One utterly unnecessary thing you really want.

Mine is a tiara - not necessarily an expensive one - costume jewellery really - but I would never have an occasion to wear one, and as I have a face like a homely potato, I’d look ridiculous in one. But I still get that little yearning, if I see one on FB or Etsy.

A fancy cable cardigan in a lovely tweed yarn. Utterly unnecessary because I have ten jumpers and cardigans I made and barely room to store them, and have other projects hibernating, but I ordered yarn (can't get the sort I want in a colour I like in Australia, grrr) and a not-cheap-but-beautiful pattern from Ravelry. Pure indulgence, I just hope I like the colour!

UsefulSmartPrettyHappy · 16/10/2023 12:06

Actually, I think I would rather have a proper Slush Puppie maker, over a new telly. Grin

EliosBackPack · 16/10/2023 12:45

Number One on my Wishlist - an antique Cartier Tank Watch.

JaneFarrier · 17/10/2023 12:27

@WheekWheekWheek that sounds like the dream. I really miss having guinea pigs and capybaras seem so friendly! I gather they get through an eyewatering amount of forage in captivity though...

ThreeBearsPorridge · 17/10/2023 12:34

A big diamond ring. Preferably art deco.

WineAndFireside · 17/10/2023 13:29

A spiral staircase in black iron. I've always wanted one, but I have dogs and children.

I would love at least three or four pet Capybaras and a big pool for them to wallow in. Like those heated thermal spring pools they have for them in Japanese zoos. I would take them for walls on a harness and house train them. People would tell me they like my dog and what breed is it ? I would just grin to myself. I expect my guinea pigs would enjoy having their big "cousins" around!

Oooh can I come and visit them? I love capybaras so much.

I'm not saying this is actually Mumsnet's fault.
@LittleBrownJug but possibly it might be.

@nearlywinteragain Squeee!

ALongHardWinter · 22/10/2023 02:20

A horse.

Trillie · 22/10/2023 02:30

I think you should buy one and wear it around the house if there’s nowhere else to wear it, life’s too short not to own a tiara if you want one

Unabletomitigate · 22/10/2023 07:02

A ridiculously expensive sewing machine, the one I want is 11,000. I can't even sew a straught line with my current machine, but if I had the fancy one.....

There was a gorgeous, friendly Birman living near me. He'd come and talk to people waiting at the bus stop. Unfortunately, the family have moved away (and taken him with them)

A painting that I saw yesterday of a windswept pony. But at 7k its not happening!

One of those gloves that opens up and has a bottle of whiskey and 6 glasses inside. Looks really naff but I would love one. I have no room for it but I can dream!

Guess how I found this thread… 😂😂

I really want one as well. It’s completely unnecessary but it’s on my list for our living room 😃😃😇😇

DilemmaDelilah · 28/02/2024 11:21

A proper (diamond) engagement ring. We were engaged for a couple of years before we married, but kept it quiet as it happened just after my sister got engaged and then she didn't get married for ages! We then arranged our wedding in a hurry as we wanted to get married before my mother died (unexpected terminal cancer diagnosis) and didn't have the money for a proper ring. In fact I actually bought it myself.

It's ridiculous as I am 63 and have cancer myself.. but I still want one.

I totally get it. I found one recently I adore but it’s £10,00! I just can’t justify that. We were very poor when we got engaged and eventually I lost the ring . I’ve always wanted a proper diamond !

A couple of years ago I saw a 7ft tall plush giraffe in the front window of TK Maxx just before Christmas. It was about £250.
DH had already bought my Christmas present, so I thought I'd better just leave it. Oh, the regret!

I still long for a huge giraffe in my house.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/02/2024 12:10

This thread came up in conversation with ds1 and his wife, ages ago, and they remembered it and got me a sparkly headband type tiara for my birthday last year! I almost cried.

I have enjoyed this thread very much and have added loads of things to my list.
I would also say that over the last 60+ years I have managed to accumulate many of the unnecessary things I really wanted (not the incredibly expensive unattainable things, alas) and they give me enormous pleasure every day.
So, hope you all get a chance to go for it, whatever it is.

Wheeeeee · 28/02/2024 12:59

I've fallen in love with an original painting in a gallery in my city. It's £900. I could afford it, but I can't quite persuade myself that it's ok.

ThreeBearsPorridge · 28/02/2024 13:22

Buy it! It’s gorgeous.
