Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

We stayed in the same hotel as Annie Lennox a few years ago and she was coming to the lift at the same time as we had just got in. She said to her companion loudly - Tell them to get out!
We declined her polite request and told her there was plenty of room for them too. She grumbled and walked off. She had dark glasses on at 7pm at night in Ireland! Really rude.

Angela Rippon....awful ...just awful. Rude and a massive sense of self importance. Olly Murs was absolutely lovely. Declan Rice is also full of his own self importance.

Gutted about Angela Rippon.

I once had the misfortune to have to deal with Jimmy Young professionally. Him and his wife had faces like well-skelpt arses because they'd had to get the train (first class, mind!) rather than being driven to their work thing.

I once shared an office lift with Joan Bakewell. She was completely charming, kept up effortless light conversation, was impeccably dressed and beautifully groomed.

I don't know if either of these fit the thread as I had no idea who JY was before working with him, so had no expectations; and Joan B, well, you'd sort of expect her to be urbane and glamorous and charming, wouldn't you.

I should also add (that at the same hotel as Annie Lennox) we were having breakfast and Louis Walsh was at the table beside us. He chatted away for ages he was so lovely.

alittlecrosseyed · 03/10/2023 16:26

Neil and Christine Hamilton: DELIGHTFUL! Genuinely lovely people.

Linda Robson is very pleasant.

I briefly met Janine Duvitski who was very nice too.

Linda Robson is a grade A bitch. She physically injured me on the one unfortunate occasion I met her.

Eammon Holmes is rude and opinionated too.

Terry Wogan was a delight.

alittlecrosseyed · 03/10/2023 16:31

Jennie Bond was an arsehole when I met her

alittlecrosseyed · 03/10/2023 16:31

Neil Sedaka was weird

WearyAuldWumman · 03/10/2023 16:32

"She physically injured me on the one unfortunate occasion I met her."

What?!

WearyAuldWumman · 03/10/2023 16:37

Does this count?

I went to school with the author Ian Rankin. Almost literally bumped into him in a bookshop cafe more than 30 yrs later, when I was having a really bad day.

Had dropped my glasses. Was on all fours picking up the lens that had dropped out. Straightened up and there he was. "Oh, hello Ian!"

He looked startled, so I said "It's all right. I'm not a mad fan. We were in the same English class - WearyAuldWumman..."

"Oh, Weary! Hello."

Got my lens, sat down with my coffee. Next thing, he comes over "I'll be back in a minute - we're just getting ours."

He and his son came over and sat next to me. Ian just blethered away about old friends. At one point, he told his son "Don't have that book read all at once!"

He hadn't changed a bit. Still very down to earth.

@WearyAuldWumman lovely story - glad he remembered you and hadn't changed👌Was that in Bruntsfield by any chance?!

WearyAuldWumman · 03/10/2023 16:51

It was the coffee shop in what used to be Thin's. Might have been Blackwell's by then.

Thebigblueballoon · 03/10/2023 16:53

I met Ian Watkins from the Lostprophets through work. He was articulate, polite and I thought one of the nicest celebrities I’d ever dealt with. Gives me the absolute creeps to think about this now. How people can deceive you.

MeOldBamboo · 03/10/2023 16:53

Tony Hadley was a really good laugh when I met him at a secret Who gig years ago. But Lionel Blair told me to fuck off (not at the same gig!) 😁

WearyAuldWumman · 03/10/2023 16:53

The next time I saw him was a couple of years later - 2010. Our year from Beath High School had a joint 50th birthday party/reunion at Wee Jimmy's in Cowdenbeath. Again, he hadn't changed.

MeOldBamboo · 03/10/2023 16:54

Oh and George Michael was just lovely. As was his Mum.

JMSA · 03/10/2023 16:56

mintich · 18/09/2023 15:03

Forgot the most lovely one that I thought would be horrible is Johnny Vegas. Such a kind man

Anyone who has ever met him says how wonderful he is Smile

Startingagainandagain · 03/10/2023 17:01

The celebs I have met:

Really unpleasant:

  • Tracey Emin: rude and arrogant
  • Esther Rantzen: rude, arrogant and well known by TV crews for being difficult. Also, her charitable persona is just an act...

Friendly ones:

  • Kay Burley
  • Various cast members from Holly City
  • Julian Sands (RIP)
  • Russell Tovey.

Also met Princess Anne several times and Boris Johnson. Was very impressed by her, Johnson not so much...

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/10/2023 17:05

I can see why you'd guess Andy Murray though!

I've never met him, but all accounts I've heard say that he's very friendly and genuine. Just because he's introverted and probably doesn't feel comfortable in big crowds, that doesn't make him rude or nasty in any way.

Every time I see or hear about Ronan, I instantly think back to the old MN thread - where he was deliberately and needlessly vile to the poster (as a teenage girl), so her mum went to his car, got him to wind the window down, and then lamped him one!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/10/2023 17:06

That does not surprise me one bit about Esther Rantzen.

Wexone · 03/10/2023 17:07

not hugely famous, but irish people Will know him. Francis Brennan( presents a show on TV here and him and his brother own a large hotel in killarney, has a range with dunnes stores and released a few books ) comes across all nice on TV etc but so rude. stayed at hotel were we were at a wedding. he came into the lobby were we were talking with the bride we called over to him and he literally ran past with his head down knocking my aunt coming out of the lift in the mean time. was at a dinner party next day which coincidently my mother in law was at. prceeded to tell her he was acousted by a drunken bride and crew night before. she quickly put him straight ( I had told her that morning) plus there was about 7 of us and 5 of them didn't drink.

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 03/10/2023 17:08

Buster Bloodvessell taught me how to dance. An absolute sweetheart of a man. RB was quiet, a bit shy. At a different time obvs, what a meeting of minds that would have been

CwmYoy · 03/10/2023 12:32

Greg Davies is all you hope he would be.

BCSurvivor · 03/10/2023 17:10

David Hockney, way back in the 1980s, when I was a 16 year old art school student.
He was supposed to be giving a talk but turned up completely drunk and could hardly stand up.
And then refused to acknowledge anyone afterwards unless they bought his book.
I was expecting someone nicer.
