Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

I went on a driving experience day years ago with an ex.
There was also an ex-tennis player there for an experience. He must have thought that he would be the only person there that day, as when he discovered a room full of other people there for the day at the safety briefing he threw a hissy fit and said he's not doing it with other people and stormed out.

Didn't see him for the rest of the day.

Oh dear @hdbs17 - I hope it wasn’t Tim Henman, I would lost my faith in humanity!

For some reason I thought Vernon Kaye would be an absolute arrogant knob. I have met him a few times through work now and he could not be more friendly, down to earth, self effacing and hard working.

RunBorisRun · 18/09/2023 14:50

Surely this is pointless unless you give the names!

(Thanks for naming Vernon)

PheonixAndTheCarpet · 18/09/2023 14:52

Is the tennis player Andy Murray?
Many years ago I had the misfortune of meeting Jim Davidson at an event and he was exactly what I expected!

Met loads through my old job.
Lovely ones: Simon Cowell, Nigella Lawson, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Stanley Tucci, Andy Murray, Vernon Kay, Tess Daly, Victoria Beckham, Alan Carr.

Not lovely! : Chris Moyles (horrible, talked down to everyone, wanted lots of freebies)
Gemma Arterton (self important)

mintich · 18/09/2023 15:03

Forgot the most lovely one that I thought would be horrible is Johnny Vegas. Such a kind man

clarepetal · 18/09/2023 15:04

I met Russel Brand and he was shy. No joke bearing in mind the last few days. This was 2010.

Ah as others have named names, I shall name too.

It was Andrew Castle.

I can see why you'd guess Andy Murray though!

Kylie and Tom Cruise - lovely and much more down to earth than I expected.

Damian Lewis and Helen McRory really stood out as being so much more polite and respectful than other people I was dealing with, when they had a justifiable reason not to be.

I worked with lots over the years, and generally found that the more A list they were, generally the more friendly they were, and the lower down the alphabet the worse they were - Nancy Dellolio I am looking at you!

BeverleyMacker · 18/09/2023 15:54

Corey Feldman was a knob but to be honest I was fully expecting it so it wasn't a great shock. Would have been nice to have been proven wrong though 😔

Dontcallmescarface · 18/09/2023 15:55

Aiden Turner and Russell Tovey. I don't quite know what I expected but it wasn't the side-achingly funny evening it turned out to be. Those 2 were quite the double act.

My late husband was brought up on and around Balmoral and worked there for a while. (This was many years ago.)

Most of the Royals were lovely, he reckoned. The one that he thought rather unpleasant was someone who'd married into the family.

I finally binged The Crown earlier this year and that person was portrayed as being particularly horrible, so it tied in with what DH said.

ThreeBearsPorridge · 03/10/2023 09:50

Now we are all guessing! Sarah Ferguson? Margaret's husband before her divorce?

WearyAuldWumman · 03/10/2023 09:57

The latter. DH sometimes had to accompany the Royals on shoots, which was how he came into contact with him.

Jim Davidson was the celebrity opening a local fete and I was tasked with meeting him on arrival, showing him round, etc. My expectation was that he'd be cocky, full of his own importance (it was at the height of his career) and possibly inappropriate. He was none of these - pleasant and cheerful to all. Quite the surprise.

He wasn't when I met him. He was a sexist prick. As expected.

Steph McGovern in Liverpool for Eurovision. We called out to her 'we love you Steph!' in a friendly way and she grimaced/snarled and didn't acknowledge it. In sharp contrast to Owain Wyn Evans who could not have been friendlier. He was as excited about Eurovision as we were, chatted and posed for photos. Such a lovely, lovely man.

I mean she was head to toe in sequins so hardly trying to go unnoticed. And even if she was in a massive rush; a smile, a wave, a 'have a great night ladies' or the like would have been a nicer response. We didn't try to stop her, ambush her or anything, she was just walking along the street. I used to be a fan and bought her 'Girlie Swot' jumper. Very disappointing.

[Name changed as this might be outing]

Justcallmebebes · 03/10/2023 10:48

I have to second the PP who found Jim Davidson lovely. I met him several years ago when he was still a regular on TV etc and he was surprisingly really pleasant and down to earth.

Exactly what I was thinking 🤔

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 03/10/2023 12:14

Lizzo.

She seemed fairly personable and nice but what struck me the most was how her size and body shape is absolutely not how it’s portrayed in the media. I actually think her stage costumes are designed to make her appear bigger than she actually is, could that be the case?

Others I was with all commented the same. It just shows the power of notoriety where immediately my first thought was you’re not at all how I expected you to look, which is pretty sad when you think about it.

littleripper · 03/10/2023 12:25

I have met loads. The most notable was Madonna was incredibly kind and lovely to me, I was utterly star stuck aged 10.

The worst? Steve Coogan, just a nasty, rude, horrid man - I loved him and was gutted. Oh and Peter Hook, but he's not really famous other than for being a knob head is he?

MargaritaHargitaysLittleSister · 03/10/2023 12:30

Angela Rippon....awful ...just awful. Rude and a massive sense of self importance. Olly Murs was absolutely lovely. Declan Rice is also full of his own self importance.

CwmYoy · 03/10/2023 12:32

Greg Davies is all you hope he would be.
