Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

A friend bought me tickets to a private show with Lenny.
By the time it finished I was absolutely sure that my friend hated me, it was the absolute worst night of " entertainment " I've ever had the misfortune to witness.

I would have preferred your experience.

Why? What was it like? He is a brilliant stage actor - I don't mean stand up - I've seen him in a few things - comedic and serious and he was brilliant in all of them.

Do you mind me asking what it was like?

I got the same impression when I saw him on Portrait of an Artist. He seemed very..............intense seems too mild a word

The portrait of him was absolute rubbish as well.

George Michael and Andrew Ridgely at Cinderella’s nightclub in Guildford, c. 1981. It was just before Wham Rap! was released. They were there on a promo. Andrew Ridgeley was very smiley and chatty, George Michael just looked pissed off - like he didn’t want to be there. He refused to speak to anyone, and this was waaayy before they got mega-famous.
I got a black & white autographed promo photo of them.

You're right, it was dreadful. It was like the Emperor's New Clothes, everyone raving abou it.

Forgot the most lovely one that I thought would be horrible is Johnny Vegas. Such a kind man

I have heard many lovely things about him.

We stayed in the same hotel as Annie Lennox a few years ago and she was coming to the lift at the same time as we had just got in. She said to her companion loudly - Tell them to get out!
We declined her polite request and told her there was plenty of room for them too. She grumbled and walked off. She had dark glasses on at 7pm at night in Ireland! Really rude.

How disappointing! Sad

I haven't managed to read the whole thread so I don't know if she's been mentioned. Someone I've met many times is Joanna Lumley.

In rl she is unassuming, quiet, sensibly dressed in sensible shoes. More librarian than siren. Fair and not unattractive and very petite.

RoseandVioletCreams · 25/01/2024 06:59

Barbara Windsor absolutely wonderful and grogeous
Gabby roslin, cold and fake

My son met him in a pub and they had a lovely evening.

The Princess if Wales, ie Kate. She was so warm and friendly. Really chatty and much less shy than I'd have expected.

The one who surprised me with his awfulness was Chris Tarrant. So up himself and swore a lot. I didn't like him at all.

Vonesk · 02/04/2024 20:56

Yes, I found myself , unexpectedly, in a work situation where there was a celeb in close proximity. It was a surprise encounter and very exciting for me ( Everything you would expect from a charismatic person) It was memorable indeed. Im not allowed to divulge due to confidentiality agreement.😃😃😃😃😃

MyMagicStars · 02/04/2024 21:02

Michael Rosen is absolutely fantastic- I’ve never been so starstruck!

Simon Pegg very polite.

Vonesk · 03/04/2024 04:38

I was walking home from work one night past the local Theatre. I looked across the road and spied Larry Grayson open the door (!!!!) of a limo. He spotted me ( walking) and stopped before getting in ,( and obviously waiting for a wave ) but I just ignored him. Sorry !!!!!!!

I have to second the PP who found Jim Davidson lovely. I met him several years ago when he was still a regular on TV etc and he was surprisingly really pleasant and down to earth.

Met him for a man NHS charity event (unless you have not noticed the NHS is filled with varied nationalities) and he was an arse and really racist and an unpleasant character.

bombastix · 07/10/2024 11:02

Rory Stewart. Sincere, very intense man. He is as he appears, which is rare in politicians. I suppose he no longer is one, but he doesn’t seem different in his new media orientated career.

middler · 09/10/2024 04:33

Noel Gallagher. Humble, polite, well mannered, not partaking of the substances provided for others' enjoyment...and loyal to his wife despite the best efforts of two page three style models thrusting themselves at him for several hours...nice guy.Not up himself at all.

MumChp · 09/10/2024 05:10

Janey Godley and her dog in a pram in a cafe on a trip to Scotland - really nice chatting with my youngest. I always thought she would be introvert. Don't know why, really.
Sorry to hear she is in end of life care.

Miranda Hart as she lives local to my family. She is much more quite than I thought but a sweet lady.

Freud2 · 20/10/2024 17:03

I came across Anne Robinson when I worked many years ago for the Daily Mirror. She was absolutely awful - patronising and superior. A prize bitch.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 20/10/2024 19:02

And that wasn't how you expected her to be?!

Unlike some celebrities, she seems to be like that with everybody - doesn't just save the nastiness for the 'little' people and be nice as pie to those considered 'equals'.

I gather that there was no love lost between her, Rachel and Susie when she left Countdown after her (short) tenure. IMHO, she was the worst ever host by a long shot and was followed by easily the best host in Colin Murray (no hard feelings, dear Richard W).

I was behind JL one time in the queue at Sainsburys. She seemed a warm lovely person and was stunningly beautiful.
