Tell you what, if Truss can sell out one night in a single 400-seat regional theatre to non-rubberneckers, then I’ll pretend this is her . Until then, we might have to face the fact that being popular within the very odd world of Conservative party conference is the equivalent of having infectious diarrhoea pretty much anywhere else.

I love Marina Hyde.

That’s 17 days old. A lifetime these days.

I think the question about who are you voting against is the most interesting and tells a tale, that will be replicated across the country come a GE.
The last 17 days won't have made that any prettier for the the Tories.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/10/2023 21:52

It also says something interesting about tactical voting and starting from a lower base if replicated, I think.

Ministers are to rent prison cells overseas to help tackled the overcrowding crisis in Britain’s jails.

Alex Chalk is expected to announce the plan on Wednesday as figures showed that there were just 258 places left in the adult male prison estate.

What have they been doing for the last 13 years???

MrTiddlesTheCat · 03/10/2023 22:10

Back to the good old days of transportation. Have they suggested workhouses yet?

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/10/2023 22:12

Thank god conference finishes tomorrow. Dread to think how ridiculous the policies might get if it goes on any longer.

Not to mention the fact that having the Home Sec talk about others being soft on criminals one day and announcing you’ve run out of prison places the next is a clusterfuck even for them. Presumably there was no attempt at any sort of consistent policy thread through speeches.

Notonthestairs · 03/10/2023 22:23

What I don't understand is that for the last 8 years or so the prison population has been pretty stable - so this must have been predicted. Why the flip have they left it until crisis?

"Not to mention the fact that having the Home Sec talk about others being soft on criminals one day and announcing you’ve run out of prison places the next is a clusterfuck even for them. Presumably there was no attempt at any sort of consistent policy thread through speeches."
Quite. No coherent plan, just veering between crises.

jgw1 · 03/10/2023 22:40

Presumably there was no attempt at any sort of consistent policy thread through speeches.

That is what happens when you have someone who is in charge who has no leadership skills.

Added to which the announcement of scrapping policies which didn't exist, just signals to everyone that the silly season is here.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/10/2023 22:45

And I think we can agree it has been silly.

Just seen that Lee Anderson quote in full. Apparently Jesus might have been a good dictator.

jgw1 · 03/10/2023 22:48

I don't think we need the Monster Raving Loony party anymore.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/10/2023 23:00

Now, I always think a dictator is a good idea, if they're a good dictator. But there's no good dictators, is there, really? I think Jesus might have been one, but there's not.

You can almost hear a small part of his brain yelling ‘mouth, stop talking.’

L1ttledrummergirl · 03/10/2023 23:01

I lost you all. Thank goodness I found you again.

News night, Victoria Derbyshire actually challenging Michelle Donelan.

They are really showing themselves for who they are.

Now back to read what I missed.

OMG. Donelan gets herself into such a mess here she says she believes we should stand up for things that are divisive and promote hatred.

Ha! Whoops. It cheers me a little that Tories like Nuz Ghani still exist though. Straws...clutching...

I have so say I assumed that her next line would be and so I am resigning from the government, because I cannot stand on the side of hatred.

Flumpaphone · 04/10/2023 07:05

I was at the Tory conference (I was there for work, definitely not as a Tory).

Farage was strutting around like he owned the place - I think they've definitely done some sort of deal with him - safe Tory seat in return for standing down Reform candidates maybe?

Overheard on the GB News stand -

"last night was pretty good, Nigel was at the head of the conga line and Pritti came in later".

cakeorwine · 04/10/2023 07:10

You have to wonder what has happened to the Tories on the left of the party? Have they all vanished?
Gone silent?

IClaudine · 04/10/2023 07:17

Thanks for the inside info Flumpaphone. I reckon you might be right!

They either left and became independent during May’s tenure or had the whip withdrawn by Johnson over the Brexit deal. Very few of them got re-elected as independents in 2019.?

Notonthestairs · 04/10/2023 08:14

I think Farage will hold off until the election defeat and then think about swanning in as their saviour. Heaven knows they wont be able to give him a real job to do.
Braverman etc must be pissed off - he pretty much stole her thunder.

AdamRyan · 04/10/2023 08:23

I think its absolutely ridiculous that Farage was there and shows that the Conservatives know they are absolutely screwed.
Cynical me can't help wondering if this is an attempt to court some new donors as the existing donors are leaving the party, and they need funds for the GE.

I absolutely hate NF. Here's the kind of shit he's been saying in the US:
Mr Brexit wanted everyone to know it wasn’t OK that “people feel guilty about being white” these days, and that “we’re all supposed to take a knee to an organization called Black Lives Matter” which is, by the way, “openly Marxist”. The boos were loud and enthusiastic. With a slightly manic look in his eyes, he added that “if we’re going to keep our history, our heritage, our culture, if we’re going to defend our civilization then this is the battleground.” I think we all know exactly what that means.

Farage made his most awkward speech ever as tanks rolled into Ukraine

“Vladimir Putin is a nationalist Russian... I always thought we were dealing with someone very logical’

Will there be a vote on the future of HS2?

If so I can't see that going well.

Apparently he was there in his role as GB News presenter - so that's a useful link for them for the time being i guess

Andy Street, the Tory W Midlands mayor is furious about the HS2 cancellation. He’s met Rishi multiple times over the last day and it isn’t going well. He may quit after Rishi’s speech today. Allegedly he’s cancelled a foreign trip to listen to Rishi’s speech today. Some cabinet ministers could take a lesson from that.
