Anyone met a celebrity and they haven’t been how you expected?

I guess from all the RB threads…a lot of people saying that they are appalled but not exactly surprised.

so I wondered - anybody met anyone well known and they were NOT how you expected? For good or bad?

I had a very strange and brief encounter with one of my favourite actresses a couple of years ago and it was not what I expected at all! Made me realise of course we don’t know these people at all. Any other stories?

Buster Bloodvessell taught me how to dance. An absolute sweetheart of a man.

He was 6'2" tall - which I always thought to be the height of Bad Manners Grin

When reading these threads, I always wonder how I'd be described after random encounters with strangers 🤔

Linda Gray ! She was going out with a friend of a man I worked for in the 90's. Boss man didn't know who she was and sent her to sit with me to talk girly things whilst he and her boyfriend conducted "men's" work. She was absolutely divine. I was starstruck being a Dallas mega fan back in the day. We had a right giggle.

And Bill Nighy. An absolute gent. Looked and smelled divine. Just a quick hi and a photo and he was charming.

Joanna Lumley - lovely as you would imagine. At a work event with lots of old people and she not just chatted to them, she got their tea, carried plates and was just generally a good egg.
Nicholas Parsons - opposite! Refused to talk to anyone and when one of the elderly people was taking photos told them to fuck off.
Brian Blessed - lovely lovely lovely.

My brother met Michael Gambon. My brother knew I was a fan (I had flown to the U.K. to see him in various plays) so Michael recorded a lovely message for me.

I still have it and occasionally play it, the kids can recognise its Dumbledores voice. May he RIP

Oh and George Michael was just lovely. As was his Mum.

❤️

Anne Robinson from the weakest link. An absolutely lovely woman! Very sweet!

@hdbs17 - I just knew you meant Andrew Castle.

@CakeInAJar - what did you do to them?!

I work in the media and asked them for quotes/if they wanted to partake in a story. Perfectly normal on our industry. Both on the phone. Hairy Biker shouted that he was in panto season (like it’s relevant?!) and hung up. India a in response to a positive piece regarding something relevant on their work - just said “Fuck. Off” and hung up 😂

Ive spoken o the odd celeb this way and these are the only 2 rude ones I’ve ever come across

I was actually watching old episodes on Challenge last night - I know it’s an act but she’s awful, commenting on how fat and unattractive the contestants are!

Kidsfortea · 03/10/2023 17:34

Sophie Ellis-Bexter. Met her at my work. We catered for her and crew. My partner has always loved her, it was his birthday and she recorded a message for him. Lovely lady.
Barbara Windsor was also lovely. Ate tiny amount of food. Her husband was also lovely.

I can see why you'd guess Andy Murray though!

I've never met him, but all accounts I've heard say that he's very friendly and genuine. Just because he's introverted and probably doesn't feel comfortable in big crowds, that doesn't make him rude or nasty in any way.

Every time I see or hear about Ronan, I instantly think back to the old MN thread - where he was deliberately and needlessly vile to the poster (as a teenage girl), so her mum went to his car, got him to wind the window down, and then lamped him one!

Oh that's priceless! Might have to do a search for that!

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · 03/10/2023 17:40

Jacob Rees-Mogg is super polite and gracious. (I once spilled hot coffee on him!) Still don't like his politics...

When I was a small child and my father drove a parade of crappy old bangers, we once broke down late at night in the middle of nowhere (Yorkshire) on the way back from a holiday. A limo pulled up and Bernard Manning got out! Helped my Dad identify the problem, provided distilled water for the radiator, gave me and Mum a flask of tea! You'd imagine he would have been a rude bastard, as per his persona, but he was an absolute gent that night.

Along similar lines, Jeremy Clarkson was superficially very pleasant, smiley, and polite the one time I briefly met him (in a hairdressing salon! - he was filming The Grand Tour, couldn't get a signal on his mobile phone, and came in and asked if he could connect to my hairdresser's wifi.)

Brian May, whom I know in various contexts - is the kindest and loveliest person you could ever meet - but that won't be a surprise.

scentnsensibility · 03/10/2023 17:43

Jamie Bell, I didn't have any preconceptions about him but was shocked by how charismatic and attractive he was. I'm (almost) old enough to be his mum and could feel myself blushing.

CakeInAJar · 03/10/2023 17:43

Oh yes Brian May and his wife are truly lovely people!

KatStratford · 03/10/2023 17:45

Tina Turner was just wonderful; kind, generous, thoughtful and phenomenally hardworking.

Worst was andrew Maxwell. Which checked out when he was on I'm a celeb. So incredibly rude!!!

I've met a lot of politicians and regardless of politics they've all been lovely. Michael Gove was a bit socially awkward, but otherwise very polite etc.

Also met a few footballers, and again all been fairly nice people.

Who's Andrew Maxwell??

Who's Andrew Maxwell??

No idea but, if he was on 'I'm a celebrity', presumably he isn't famous.

My friend has worked with actors and entertainers every working day for decades and very rarely mentions any names. But he recently said that Sarah Millican is the nicest person in show business. I was really pleased to hear that.

YessicaHaircut · 03/10/2023 17:56

Peter Hook has been mentioned on this thread as not being so nice but I met him backstage at a gig and thought he was lovely. I was very starstruck and he was really kind, let me get a photo with him and answered all of my inane questions about Joy Division.

TheHouseElf · 03/10/2023 17:58

Met a few, through an old job. Gordon Ramsey was the most surprising because he was so very polite in real life and we'd expect him to turn the air blue. 😁

Pamela Stephenson was the nicest, very sweet and super polite.

That's interesting. I've heard the opposite.

Freepublictransport · 03/10/2023 18:02

Steve Pemberton and Lily Allen were lovely.
John Leslie was arrogant and pinched my bum.

spuddel · 03/10/2023 18:02

Sad to hear Jimmy Young wasn't nice. I grew up with him on the kitchen radio every day, my dm loved him. TTFN and his weekly shopping price index, riviting stuff Grin Glad Terry Wogan was lovely.

Rupert Everett was a darling, as was Robbie Coltrane. And a now deceased Irish actor Donal McCann, such a talent and presence but so friendly and kind. James Woods was amazing. Also Jeff Goldblum. Much more handsome in real life.

FudgeyMcFudgeFace · 03/10/2023 18:04

Sticking up for Steve Coogan here!! DD works in a sweet shop near where he lives. Says he's always nice and polite to the staff.

Another DD has met Olivia Williams, ❤️ Bill Nighy ❤️, and the late len Goodman. All Lovely. But I suppose that's expected of those 3 😁
