Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 9).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

You could always tell it was urology day as you walked past theatres, due to the smell of fried (lasered) prostate gland.

Gosh, that sounds mouth-watering! Like tripe - allegedly delicious, if you can only get the fork past your nose.

duc748 · 30/09/2023 22:22

Doing wonders for nurse recruitment there, Mavis! 😁

I don’t know why anyone would want to do their nurse training these days. Paying for the privilege of working on the wards, being a student but without the long holidays, and down here in the southwest sometimes travelling HUNDREDS of miles between clinical placements. It’s insane.

duc748 · 30/09/2023 23:17

Of course, being serious, I'm sure you're right. Why can't we put money into things that matter?

Fried prostate… my olfactory bulb would shatter.

I was keen to train in histopathology until somebody warned me about the smells. Not sure how I feel about teratomas either.

MouseMinge · 01/10/2023 00:45

I've been watching Glow on Netflix and got to the end of Season Three this evening. And that's it. There is no proper ending because there was supposed to be a Season Four but COVID came along and postponed filming and then it got cancelled. I feel cheated. Not as cheated as when they cancelled The OA which left me bloody gutted. The bastards.

I had a patient with a teratoma in their lung. It contained teeny tiny teeth, you could see them on the scan.

That is both incredibly cool and incredibly gross Grin

It’s a smell unlike any other. It would concern anyone who did it, specially trained nose or not.

Did you know that nurses used to taste patients’ urine to detect diabetes? Before my time, thankfully.

My dad once related a story in a medical magazine about somewhere in Africa where people would take a urine sample to the village wise woman and she'd pour a bit onto a flat stone and then watch to see how many ants were attracted.

"Did you know that nurses used to taste patients’ urine to detect diabetes? Before my time, thankfully."

@MavisMcMinty There's a lecture by a consultant on yt somewhere where he demonstrates this. He had a young woman go behind a screen and pee into a beaker, then he dipped in a finger and sucked it and passed the beaker to the 20 or so students for them to do the same. When he got the slightly depleted beaker back, he explained that the correct protocol was to dip with you little finger and suck your index finger. Bastard.

CyanCrystalViolet · 01/10/2023 10:08

Dermoid cysts contain hair, skin and teeth too.

@angelico53 I read that as ‘central character to the plot’!

Gonners · 01/10/2023 18:22

@angelico53 Anyone read The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman, a book where a teratoma is central to the plot?

Yes, but not for 25 or 30 years. I do vaguely remember something weird that I'd never heard of, so thanks for the reminder. I'd quite like to revisit that trilogy, but none of the books are available from Kent Libraries - though obviously they have a squillion copies of Captain Corelli, which has probably made the GCSE syllabus by now! Maybe I'll cough up for the e-books.

MavisMcMinty · 01/10/2023 18:29

Well! I just rang my Dad, and he mentioned his kinda girlfriend A has given him Helen Joyce’s Trans to read! So I said that’s what I’m currently reading, and asked him to congratulate A, and tell her I’m in the gang too.

He thinks gender theory is insane regressive bonkers, hooray for great Dads everywhere!

MavisMcMinty · 01/10/2023 20:13

I have just taken my beef brisket out of the bottom of the Aga, where’s it’s been slow/pot roasting since 14.00. I have also uncorked one of the endless bottles of red wine courtesy of my Dad’s 3x a year Wine Society cases - it’s lovely, rich yet mellow (I am not a great describer of wine, “nice” or “not nice” is about the extent of it.) And still have the Strictly Results to watch (no spoilers please)!

Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”
MavisMcMinty · 01/10/2023 20:14

Oh! Obviously the tea strainer is to keep the wine flies out.

CyanCrystalViolet · 01/10/2023 20:30

That sounds fabulous, @MavisMcMinty. I had some beef brisket with bijoux lentils and cabbage from the freezer last night.

MouseMinge · 01/10/2023 21:05

I have ice cream and that means my horrid oesophagus will feel a little better tonight. A friend has just put "ice cream money" into my account which is so sweet. Tomorrow I'm going to buy as much of the Jude's vanilla ice cream as they have left in Morrison's because it's currently half price which is insane!

Hope you enjoy/enjoyed the results show, Mavis. I'm looking forward to the numbers decreasing because there are too many people in it right now and I keep forgetting who's who and some people completely slip from my mind even though I quite like them.

Britinme · 01/10/2023 21:31

I don't think Strictly is on streaming anywhere is it? I could fire up the VPN and watch it on my computer but I prefer to watch it on the TV.

Bake-Off doesn't stream until Fridays on Netflix, so I did manage to watch the first episode of the new season on Friday.

CyanCrystalViolet · 01/10/2023 23:03

Did anyone watch the first ep of the new Ripper drama on ITV? I was expecting trash but I thought it was actually rather good.

CyanCrystalViolet · 02/10/2023 00:34

I’m sure I’ve seen that house in my nightmares.

MouseMinge · 02/10/2023 02:09

I did, @CyanCrystalViolet and agree. I think it's going to get more distressing with George Old-whatever taking the lead on the case

MouseMinge · 02/10/2023 02:18

I have stairs and landings nightmares, usually more messed up than that but who on earth thought any of that nightmare was appropriate. It's a lovely house on the outside but that stairs issue make it a safety hazard and the weird column arch thing in one of the living areas is just a whole lot of interior design nightmare.

Kucinghitam · 02/10/2023 09:38

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 02/10/2023 00:15

The interior design by itself is hideous enough to be a migraine trigger! So if the stairs and landing don't kill you, the carpets will melt your eyeballs out of your head Grin

MmePoppySeedDefage · 02/10/2023 13:17

Heh. It's hideous and frightening - quite a combination.
