The owner was allowing it to hang by it’s jaws from a tree branch- the dog was twisting about mauling the branch.

What is wrong with these idiots?
We need much tougher laws around dogs in this country

Or the ability to have tools to arm ourselves against these mutts if they go for our loved ones. Or ourselves.

I think that would make most of us feel utterly sick - what kind of person sets out with the intention of hurting someone’s pet, and using their own pet as a weapon to do it? It’s so amoral and disgusting. I’m so sorry, OP.

I do hope that someone in your neighborhood will possibly have Ring doorbell or CCTV footage of the man and his dog, and perhaps catching him will provide answers to a lot of cat attacks, from what the police have said. But if there ARE targeted attacks in your community, I just feel like the police should maybe be warning cat owners and asking people for help catching these horrible bastards.

As I said, I’m just so sorry, OP. As many have said, it wasn’t your fault - six-foot-tall fences and a locked gate is the most anyone could do. And your moggy was truly beautiful. Once your heart has had quite a bit of time to heal and deal with this terrible and unexpected loss, I know it’s hard to even fathom right now, but you’ll know when it’s the right time to give some thought to rescuing again; it sounds like you have a lot of love to give. 💐

True, but if that happened then there should be two scenario’s. 10yo yells for help and OP comes out, 10yo gives relevant details for parents; OR 10yo is in shock/not thinking properly and scarpers home to tell parents who then front up to OP’s front door to profusely apologise and deal with situation.

It’s not just an ‘oh, well they are 10yo’ thing. None of mine at 10yo wouldn’t have done either of the above, some would have gone scenario 1 and some would have gone scenario 2. Mind you, I would never have let a 10yo out with an animal they couldn’t control.

Mollymalone123 · 20/09/2023 03:18

So very sorry on the loss of your beautiful cat.None of this is your fault and your cat should have been perfectly safe in your garden.Absolutely tragic and not anything you could have done to prevent it.Xx

TorqueWrench · 20/09/2023 03:30

Sadly I think it's unlikely they'll come forward, not least because they know many people will want their dog dead.

WiddlinDiddlin · 20/09/2023 04:43

I am very sorry for your loss, thjs is absolutely not your fault.

Possibly the dog jumped the fence, many lurchers are easily capable of that and even some smaller dogs (I had a terrier x that could easily scale a 6ft fence!).

Or... horribly... was chucked over on purpose and there are people who will do that.

I'd ask neighbours if there is any ring doorbell footage up and down the street that may have caught him.

And local groups, description of him and the dog.

The police are likely to do very little unless it appears to have been intentional, its not an illegal breed, its not an offence against a person and whilst arguably the dog was 'out of control in a public place' you don't have footage yet (which is why its important to get it).

This sort of thing does happen accidentally - but when it does, responsible people take responsibility for their animals, not run away!

LukesDiner · 20/09/2023 05:04

I'm so sorry for your loss. That's just such sad news.

Woollymonster · 20/09/2023 05:22

I’m so sorry OP. You must feel totally traumatised.
Your little cat looks lovely. Look after yourself.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 20/09/2023 05:23

How horrific for you all. So sorry for the loss of your precious girl. 💔☹️🌈
