I joined after procrastinating putting up some curtain tie backs and now I am flying through a massive decluttering exercise. (I need to tackle the loft next, but I may need to sit down (a lot) before I do that 😄).

Hope the tagging works, SoE.

DD and me still have bad cough buy thankfulky no night-time wakeups last night, and DD seems largely unphased by it in the daytimes, unlike myself who could very much do with a new pair of lungs 😅

@Mumtobabyhavoc Glad everyone seems to be on the mend, hopefully I'll be same in a few days time.

Hope I'm not in for the 100 day cough @Peridot1 😬

I actually had quite a productive work day yesterday despite feeling crappy. Not off to such a good start today and have been procrastinating all morning (so easy to do when you work from home!), instead of working, I've washed the dishes, made a cooked breakfast, and read my book... Still plenty of the day left to get back on track though

Tasks for today -

  1. Get some focused work time in
  2. Walk doggo
  3. Quick blitz clean in living room and bedroom
  4. Change sheets
FrostyFogg · 25/01/2024 11:19

@SingleThreadJoiner I had a mum friend who's house was always spotless, but they are few and far between! The rest of us either scurried round cleaning or shoved the grot aside and drank tea while the children played. Most of my big cleans happened before my ex MIL visited.
These days I'm generally fit to receive visitors (even a MIL, if I had one) but I'm yet to achieve the 'once and for all' state of organisation and cleanliness that I have long aspired to. Still working on that. If that time ever comes, I shall reward myself with new carpets downstairs.
I seem to be going via Flylady to Swedish Death Cleaning, which is not as morbid as it sounds. The notion seems to be retire from the job, declutter to make life going forward simpler (and for our young'uns when we are to ancient or dead) and then step forth into the future with a job that add value or some volunteering, and hobbies and such. I can get on board with that.

Today so far I have maintained the basics plus cleaned top of fridge and sorted out medicine/first aid cabinet. And I have done the pantry shelf and set aside some bits for foodbank and some for some soup and a couple of meals. Really happy to have got back into the groove after my post leaving-my-job inertia.

Your day sounds productive @Peridot1

FrostyFogg · 25/01/2024 11:33

Cross posted with @TawnyT I would find WFH very difficult. I never even managed office type work in an actual office. Tried it once and didn't like it! Lasted less than a week 😳 DH on the other hand is exceptional, after years combining office work and being very much out and about (a no day ever the same career) He's used to distraction and disturbance to the extent that he'll have the radio on, and TV on his tablet, as well as the two work screens, otherwise he can't concentrate! Insanity! In the event of having essential paperwork to do, I need complete quiet, and preferably nobody in the house. And a deadline!

Do you you end up having to finish up work in the evenings if you procrastinate a lot @TawnyT and other WFHers? (Seem to be several on here 😊)

SpiritOfEdna · 25/01/2024 13:31

I'm in the only really pristinely tidy when visitors are expected camp so the house was immaculate for sibling's semi retirement do in the summer and then for in between xmas and new year when most of the family were here.

So sorry to hear of on-going sniffles for all and the little ones and parental issues
Today is a very busy day, loads of meetings, some of which are being cancelled at very last minute so all good. (not so good is a production issue...)

I have worked from home since early lockdown, sent home for a practise run and never went back. I was then working for one of the big supermarket chains and now for a US company where all my colleagues are India/States/Europe, so I would be sitting in the office on my own, or with people I don't work with or know. I am good at ignoring what is going on around me. I only need absolute peace and quiet when am presenting something and I do keep stricter 9-5 hours than when in an office. I would often be working till 8 -9 at month end on project finances, and then very long hours when I need to be either on site in warehouse or store :-( and then have a three hour plus drive home from wherever I was. Glad am not doing that now.
Today:

  • got a leg of lamb on simmer for a curry later
  • tidy desk of random clutter
  • sweep floors and hoover up all the rubbish
  • book an electrician to sort out living room light and put up some exterior lighting
  • get SpiritDoggo out for a walk
  • water plants
  • wash bedding
  • find my next book to read, prob next in Percy Jackson series, my GNephew has good book recommendations 😄
That will be a whirling dervish of an hour I think 😄 Have a good day all, SoE

SingleThreadJoiner · 25/01/2024 14:24

Thanks all for the moral support re: tidiness!

@SpiritOfEdna you always have such great recipe suggestions, leg of lamb curry sounds amazing!

@FrostyFogg I WFH almost exclusively (not exactly by choice, my employer has set things up so we only have to show up in person once every 2/3 weeks at most) and yes, I end up working after bedtime most days (well except for the bits that require meetings with others 😂). That's partly due to my procrastination during the day, and partly what others have called 'the parenthood split shift', where you end up finishing the day earlier than others because of childcare, and then pick up again after bed. But of course I'm hugely privileged that I have the kind of job that allows that in the first place, and doesn't tie me to a particular place or shift.

Indeed, this morning I had an incredibly slow and lazy start (I feel seen, @TawnyT !) and have to stop early because D has her swimming lesson, so it will be a late evening if I am to meet the deadline I have for ten days' time!

Peridot1 · 25/01/2024 14:29

Look at my empty ironing basket! 😄

I will enjoy it until I start washing my summer clothes next week………..

SpiritOfEdna · 25/01/2024 14:45

@Peridot1 What! no random pennies or pegs in there!

OP posts:
TawnyT · 25/01/2024 15:25

@Peridot1 amazing work!

@SingleThreadJoiner I'm right there with you on the work patterns, I get the hours in but it can be somewhat sporadic at times. I wish I had the self control and focus to just knuckle down and get it done sometimes. Trying to work on that but I am (as my other half often remarks) very scatterbrained so find it hard to not let my mind wander, whether I'm in the office or not! As it stands today the little one is getting picked up from nursery by DP now, 3 hours early, as she's running a temperature, so I'll likely not get much more done til she's in bed!

RunningKatie · 25/01/2024 18:55

I'm another WFH'er who also procrastinates! I do 2 days in the office which is a good balance, ddog is very needy and so we have to consider him as well as the dc.
Today we've been for an inhaler review and I've hoovered upstairs. Dc2 has lost their watch somewhere so I'm tidying around in the hope it will appear.
I'm still a bit lurgified, although feeling a bit better this evening. Hurrah!
Apologies I can't tag everyone as I'm on a new page so can't scroll back. I can still see that empty ironing basket though. Most impressive.
Hope everyone is on the mend soon.

WinterLobelia · 26/01/2024 08:09

Morning all!

I am also impressed by the empty basket! I currently have 3 full ones and no desire to do anything about it!

I seem to have the lurgy. Dreadful night with shocking headache and sore throat and absolutely wiped out. I'm not even out of bed.

I am a bit of a procrastinator. In fact one of my favourite methods of procrastination is to Google 'how not to procrastinate'. I like writing tips for myself and highlighting it in pretty colours and sticking notes up for me to see (and ignore). Yesterday I was watching a youtube video on time efficiency. Very useful. I may watch some more today while I lounge in my sickbed.

Not much planned for today. DH is doing all the school runs as it works with where he will be at any given point of the day so I may write up a couple of weeks of meal planning.

Have a great day everyone and hope all who are under the weather are soon better.

Peridot1 · 26/01/2024 09:07

@SpiritOfEdna no to pegs and pennies! Or anything interesting!

@WinterLobelia - sorry you have developed the lurgy too. It is definitely hard to escape this year. Lots of rest. Staying in bed a good plan.

I am a terrible procrastinator. DH keeps buying me presents relating to “doing it tomorrow” or “leaving it to the last minute”. I think I would be a nightmare if I had to work from home. Or work at all really……….

This thread really helps me get things done though. Even if just one thing a day gets done I am making progress.

Yesterday I got quite a bit done. Finished the ironing obviously. Made some appointments and booked some taxis. Did some washing. My brain dump list that I did on Saturday is gradually getting done and has lots of ticks.

Today :

  • towels wash
  • dishwasher/kitchen
  • DS washing
  • move trundle bed
  • gym (although still aching from Wednesday!)
  • vacuum
  • move charity stuff downstairs

Have a great day all.

TawnyT · 26/01/2024 09:29

Morning all!

@WinterLobelia yes to procrastinating about procrastinating. I often make intricate plans on how I can become less distracted that are a distraction in themselves.

I have been using an app called Forest recently that has helped a little. You set the amount of time you would like to focus for and the app 'grows' a tree in that time. If you don't stay focused the tree withers and dies. It's just a nice little reminder that you've set out to do something specific... and if you have a good focused day you'll have a forest full of trees at the end of it.

Sorry to here there's more of the lurgy, I'm still feeling rubbish today and DD is an emotional wreak. Usually she's pretty rational for a toddler but this morning we've had multiple meltdowns over nothing... it's my day off with her today so we'll have a chilled one, maybe go for a little walk later.

Today I'd like to do a quick tidy in DDs room, bathroom, and spare room. And change the sheets (didn't manage that yesterday).

And I'm almost out of storage space on my phone so I need to sort through all my photos and upload to the cloud/delete.

Hope everyone that needs it gets lots of rest and feel better soon! Have a good Friday all

WinterLobelia · 26/01/2024 10:30

I like the sound of that app @TawnyT !

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

I managed to get up, wipe down the kitchen workspaces and swept the floor. And changed the kitty litter. And read the instructions for LobeliaCat's new thyroid medication. (She's 20 and in pretty good shape considering- we got her about 6 months ago as a rescue and have fallen in love with her fiery tortoisehell badass ways).

I think that's enough for today tbh. Although when LobeliaCat rouses herself from her slumber I need to somehow get said medication down her throat. 😱

FrostyFogg · 26/01/2024 12:56

Hello! Crikey it's the weekend already!
Thank you all for explaining about the WFH. And @Peridot1 , take a bow! Impressive empty basket.

My basket currently contains some pegs and two files for some reason, plus a pair of jeans and a tee shirt that were worn too briefly to be washed and too long to go back in a drawer.

All the jobs I hear about do really intrigue me. When I was at school we were looking at careers like law, medicine, secretarial, teacher, social worker etc. I didn't go to university so never really discovered what other options there were. I disappointed everyone by going for a career with horses, and then got bogged down with children and part time 'jobs'. I have had my eyes opened since I joined MN 5 years or so ago.

@WinterLobelia there are some great videos on youtube to give advice on giving tablets to cats. I found them very useful when mine needed antibiotics.

You are all making excellent achievements despite the lurgy. Impressed! I'm very pleased with what I achieved yesterday. Today I have ordered pet med, picked up a prescription for DH and assisted DD with some paperwork. Off to meet a friend shortly then doing some grocery shopping for mum. Is officially my brother's 'day' today but he's struggling with her decline a bit (she gets very irritable with us all sometimes and every now and again someone goes 'argh!' and someone else steps up) I am grateful that we are a good team. Hopefully brother can blow off steam over the weekend and be back in action next week.

Off to shower. Best wishes to you all!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/01/2024 15:01

Good morning everyone ☺️
How are all of you and your kids?
Seems all of us have posted about being sick ourselves or our kids/family. It's a bad winter for it.

I took baby to hospital late afternoon yesterday; went home 10pm; returned this morning at about 5am as baby's fever spiked. Baby (and I) getting admitted. Concern is possible bacterial infection on top of obvious virus. Swab was done last night for viruses and should have results soon. Other tests neg or borderline. Havoc is at home and thankfully fever has finally gone. We're all still coughing.

I did manage to toss out several empty boxes, fold and put away laundry and clean out the fridge yesterday afternoon, so, there's that...

Thanks for the kind thoughts everyone. 🩷

Hope all is well @Mumtobabyhavoc fingers crossed fir a speedy recovery for you both!

And hope everyone else is doing ok. I seem to be over the worst of my cough, though I still feel pretty crappy. Hard to tell with DD til we get going with the day, yesterday she was in a very big grump and crying over the littlest things (like when I gave her a cup without a handle 🙄). Today we're hopefully seeing friends for lunch, depends on how DD shapes up this morning though.

Before we go I need to clear the kitchen and walk doggo.

Your DD crying over a cup without a handle made me think of the MN classic threat about cutted up pears. I'll link in case you have not read it. I was ON that thread in real time..... Lord i have spent alot of time on MN!

Hope you are ok this morning @Mumtobabyhavoc, and baby of course.

How goes it, @petalpower ?

That thread made it onto the AIBU Mumsnet Podcast @WinterLobelia ! If anyone is a podcast fan, do look it up! Some episodes had me crying with laughter!

@TawnyT I hope you're on the up. Most of us had it before Christmas in my family. Managed to avoid sharing it with my elderly mum, but she woke up all snotty and coughing today.

Not much achieved here today after being pretty active for most of the week. Just got an air fryer and I love it already! It's just a little compact one, but did epic salmon fillets yesterday. Looking forward to doing chips in it.

Did the grocery shop this morning and forgot to look in the veggie drawer, so have doubled up on a few things. We will be having Brussels sprouts with every meal this week it seems. Reminds me of Forrest Gump's friend talking about shrimps: boiled sprouts, fried sprouts, sprout soup, sprout fricasee, sprouts roasted with bacon, bubble and squeak with sprouts.....could get windy!

I'm on my own at home this afternoon and tossing up whether to go for a walk or find a youtube step video. Also promised my I'd take her to a film or a show soon, so will look for something suitable.

I hope you're all having a pleasant weekend so far!
