Dog just killed my cat

Heard a commotion in my back garden and stepped out to see a young lad dragging his dog off something in my back garden. He went over the fence and my beautiful little cat was lying dead on the grass. I'm in absolute bits, can't stop crying. I got her as a little rescue kitten ten years ago and she's been with me through so much life stuff. Have a crime number from the police, have no idea how I'm going to tell my family. I don't even know how the dog got into my garden because I have talk fences and a locked gate. Ir doesn't feel real and I just want to give her a cuddle and make her wake up

@SamW98 god that's awful. Such scummy behaviour.

There's not actually an epidemic of French bulldogs, pugs, and English bulldogs attacking people though. They feature far less commonly in bites/fatalities than a lot of more popular 'family' breeds.

I think it needs to be a bit more specific and somehow target dangerous dogs.

By "family" breeds you must be referring to SBT and XL Bullies as these are the ones doing the majority of the killing.

There were the occasional Rottweiler and GSD, but otherwise its the Bull breeds that head the table of death by dog.

Why on earth would you assume I'm saying XL Bullies are family dogs?

I'm saying that some bull breeds like pugs and French/English bullldogs attack far less than other breeds considered family dogs. For example, the UK Kennel Club has previously stated that the labrador is responsible for the most claims related to having been attacked.

I think a widespread ban covering non problematic dogs isn't the solution. Better to ban specific breeds.

"The XL Bully is dangerous so let's ban pugs" is not a logical response.

This happened to my beautiful cat 3 years ago in our front garden and it was so traumatising. It was a greyhound that got ours. Our cat was in and out of consciousness and we rushed him to the vet but his pelvis was completely shattered and he had to be put sleep there and then.

It was honestly one of the most horrific and saddest days of my life. I find it really hard to think about and have to block it out of my head.

Sorry you’ve had to go through this too OP 😢

Please put an appeal for information , contact your neighbours too . Your cat looks like my girl , I lost her 6 months ago too , she was also a rescue and 10 years old , she got hit by a car in por drive , we think it was the postman or a Amazon driver as nobody come this way ( we live very rural ) . I miss her terribly , she was the best cat

Beautiful cat. So sorry for your loss.

My brother lost his cat after being hit by a car- the cowardly driver didn't even stop.
He has two cats now that are strictly house cats- because of the trauma of losing his old cat.

Roads {or rather vehicles} are so dangerous to cats~ no matter where one lives.

So sorry OP such an traumatic thing to witness, your poor beautiful girl 😪

Pleas be kind to yourself as It wasn't your fault at all most pet cats roam, the dog likely saw your cat either wandering just outside your garden or sitting on the fence and followed it into your garden as greyhound/lurchers hunt by sight not scent. Some dogs can jump or climb over most high fences unless have angled top/slippy roller to stop them, but often need some motivation to even try which has caught people out with a new dog.

The lad should've at least apologised to you even if he panicked and went to secure the dog first, he could've returned. If it was genuinely an accident that the dog got loose or escaped a neighbouring garden I'm sure he would have explained and felt dreadful about it happening.

I can understand you'll be angry with the dog that's a natural reaction but it doesn't mean they're aggressive in general or would harm people like some posters think, most dogs will chase cats as have same hunting instincts that leads cats to chase mice etc but sighthounds were bred to have advantage of speed over other breeds so are unfortunately more likely to be able to catch if they are allowed the opportunity. Sadly you've all been let down by the dog owners failings here.

Sorry, too literal. I am ND.

It wasn't literal, it was horribly unkind, insensitive, unfeeling and plain nasty. Like many others (I suspect) I reported your post. Stop making excuses- there are none. Most unkind post I have ever read on MNet.

OP says it was a ''Lurcher type'' dog.

There are now ''Bull Lurchers'' about that even I {as a past Lurcher owner } would give a hard pass to.

Lurchers come in all different shapes and sizes, dependent on the ''Cross'' that's gone into them.

They are essentially a 'Sighthound' that chases things that move fast - this is hardwired into them. But add ''Bull'' genes, and they become much more hard mouthed.

Usually a cat will be able to defend itself by deploying her claws- but not against a powerful dog she couldn't

That dog sounds like a practiced cat attacker. Dog owner completely to blame.

A Lurcher {like any dog} should always be on a lead around roads and people's homes where cats are likely to be.

People who own out of control dogs are breaking the law- this dog who killed @IroningThrone young cat was dangerously out of control - as PP have said, maybe neighbours with 'Ring' doorbells can help.

Very likely the dog concerned will have scars on it's face and muzzle from prior attacks where a cat has tried to defend itself.

Can we not tar bully mixes just because you don't like them when may not even have been one involved .

My bull lurcher was a fabulous dog, smart and fairly obedient for a sighthound as more people orientated and gave love by the shovelful which actually seems common traits in bull lurchers. Prey drive about average in sighthounds except she was slower runner being a heavier build and more distractible with bribes of food. She wouldn't have been described as cat friendly when I adopted her and this isn't even my cat, it's a stray that just decided he loved her and would join us on walks
Had some cow and sheep friends too.

So sorry for your loss. Remember those ten years of companionship. She looked like a lovely little cat.

My rescue mogs are basically indoor cats now, hope to have a catio built soon, after an awful ‘accident’ took one of our beloved cats from us. We can’t face letting them roam.

You did nothing wrong, it sounds like you had created a lovely garden for her.
