Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 9).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Loving the afterlife thread!

Tricyrtis2022 · 17/11/2023 17:25

Love it, really entertaining. Weird that some posters are taking it so seriously, though.

The thread is hilarious. Trying to figure out the logistics is a thankless task. I remember when I was younger and still sort of believed that there was an afterlife I worried about being watched on the loo and the whole having sex thing. If you believe in heaven and you think about it too much it will drive you pure mental.

MouseMinge · 17/11/2023 19:28

Something for you all to laugh at. I was today years old when I discovered that there are wild hamsters that are native to Europe. I'd clearly got them confused with guinea pigs and thought that all hamsters came from South America if I'd given it any thought at all. If someone had told me you could see them frolicking around Europe I'd have laughed at them. The joke's on me.

Britinme · 17/11/2023 19:28

I was also today years old.

MouseMinge · 17/11/2023 20:23

Here's the thing, @Britinme about half an hour ago I remembered Hammy the Hamster in Tales from the Riverbank. I think Johnny Morris did all the voices.

Arf! Even as a very young child (aged 5, at a forces' primary school in Germany) it never occurred to me that it was anything more than fiction. I came home one day and told my parents that "Marjorie Clark" (mysteriously referred to as "he") had come to school and told us a nice story about a donkey. I was completely oblivious to the "Jesus" aspect of the story and it was some time before they met the army chaplain, Padre Clark, and worked out what it had all been about.

artant · 17/11/2023 21:50

I’ve never given the existence of wild hamsters in Europe any thought at all so count me among those who were today years old discovering this.

Tricyrtis2022 · 18/11/2023 09:01

The origin of hamsters has never crossed my mind until today. I'd like to see them frolicking in the wild.

MouseMinge · 18/11/2023 10:52

@Gonners when your upbringing is full RC the likelihood is you believe at least a little bit. As a small child, "knowing" that hell was down below I used to worry that the devil would bite my bum when I was having a pee. A poo was safe because he wouldn't want to risk poo in his mouth.

VictorianBigot · 18/11/2023 11:17

I too remember worrying God and people in heaven would look down on me and see me on the loo.

My school was quite religious and I went to Sunday school on top. I hated the crucifix, all I could think about was how it would feel to have nails hammered through my hands. I was very disturbed by it all.

WRT to hamsters, I knew they were a thing in Europe after seeing a video of them stuffing their mouths and frolicking in tall grass. I was also surprised!

Gonners · 18/11/2023 20:19

Argh @VictorianBigot "My school was quite religious and I went to Sunday school on top. I hated the crucifix, all I could think about was how it would feel to have nails hammered through my hands. I was very disturbed by it all."

How awful. As a small child I took the whole thing to be fiction (encouraged by my dad) and mostly dull fiction at that. This didn't come home to roost until my first year at grammar school, when there was an RE exam in which I came an impressive last out of a class of about 25. I had just tuned out and daydreamed through the lessons. Bizarrely, RE marks turned out not to "count" in the all-important class positions, so I got the class prize and the unfortunate little boy who had come top in RE (and would otherwise have "won" some random book) cried. I still feel a bit bad about that.

MouseMinge · 19/11/2023 01:08

Being a catlick helped in RE O level. I got an A. My headmistress wanted me to do it at A level but I declined. Looking back I should have because it would have been a relatively easy pass with possibly a decent grade to boot.

MouseMinge · 19/11/2023 01:16

In health news. Yesterday was the first feed I've had where I didn't feel sick throughout and didn't have pain. Also yesterday I got a course of steroids because my asthma isn't behaving. (I took them after the feed) Today I woke up with a bit more energy and it was a bit easier to swallow my daily meds including the steroids. Later I had some not entirely watery soup and could really taste the flavours. My best day since the op. I'm also really happy that the steroids will help me with the exercise bike test next week. Everything is on the up!

Also, that AMA 4 year old child thread is glorious.

Is there a new TalkLair thread yet?

artant · 19/11/2023 14:57

That all sounds so positive, mouse, excellent news!
