Dog just killed my cat

IroningThrone · 19/09/2023 23:30

Heard a commotion in my back garden and stepped out to see a young lad dragging his dog off something in my back garden. He went over the fence and my beautiful little cat was lying dead on the grass. I'm in absolute bits, can't stop crying. I got her as a little rescue kitten ten years ago and she's been with me through so much life stuff. Have a crime number from the police, have no idea how I'm going to tell my family. I don't even know how the dog got into my garden because I have talk fences and a locked gate. Ir doesn't feel real and I just want to give her a cuddle and make her wake up

Oh what a sweet girl OP. I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you're not alone at home. Call someone to come over. You'll be in shock. What an awful thing to have happened.

Worrying some owners saying their dogs can jump 6ft fences. Are we not even safe with our kids in our own gardens or fenced in locked spaces? What if it was a toddler? Or a baby in a buggy? How on earth can we as a society be in a place where dog owners can let these things happen?

It was a lurcher type dog.. so a sighthound mix. Known for having a prey drive against small furries. It is literally bred into them. It does not make them dangerous to humans or children, so don't be so melodramrtic.
But then you do post on all dog threads about how pet dogs should not exist anyway so...

Glitterybee · 20/09/2023 00:50

wise up.

Lurcher/greyhound type dogs are the most loving creatures ever. It’s their natural instinct to chase and kill small furry things not humans.

@Boomboom22 As far as I know lurchers have never been responsible for a human death, and they don't have the type of aggression that would make them jump a 6ft fence for a human, they only have prey drive/aggression towards small furry animals. They're probably the only dog that will do a 6ft fence easily, apart from a malinois.

im sorry for your loss OP, that’s horrific 😓

Not blaming the dog, just the owner.

I am sorry for your loss. I've just posted on another thread that I think that these days all dogs, even toy breeds, should wear a muzzle in public. On your own secure premises you can do what you like with your dog. If this was law, and it was followed, your poor cat would still be alive. And without minimising your loss, that could have been a child that was attacked.

That’s horrible OP, what an awful sight to see.

I agree muzzles are needed for all dogs at this point and I assume this dog was off leash too which was part of the problem.

Sadly the case.

My old boss was dogsitting an elderly greyhound and let it off the lead in an enclosed field. It chased and killed a cat that appeared out of the long grass. She was mortified!

I'm so sorry OP, she's such a pretty girl 💐💐💐

Oh God I'm so sorry, this has broken my heart. I cannot imagine how you must be feeling!! Our pets are family just another soul in a different body. You poor thing ♥️

Liquorish · 20/09/2023 01:09

So sorry for the loss of your sweet girl. You are not to blame in any way. Cats should be safe in their own garden. There’s no excuse not to keep an eye if your dog can easily escape and enter other gardens. It should have been on a lead.

Sorry, too literal. I am ND.

So am I. Doesn't give either of us license to be fuckwits.

OP, I am so sorry about your lovely wee girl. She reminds me of my darling girl, and I cannot begin to imagine your devastation.

Bleuuuughhh · 20/09/2023 01:25

Most Sighthounds are after small furry animals. Your children are safe.

MartinChuzzlewit · 20/09/2023 01:27

Oh OP I’m so so sorry about your cat she was absolutely gorgeous.

You need to find the beast that did this - it will do it again and you need to stop the irresponsible owner who is allowing his mutt to murder

Topseyt123 · 20/09/2023 01:29

That's awful. I am so sorry. 😥

A bit OTT. It was a lurcher and many have a strong prey drive for small furries.
It did not "murder" a cat, any more than a cat would "murder" a wild bird.

IroningThrone · 19/09/2023 23:37

He never said anything. I just saw him drag the dog off and climb over the fence into next doors garden. Was a black lurcher type dog. I have six foot fences so I have no idea why or how he was in my garden. Dog wasn't on a lead so maybe it smelled her and jumped the fence. Can it do that?

@IroningThrone I’m
so so sorry

What an horrendous thing to have happened
just unbearable.

I can’t see how this dog could have seen your cat if she was behind a six foot fence?

Sadly some Lurchers are completely cat aggressive- and can jump high fences- they sort of scurry up them
Have seen Lurcher high jump competitions at country shows many years ago.

The owner’s an utter Scrote- he probably encouraged the cat in the past-

Lurchers that are cat aggressive should be muzzled.

He would KNOW it’s a danger to cats

the Scrote probably let it off leash.

It was not your fault.

Horrendous thing to have happen.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/09/2023 01:35

I am so sorry. Flowers I have dogs but totally agree that some dogs should be muzzled. There’s no excuse for killing another animal like this.

Namechange20100 · 20/09/2023 01:37

So so so sorry for your poor precious baby ❤️ how awful for you. Sending strength and love xx

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 20/09/2023 01:41

Im so sorry for your loss. Maybe post the description of the dog and man on your local facebook group and see if anyone can identify them. If you have the name and address you can report to your local council. ❤

We are not all in a room though.

But most of us are essentially good people.

The bullies don't count.
