My prediction- The new qualifications will be based around software provided by Sunaks in laws tech company for ££££s.

Notonthestairs · 04/10/2023 19:56

No10 has confirmed that £600m of school funding to prepare for this change will be new money from the Treasury. It has not said how this will be paid for.

You can imagine the Tory attack line if Labour just slipped out £600m of uncosted spending promises.

I've gone from mildly rolling my eyes to being really fucking annoyed.

itsgettingweird · 04/10/2023 20:00

So the countries apparently broke. We can't pay drs more. We can't find HS2. We can't find nhs waiting lists. We can't fund public services.

So the answer to that is to fork out £600m changing something they've just implemented.

You can't make this shit up Angry

Notonthestairs · 04/10/2023 20:07

As you say T levels only began recently. It's completely ridiculous.

Via Jim Pickard

here’s a map of where the new transport spending priorities will be, “Network North” isn’t just the north

That map is actually a perfect illustration of what Southerners think "the North" is.
Anywhere north of leeds/Manchester can get to fuck, despite the fact that is in fact most of the North.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/10/2023 20:13

More to the point why isn’t that new money being spent on stopping the buildings down on the staff and children?

I think there may be more pressing spending needs in schools at the moment.

LittleBowSheep · 04/10/2023 20:14

Braverman's speech yesterday was sickening for many reasons but one of the things she said has really made my blood boil.

"The wind of change that carried my own parents across the globe in the 20th century was a mere gust compared to the hurricane that is coming".

Her parents immigrated to UK in the 1960s from Mauritius and Kenya and she was born in Harrow. So basically she is saying that it was 'okay' for her parents to come to UK and make their lives here and she herself has no doubt benefited from their decision to do so. But she thinks it's not okay for anyone else to come here to try and build a better life for themselves? The hypocrisy is astounding.

The same goes for other Tories whose ancestors have immigrated to UK but they don't want others doing the same; Priti Patel whose grandparents came from Uganda and Dominic Raab whose father came from Czechoslovakia. What is wrong with these people when they don't want others to have the same opportunities as they have had because of their ancestor's decisions. It's just hideous.

By the way, I say this as a child of parents who came to UK during the war fleeing Nazi occupation and were forever grateful for the safety it gave them and the potential prospects it provided for them, and then their children and grandchildren.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/10/2023 20:19

I think that if each sixth form and college was offered £1.8m each they would put it to good use currently. They can barely afford to staff the curriculum they currently teach let alone employ more more teachers for Sunaks vanity project.

Il bet they don't see much (if any) of that money though, and any they do see will be conditional on using equipment and tech from tory donors, family and friends.

Piggywaspushed · 04/10/2023 20:22

Just been to the Ken Loach film as an antidote.

Notonthestairs · 04/10/2023 20:27

Yes that was exactly Braverman's message Sheep. And it was lapped up.

Although amusingly Farage trashed the speech as having no policies.

It was. My great, great grandparents were economic immigrants who fled the Potato Famine. I’m guessing they’d be looking at Rwanda now - like Beaverman’s.

But there is no money for pay rises.

Zonder · 04/10/2023 21:41

What's all this about the police investigating Sunak for making a joke about Sturgeon and prison? DH dropped that on me as he was heading out of the door and I can't find anything about it. Has he made it up to get me even more riled?

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/10/2023 22:01

Yet another part of the new plan for money saved on HS2 that has already existed for years.

Think I might be prepared to believe that they actually did make this decision this morning if it weren’t for the video filmed in Downing Street.

perichickenwings · 04/10/2023 22:07

Apparently Sunak recently donated £3m of his own money to a girls college in California for a computer lab. I strongly suspect his girls will be enrolling there in 12 months time.

If he has spare money, why doesn't he insist on paying a higher rate of tax, perhaps he could even pay the same proportion of his income in tax as teachers and nurses?

Or does he not trust the government to spend the money wisely?

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/10/2023 22:16

You could fix quite a lot of potholes for £3million.

I don’t think he’s really committed to his war on potholes.

DuncinToffee · 04/10/2023 22:21

Both Johnson and Cameron are disagreeing with Sunak on cancelling the HS2

And Osborne.

Which is a collection of people I don’t agree with often

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/10/2023 22:42

Wtf was his wife doing giving a speech? Correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't think party leaders wives/husbands gave political speeches. It's a bit like me turning up to my husbands workplace and telling his colleagues how to do their jobs. Crass.

Why would you even want to do that? Being someone's plus one and wanting the limelight? They are desperate.

Roussette · 04/10/2023 23:07

It is crass. That is exactly the word I was going to write on this thread after seeing it on the news

Melania trump used to introduce her husband....'nuff said

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/10/2023 23:13

Stupid too if you’ve told journalists that her taxes are none of their business because she’s not involved in his political life.

Oh my, yes! I'd forgotten that

I smell desperation. Good looking eloquent woman speaks up for her husband
